We came to Elephant Nature Park Office in Chiang Mai, and they told us about a 2-month new project called “Chock Chai Project by Elephant Nature Park”. We knew little about this and we weren’t sure about at first, because we read so many bad reviews about this place and how they used to treat the elephants.
The one thing we were sure was that we can trust Elephant Nature Park and if they are supporting Chock Chai to evolve to an ethical place and leave in the past the years of elephant riding and circle shows, they also get our vote to change. It’s great that they finally understand that Elephants care needs to be the priority, and that we need to look in the future and learn from the past.
So, we booked this new project, and we had a really good experience. We really enjoy our day in the park. Chock Chai park used to do elephant riding and expose them to circle and non ethical activities. Which is totally not acceptable for me. The good news is that they chose to change, and we need to give them the opportunity to do so.
In Chock Chai, we got to meet elephants of all ages in what it looks now as a good environment, We learned their past stories (that they used to do riding and shows for many people per day); We got to feed, trek and bathe with them. NO RIDING. NO FORCING elephants. We also learned many characteristics about elephants, our guide Boby was really good and speaks English very well, he told us everything about the new ethical tourism at this project.
I encourage tourists to book this kind of experiences and to contributes to an ethical model of tourism. By booking this, we help the locals to take care and feed their elephants, which is very hard without tourism support.
I really hope Chock Chai keeps this way, that they decide to keep families together (mothers and childrens), they nature park they have is very great to show tourism how elephants are good taken care of, as all elephants need to roam freely.

The elephants are treated very badly in this camp! I saw chained elephants who could not move more than three meters, one of them a pregnant elephant and another one an elephant mum, who was constantly shaking her head in clear signs of distress, with her little elephant baby who was also barely able to move because of the chains. It was a very sad experience.
Later on, when we did bamboo rafting, I could see from the river that an elephant show had just started where the elephants are forced to perform circus tricks.
My advice to anyone who plans to visit an elephant camp/sanctuary...: Please inform yourself precisely about the place and how the elephants are treated!! I really regretted of having visited the Chokchai elephant camp!
We were also driven to a close by Karen "Longneck" "village" which in fact was a small street for tourists with adults and children wearing neck rings and offering scarfs to sell to the tourists. During my holidays, I have done some hilltribe visits during trekking tours, where the local guide gave some facts about the life in the village before continuing the trek, but the "Longneck village" close to the Chokchai elephant camp was different. In fact, there was no village life, the women and children just sat there, waving and smiling at the tourists who took pictures of them.
The whole setting gave me a very bad feeling, It was one of the worst days of my trip, very disturbing and upsetting.

Please watch out if they promise you an ethical Elephant Experience without chains and mistreatment. You can easely be brought to this place which is a real horror for the animals and the People. Forced animals and mass production of instant Tourist "experiences" (so called rafting, zip-line and local village) to maximaze money and leaving all ethical norms aside. If you can not see what is really happening there you must be ignorent or blind.

The elephants are treated so poorly. They are standing in the sun chained up with no food or water for hours at a time and only allowed to move for a short period between these times. People are riding the elephants and the elephants look so sad. Spare yourself the drive and go somewhere else that looks after the elephants.

We wanted to visit the elephants sanctuary, REAL SANCTUARY- "no chains, no hooks, no ride". However, we were brought to CHOKCHAI ELEPHANTS CAMP. We saw, people riding the elephants, elephants in chains, with scars on their heads and ears, guards with sharply-ended hooks in their hands. I'm sure that in this camp people don't care about the elephants, they care about their money. Please, don't visit this place. Horrible!!!

We were told the camp was like a sanctuary, were you can bath the Elephants, play with them and feed them. We found that that was not the case at all, the elephants are really bad treated, being beaten up and they use a stick with a knife to control them. They use chains to tied them and guide them so the people can “enjoy” the show.
We did not participate in any kind of activity as we saw the scene. Please dont go so you dont support this kind of treatment.
Very disappointed and sad with the situation.
Please inform yourself were youre going before
Thanks

I tried to book the elephant tour where you can feed and bathe them without riding, hooks nor chains. Instead it was so deceiving that when we got there, it was the complete opposite of what I wanted. The saddest part was the elephants had scars and fresh blood on their heads from the hooks they use to punish them. Meaning how many times do they need to have this beating a day?! I will never support nor recommend this. They still are in business because there’s a huge chunk of tourists from China and other parts of the glove that book this tour. But the Chinese tourists doesn’t seem to care what’s happening. I just feel so sad after seeing this. I hope they will do something about it. Please raise awareness and let’s put an end to this animal abuse!

I simply could not ride an elephant in any tour package. To learn about how they are trained (tortured) until their spirits are completely broken from the beating - use Google or ask those who have worked with or witnessed the "trainers" - it's mindnumbingly horrific. Don't ride elephants. What they have to go through to carry tourists - which begins when they are babies - is cruelty at it's worst.
