After spending three weeks in Thailand and reflecting upon it all...this was my absolute favorite part of the trip. My friends and I stayed next door at Mae Wang (it had ac in the rooms 😀) but we ate dinner, hung out with Dee Dee and her friends, went on an amazing day trek with Zing (who is an amazing person to be around), fed the elephants, rode bareback, swam, and took a bamboo floating trip! Every single part of this trip was so memorable. I highly suggest staying for two nights at the Mae Wang Airbnb and experiencing all the wonderful people, food, and coffee they have to offer!

Each individual element of this trip was great. The in between moments were not as awesome. Pickup was late and you have to go to a set monument. From there it's about an hour drive that gets more scenic as you go. We started with the hike. Our guides were pleasant and helpful but didn't give a whole lot of info. The hike did give beautiful views of rural Thailand but isn't for those who aren't down for exercise. There were hard parts and narrow bridges along the way. The waterfall was great, village was mostly empty but showed another side of living, and lunch was filling and tasty. There was a lot of hurry up and wait in between every location. We left lunch and drove the the rafting where we waited 30 minutes for our "captains" to arrive. Once they did it was a blast. Our captain let us try steering, drove with a skill I can't imagine, and took us through with ease. Then we were dropped off to pay. Despite my confirmations of the booking my name was not on the list. Yet I'd already done most the tour before they noticed. No big, they added my name. Good thing someone else was at the monument to get picked up or we would've been forgotten. We then switched guides for the elephants but they seemed to forget we hadn't seen them yet. Our group waited again until they squeezed us in at the end. The elephants were great! They seemed well taken care of and I did not notice any type of harsh care. Riding was amazing! The bath time was a blast. There were definite moments of frustration with the tour but we still had a great overall time and have wonderful memories.

I agree with following review. We had the 2 day, overnight in a village camp experience and I posted my full comprehensive review under the Chai Lai heading. To find Chai Lai, look in Mae Wang Lodges, it's not listed under Chiang Mai.
Basically, it was a good experience and checked the boxes for chiang mai with trekking, waterfalls, elephants. But it was incredibly disorganized and the elephant education did not really occur although you could spend a lot of time with the elephants. So overall a very average rating.

After seeing all the amazing reviews, I was very excited for this day. I would urge those considering to view the attraction "Chai Lai Orchid" as it is the same location and much more accurate and comprehensive reviews. The experiences were a lot of fun, but also came with a few very negative moments, so to average the amazing and terrible extremes, they get an average. We did the amazing mountain adventure. It was pretty challenging during the hike at some points. However, the jungle was beautiful once we got in. Before we got into the jungle, we were on a rural road where for several minutes we were followed by dogs that kept breaking into violent fights. The guide explained there are many strays in the area, but it was a really scary experience! That being said, the hike after that was breathtaking. The bridges we crossed were sketchy but fun. I would like to point out that the advertisement to get to see the Karen village is misleading, as we walked through a village, it isn't an active village, and the Karen people have been deported according to the worker at the camp for over a year. The rafting was a lot of fun, but we waited in the sun for an hour for our guide to arrive. When we got back to the camp, one of the ladies bags in our group had been lost by the staff and took a half hour for them to find it. Later, we heard another guest complaining of the same problem. The elephant experiences were magical, but there are many similar sanctuaries nearby who are not as disorganized. We spent a lot of time waiting on the staff and it was clear some guests got to spend about a half hour playing in the water with the elephants, while we barely got five minutes.
To sum up, the experiences that we had here that were great could have happened at any of the nearby sanctuaries. It was a great and memorable day, but the staff was disorganized and frustrating at times. It was a special day because of the jungle and the elephants, not because of the location we chose. If I went back to Thailand, I would not choose them again.

what a special experience.. after staying at the Chai Lai Orchard, we got to ride the elephants in the safest way possible with their amazing mahouts… so amazing! if you a re in Chiang Mai this is the place to go!

I am not over reacting when I tell you my husband and I had an incredible time. The best part of our trip in Thailand was at Deedee's Elephant adventures! We were able to feed many different elephants from the old elephant with the big ivory tusks to the tiny baby elephant about 6 months old. We fed them bananas and sugar can from shoulder bags. The baby elephant even took a bag and wouldn't let it go! After the feeding we bareback road the elephants down a nature trail across a river bed. It was terrifying at first but extremely fun once you get used to being so high. The elephants are very docile but each have a personality of their own. Each of us had our own elephant to ride and command and direct up the nature path. The elephants were happy to be ridden (their ears flap around wildly when they were happy) and ate a lot of baby bamboo sprouts as we walked the path. It was a great experience. The guides are walking with you as you ride your elephant to insure they go the right way, but they aren't doing much as the elephants know the way! The guides will take many photos of you, and themselves, if you want them too! My husband even took the go pro on his elephant! When we were done riding the elephants we could clean them in the river which was very fun! Bring a change of clean clothes, after you are done riding and bathing your elephant you are offered a well deserved and necessary shower. Soap and towel are provided by Deedee's.
We stayed in downtown Chiang Mai and Deedee's elephant adventures picked us up at our hotel. You can also stay directly on location at Chiang Mai Orchid and experience the humanitarian work of Alexa and her staff of volunteers. It is a beautiful location but quite a drive from Downtown Chiang Mai. I hope you chose Deedee's its a great experience, you will not be disappointed!

We wanted a different sort of elephant experience and they got it at Dee Dee's. We spent time washing the elephant and enjoyed playing around in the beautiful river. The interaction was fantastic.

We stayed at Chiang Mai Orchid and experienced the humanitarian work of Alexa and her staff of volunteers. Her efforts to change lives for the better was apparent during every moment of our stay. If you want to travel with a purpose and help these beautiful animals,their care takers and the women working at the Orchid this is your kind of trip. The time spent feeding the animals and watching them interact will stay with us forever. We stayed in one of the bungalows and enjoyed every minute of our time there. The food was wonderful the bungalow was comfortable - we really appreciated the fan at night! Remember the staff is learning so be patient with them and know it is a training program and you are part of the training. I especially liked the escort to my bungalow every night by one of the resident dogs who made you feel like they were your personal guard dog as they slept outside our bungalow every night!

Deedee's Elephant Adventures could not have been better. As an advocate for fair elephant treatment, this experience was educational and promoted a great cause, as well as creating a fun experience for all guests. We rode the elephants bareback and swam with them in the river, and helped with bathing the elephants. It was the highlight of my entire trip, and I look forward to returning. I am also planning on contributing to Dollars for Deedee Campaign. Thank you so much for an amazing experience.

The Chai Lai Orchid is everything you would hope for and more! If you want to get away from the tourist party scene of Thailand, and want to see it for it's beauty, you've picked the right place! Not only is your stay adventurous by staying in the mountains, it's relaxing & peaceful. Did I mention the food in the cutest little cafe, overlooking a river, is super tasty?!
Chai Lai Orchid also leaves you with the sense that you contributed to a great cause. Being able experience elephants in a humane way, is hard to come across in Thailand. But, the Chai Lai Orchid treats their animals with respect.
The money spent on your experience here, provides for the staff and the elephants in need. Thank you Alexa for all of your hard work! It doesn't go unnoticed!!
