This Mayan temple was only 5 minutes from our hotel. My husband and I dropped by at noon mid-May on our first full day in San Ignacio and Belize. We thought that this was a good way to get acquainted with the Mayan culture. I read that it was a small ruin so we didn’t hire a guide. There is a small museum which was educational. It was well worth the visit if you have time. My only recommendation is to go early in the morning before it gets too hot.

Definitely worth a visit. Don’t follow google map directions. Lots to see and explore here, very interesting to stand in such an ancient building. It would be nice to have more interpretive signs at the ruins so you could better understand what you are looking at.

Nicely kept site, use a guide so you know what you are looking at. Pretty easy to walk around and not too big.

my "new" favorite Mayan excavation - interesting and interactive with climbs and tunnels to explore. And there was almost no one else there, we had the whole place to ourselves. Serene jungle, beautiful grounds.

The day we went, there were no official guides available. We were fortunate to meet an independent guide who helped us make sense of what we were seeing. It is interesting if smaller and older than some of the other ruins.
We learned that it may only be a short distance from San Ignacio, but it is all up hill. If you don't book a tour, take a taxi up and walk back down.

We left Belize City around noon, checked in hotel and headed to Cahal Pech. Warning the GPS took us two wrong places! We drove down 2 different pothole dirt roads before finding the entrance. Once we found the right entrance, paid our $5USD each it was a good start for our trip. It was uphill with stairs, not bad at all. Pretty hot and muggy (rained all morning) and we got some bug bites. We didn’t need more than an hour to visit these ruins. There were a lot of extra stairs to climb if you want the extra exercise or you can just walk around the outside. Worth it to fill in a couple hours. We headed to Xanantunich the next day so this was a good preview for our Mayan ruin fun. BTW: so glad we left Belize City, the San Ignacio vibe was so chill. Really enjoyed this little town of San Ignacio and very COVID safe, everyone wore masks and hand washing stations everywhere

Easily accessible, right in town. We stayed across the street at the Cahal Pech Village Resort and could walk here. Not crowded. Went twice during our trip. You can see the whole ruin easily in under 2 hours.

We kept reading about this being a small site. When visiting, we didn’t feel it small at all. There are lots of rooms and walls standing so it feels very different from other sites that seem to be only pyramids. There are not guides here, so best to visit another site with a guide first (our recommendation), study prior to arrival, or arrange an outside tour. Museum is not open at this time because of COVID. You can see at your own pace. Easy to lose a couple of hours here!

This is a great small to medium size Mayan archeological site. It's actually a bit bigger than I thought it would be going in to it. The site is at the top of the hill overlooking San Ignacio so it's very easy to get to. There is a small museum with some history of the site as well. The museum covers most of the highlights of the site, so you probably don't need a guide. If you are totally unfamiliar with the Maya, a guide would be helpful to understand what you're looking at. Without a guide, I spent a little over an hour at this site.

I visited these ruins on a Monday morning about 10AM and was the only one there. The price was $5 USD. and well worth it ! The birds were singing and it was very peaceful ! Wear comfortable shoes as some of the gravel is loose . You should also bring some water as it can get very hot here. There is also a nice gift shop. It was small but had some nice choices. I highly recommend seeing these ruins if you are near San Ignacio.

Are the ruins stroller accessible? How far of a walk is it from the parking lot? We will have a 3 year old and 16 month old and forgot our carrier.

Hi, would love to visit these ruins. I have had double knee replacement so climbing may be an issue. Must I climb alot to see these ruins?

No, the ruins are accessible by a path that runs at a good gradient. To full explore the ruins you might struggle up and down some of the steps but from what I remember you can walk around them on a flat surface

I think it opens around 9am and closes sharply at 5pm. Good little tip is to get there around 4:30 and then you can stay as long as you like after it closes. I am almost sure you might be able to visit after it closes. However, it not worth the trip if you have to travel far or have limited time. Go and see Xunantunich, but be warned they will not let you in after 3:30pm even if you're a few minutes late.
If time isn't an issue see Cahal then Xunantunich.

We took the cruiseship tour. It was worth it! We went in an air-conditioned bus with a local tour guide who is a professional in archaeology and very knowledgeable in everything related to the Mayan ruins and the history of the area.
It was a great trip and learned a lot!

General admission is $10.00 Bze ,but if you write to (NICH) National Institute of Cultural History in Belmopan 8222106 and inform them you wish to take a class to the site and they will prepare a waiver/ pass for you all.
This applies to any other archaeological sites. I did this kind of arrangement with them in the past when I was teaching at BCA in Belmopan
