Intrepid Tours - Scenic Vietnam, Day 2
Waking up this morning I came to the conclusion that the bed is too hard for what I'm used to but I'm not complaining, reminding myself of my first world problem. Excited for the first tour to Mausoleum, I was taken back by Vietnam's military architecture and the presence of white mess uniforms fitted by the guards. Walking into the Mausoleum you got a sense of strict respect that kept you in your best behaviour.

As you marshal your way through in single file you get a glimpse of the past Ho Chi Minh presented in a glass case guarded be the men is white mess holding fire arms. Slowly gliding by you can't help but wonder is it real or a wax double. Whatever the assumption you get the feeling that this man is highly respected and you learn of the great leadership he brought to his country and his people.

We moved onto the museum of Vietnam's history. In my personal option I felt that there wasn't anything appealing other than the small stand selling thongs made out if tyres located at the exit of the museum.

Returning back to the hotel we then embarked on a city tour. Driven by electric tour buses we weaved through the busy traffic of Hanoi. Darting through little alley ways crowded with markets always offering something to sell. The great thing about this city tour is that you get to see many things you miss whilst walking and you cover most of the city, noticing the changes in the air fused by the aromas of the street food openly cooked on the streets.

Lunch was set in an Vietnamese restaurant located three floors up above a street kitchen. This may not look appealing to the general westerner as the place looks very worn, heavily steamed with stained walls and gritty floors, however guided by Phi he showed us that finding a place to eat could be easily tucked away from the general public and not to judge the presentation of the restaurant but rather judge it on the food it produces. Witnessing the chaotic busy staff attending to the customers, crowded and squatting on tiny blue stools with tables filled with a range of colourful foods, all seemingly enjoying the cuisine, is a testament that this place is highly sort after from its local Vietnamese people. We were served Bun Cha. This being my second Bun Cha meal, I found it different but still satisfying.

We then continued through the streets of Hanoi making one way to the famous Cafe whom serves the interesting 'Egg Coffee'. Presented in a small mug, I glare at this yellow tinge amongst the white froth and wondered of its taste. My mind was leaning towards awful as I was preparing my taste buds to tolerated any unfamiliar tastes that may not agree with my stomach. I placed my teaspoon and sunk it into the froth noticing that the froth was thick like a melted fudge. Stirring the whitened melted fudge I assumed was the egg, the dark colour of the coffee then seeped through changing the colour and the consistency of the coffee. Now having the coffee set to what I now considered looking normal I was ready to take a sip. I smelt the strong aroma trying to identify the blend and I gradually took my deist sip. Wow!!! With the expression on my face indicating that this coffee was absolutely superb. Never had anything like it and nothing compares. I am in complete amazement with this interesting blend of coffee and egg. My recommendation is to try and unlock a new sense of taste buds for coffee. A true appreciation of the creative blend.

The shop named Truong Dai Hoc Kinh Bac (Hong Ngoc) was not in our tour itinerary. The travel Agent took us there as a surprise visit without informing us as to what this place it about. When we reached and entered this shop we were told that this shop is affiliated to Government organization and helps handicapped and poor people. They sell embroidered pictures, handicraft items, and other stuffs which are very similar to the stuffs being sold at Old Quarters and other parts of Hanoi at very cheap prices.

I bought embroidered pictures at the price 10 times the (may be even more) price you pay at shops in Old Quarters or near Hong Bong Street. I realized next day when I visited Old Quarters and shops in other areas. It was a rip-off. I felt cheated and duped by false information by this shop. Next day when I wanted to return the goods I bought from there they simply refused. I doubt this shop has anything to do with Government organization and is also not welfare oriented. On trying yo make police complaint in the near by police station which is just about 20 yards away they said that they cannot accept this complaint because the complaint can only be made with the consumer grievence department. I did not have so much time to make complaint to consumer grievance department so just accepted what I bought and returned to my country.

Apart from above my tour was good without any trouble.

Hanoi is an amazing city so long as you escape the fury of the traffic. Crossing the streets can be hazardous to your health with the thousands of scooters coming from every direction, street lights are just for decoration. At night the city comes alive with everyone enjoying the street markets and cafes. Do not miss the nightlife, it will astound you.
By day, book and enjoy a private guided tour of the city. Dress comfortably, the walking and the climate can be a bit demanding but well worth it.
