You have to stop by and at least take a photo with the tree. He loves it, lol! Only Athens would have such a fantastic little anomaly for the people to enjoy!

This is a respectful way of living- just love that William H Jackson thought so much of this tree that he made sure the tree would enjoy a life without the interference of people. This is something to celebrate and enjoy.
The tree is located on a small street with homes. It doesn't take time or money to briefly enjoy the happiness that exudes from this space. The bird chirps and the wind filters through the leaves.

Had heard about this local landmark and wanted to see it for myself. It sits at the top of a hill at the intersection of South Finley and Dearing streets in a quiet residential area. The tree's lot has a chain barrier surrounding it, a retaining wall and is separated from the larger portion of the adjacent property by a private driveway. The portion of Finley street leading to the tree is the last cobblestone street that exists in Athens. Just getting to experience driving on it made the trip worth it for us. The original tree is thought to have been around through the late 18th century. In 1942 it fell at which point it was replaced by a new tree grown from one of its acorns, and planted in the same location. As a result, the current tree is sometimes referred to as the “Son Of The Tree That Owns Itself”. Both trees have appeared in numerous national publications including “Ripley’s Believe it Or Not”. How did it come to own itself?? The short version is that according to legend this Oak tree has legal ownership of itself and all land within eight feet of its base. Legend has it that the tree was located on the property of Colonel William Henry Jackson who was the son of James Jackson (a soldier in the American Revolution) as well as a congressman, U.S. senator, and governor of Georgia. Jackson supposedly cherished childhood memories of the tree, and, desiring to protect it, deeded to it the ownership of itself and its surrounding land. Legend has it that this took place between 1820 and 1832 however there are no legal records to back any of this up. The tree is however one of the most recognized and well-loved symbols in Athens making it a “ must see” if you visit the area.

The Tree That Owns Itself is an Athens institution, and represents one of the more unusual historic landmarks in this very historic city. The tree currently at the location is technically the "son" of the original tree but it is nevertheless beautiful to see in its own right, in addition to the fun story. Several markers in the area attest to the tree's provenance, but other than the fact that the Tree owns itself, there isn't much to see here. The tree is located on an island in the middle of a residential district just outside the Athens core.

On my way out of town after a conference I decided to check out this infamous tree. It’s up a steep, cobblestone street and there’s not much to it. Give yourself five minutes to see the tree, read the plaques, admire its beauty and wonder what made someone deed a tree to itself. It can be tricky getting back on the main street depending on the time of day when you’re ready to leave, so be careful!

My husband & I are driving down throughh GA.
We are considering stopping and seeing thistree. A silly lil somehthing to break up our trip.
My question is: How is traffic in Athens? I know Atlanta is hairy so I am wondering .

Traffic is nothing like Atlanta. The only busy times are 8am-9am and 4:30-6pm M-F. During summer the campus is quiet, so downtown traffic is light.
