Denkalya desert it's a bit of Mars on Earth.
It is a desertic region which offers some of the most unbelievable sites on Earth.
It has many salt pounds of disparate colours: green, blu, red, violet, and so on.
It's very hot, about 60° C during daytime, and very cold at night: excursions to this place must be planned with care, always using local guides. For a "normal" trip of 6 days every traveller needs 6 lt. of water a day. Local guides are used to carry about 80 lt. of water each!
I cannot describe my experience in Denkalya, it would be impossible to do it. I only can post some photos I took there.

hi there, i'm going to asmara next month. years ago, i was in the danakil depression of ethiopia, i would enjoy the eritrean denkalya dessert. but hard to find tour operators. can you tell me your company with the program and the price for the few days you spend there? how far away from asmara and how to get a permit for this area? thanks a lot.

dear bastien, when you want to go to denkalya dessert, there is no way, since a lot of years. i found no agency before and got no permit in asmara: only for massawa, keren, ... closed by. i met a german speaking eritrean guy in massawa. he told me, that he would drive next hours to assab - nearly a 2-day drive, and over 700 km away. funny, that was my wish before. i thought about. an adventures trip in empty areas, with untouched beaches and dessert. the guy told me, that he would go back by ship. so sad, against my limited time in eritrea, the big chance to be arrested by the police, get many troubles driving in forbidden areas - my look is far away from eritrean people - farther to miss my connecting flight to khartoum, i reject my dreams to go there. after i stayed one week in asmara. it‘s a beautiful town with a lot to see and explore. all landmark borders with eritrea are closed, even in/out from ethiopia. i travelled 2014 to the danakil depression in ethiopia: erta ale, dallol, ... not far away from the eritrean border. one experience of my lifetime. you must do it, it absolutely worth a trip. not forbidden, like in eritrea. best regards from basel. johannes
