An amazing hands on history lesson! I enjoyed tasting the actual fruit and the bean through the lifecycle. Being able to crush the bean on the lava stone was interesting. I highly recommend a visit, the experience is about an hour so you should be able to fit it in around other things you may have planned.

The family that runs the business is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the traditions they are preserving. They were personable and inclusive, and accommodated our group of five. Really interesting experience and great souvenirs to bring home! Absolutely recommend!

This was an unplanned stop for us - and so glad we did! The presentation and demonstration about cocoa was fascinating and I have NEVER had such delicious chocolate before. I appreciated how they took us one step at a time adding an ingredient and then tasting. I would not have fully appreciated the flavor nuance and richness had I just been served the end product. This was to my great benefit!! Highly Recommend.

A fun, informative tour where you learn not only the traditional Mayan method of making chocolate, but also the history of the cocoa bean and it's relationship to the Maya.

My family of six greatly enjoyed the combo tour of the organic farm & Mayan chocolate making. Our guide described how the cacao was farmed historically and what’s been learned in the last decades to improve the yields. We tasted fresh cacao pods at various stages of ripeness to compare, and were each given our own fresh coconut from a tree to drink at the end of the farm portion of the tour.
The chocolate making process was interactive and also full of great details on Mayan chocolate in the Mayan culture.
We highly recommend this combo tour!

This 45-minute tour offers a history of traditional Mayan chocolate making and includes an opportunity to pound your own cacao paste and drink the results, while the friendly guide gradually improves the taste and flavor by judiciously adding spices and honey. Highly recommended.

We did the chocolate making and tasting tour. Learned about the history of chocolate/cacao and got to taste along the way. Grind the beans yourself and drink it with spices like the Ancient Mayan did.
The whole tour takes about 1-hour. Our guide was friendly and very knowledgeable.
At the end you can purchase bars, cacao nibs and other chocolate gifts.

This was a great cultural experience in San Ignacio. We were on the fence as we had already done a lot in town, however, so glad we decided to add one more stop in our day. AJAW chocolates provides a great deal of history and hands on experience that will engage anyone. I have a new appreciation for chocolate, it’s history in Mayan culture, and the people who grow and harvest the beans! Pro note: don’t walk up the hill to AJAW in the middle of the today when it is hot!
