It is a sad place, and unfortunately too few people visit it. It is a place we must remember so that nothing like this ever happens again.

This is a tour which stays with you. Firstly it is a boat ride across the river and ocean and it itself is an adventure, Once on the island there is usually no one around so you have place virtually all to yourselves and can spend quality time on the island. Ruins, canons, slave stories, huge trees make this place special. This is one of my favourite places in SL.

Sea coach organised this well, with a very knowledgeable guide, who gave a very good account of the history of Bunce Island, and several other things to see on the way. We had a substantial lunch and softies. Shame about rubbish on the island: I don't think it's there because of the visitors though.

L'isola di Bunce è una delle tante isolette della baia di Freetown. Essendo disabitata non è raggiungibile con un servizio regolare di navigazione; per arrivarci occorre noleggiare una imbarcazione, che risulta piuttosto cara. Noi abbiamo utilizzato l'ottima Sea Bird. L'isola è una delle tante di un piccolo arcipelago e da sola meriterebbe più di due pallini, perché è in uno scenario assai suggestivo. Tuttavia valutare Bunce vuol dire valutare la fortezza degli schiavi che ancora c'è qui, o meglio, quel che oggi ne rimane. Pur essendo stata utilizzata fino in tempi recenti (meno di due secoli fa), l'incuria e l'abbandono hanno fatto sì che oggi sembri un rudere di età romana. Lo scheletro che ancora è in piedi sta crollando; per evitare il crollo nella parte bassa del muro portante sono state fatte delle orribili colate di cemento. Un restauro terrificante che a vederlo ti fa piangere il cuore. Piuttosto che un lavoro del genere sarebbe meglio lasciare crollare def tutto quel che ancora rimane.

I visited Bunce Island as a day trip from the Tasso Island Ecological Project--a great way to see and explore both islands. The history of Bunce Island is made very real through a visit here. It is not easy to hear, but it is important to hear. Efforts to restore the structures here are well worth supporting so more people can learn of this dark part of our shared history.

This is a must see when visiting Sierrea Leone. Nice boat trip form Aberdeen bridge. Interesting sight and story though awful. Great location.

I went with VSL travel to Bunce Island and the guide Kamara was fabulous. You could tell he wasn't just doing this as a job but he loved to tell people about the history of Sierra Leone. The boat ride from the Sea Coach terminal on Aberdeen took about 45 minutes, and you have beautiful views of Freetown from the water.
The dock has been fixed so we didn't have to wade through water! On the island you take a local guide and then start the tour. It isn't a huge island but it does have a lot of history about the slave trade. Kamara also told us about some people who traced their heritage back to Sierra Leone and it was highly likely that their ancestors passed through this beautiful but tragic place.
The buildings are in ruins but they are pretty none-the-less. The vegetation when I went was lush (I went right after the rains stopped). I think the whole tour took maybe 2 or 2.5 hours. It isn't long but it is well worth it.
If you get to try the Baobab fruit, I would encourage you to at least try it once.
Oh there is a fee once you get on the island. I forget how much it is I think about 10USD per foreigner.

The visit here was worth the time and effort, and ranks among the highlights of my time in West Africa. You need at least 1.5 hours on the island, and at least 1 hour each way by boat. So, a 1/2 day. The place is haunting and eye-opening. Be sure to visit with a local guide who can explain the history, etc. There is a fee for visiting the island. You come ashore at the small pier, and then explore the ruins of the slave history. The vegetation here is also amazing. Stop at Tasso Island for a cold drink on your way back to the city.

This is a piece of history that should be visited by all. It's amazing the structures that are still standing, but they desperately nee help to preserve such important history. Although it's a very dark past, all should take the time to learn about the atrocities of the slave trades. Beautiful island, rich in history, will humble all.

Bunce Island is truly a haunting site at which you can feel the dark chapter of Sierra Leone's history. It consists of the main fort and an old graveyard a couple of hundred meters further down the island. Both made a deep impression on me. However, it's not that easy to get there. I recommend staying at the Tasso Ecotourism Project, which is located on a bigger island next to Bunce Island and has some nice cottage at a quiet beach. It's not only an excellent location but probably also the easiest way to get to Bunce. Also, its staff can give you an excellent tour of the site!
