I recently had the incredible privilege of joining a photography tour in Vietnam led by Nathan Horton who not only has an unparalleled passion for capturing the beauty of the country but also deeply cherishes its people and culture. This was my third tour with Nathan. From the very start, it was clear that this tour would be much more than just a typical sightseeing experience—it would be an exploration of moments, emotions, and the spirit of Vietnam itself.

Nathan not just a photographer, but a storyteller whose lens was driven by a love for people. He had an innate ability to connect with locals, drawing out natural expressions, genuine smiles, and candid moments that I’ve rarely encountered in a traditional photography tour. His approach was both respectful and warm, always mindful of the cultural nuances and ensuring every subject felt comfortable and valued. Whether it was a bustling market scene in Hanoi or a quiet village tucked away in the hills, he knew exactly how to engage with the community, making them feel like they were an integral part of the experience.

His passion for portraits was evident at every stop. I found myself constantly inspired by his ability to capture raw emotions through his camera—there was an authenticity in his work that made every image come alive. He would guide us on how to approach people, how to engage with them respectfully, and how to make them feel seen. I ended up taking portraits I’m immensely proud of, ones that speak not just of the people I met, but of the connection I shared with them in that fleeting moment.

Beyond the people, the landscapes were a true photographer’s dream. From the lush, terraced rice fields, to the tranquil waters of Be River every location was handpicked to provide the perfect backdrop for our photography. What made the experience even more magical was the way Nathan would time our visits, ensuring we caught the perfect light—whether it was the golden hour at dawn or the soft, diffused light of an overcast afternoon.

The diversity of Vietnam’s landscapes offered endless opportunities for stunning shots. One moment we were wandering through the misty mountains, capturing the dramatic scenery, and the next we were exploring the dense jungles or walking through ancient towns where history came alive in every alley.

What truly set this photography tour apart was the meticulous attention to detail. Nathan wasn’t just focused on technical photography; he emphasized the essence of the moment. It was about seeing the light, noticing the subtle expressions, and capturing the pulse of the place. Whether it was the intricate texture of an old building or the light filtering through the trees, he ensured we didn’t miss a single detail. Every shot had a purpose, and every detail was considered, making the tour feel deeply immersive.

He took the time to provide personalized feedback, tailoring tips to each participant’s skill level. Whether you were a seasoned professional or a beginner, he made sure everyone felt supported and inspired. He encouraged creativity and experimentation, yet always with the goal of honing our craft and developing a deeper connection with the environment and people around us.

This photography tour was an experience I will never forget. It wasn’t just about taking beautiful pictures—it was about immersing yourself in a culture, connecting with its people, and capturing the soul of Vietnam through a lens. Nathan's passion for portraiture, his deep love for the country, and his impeccable attention to every detail made this tour feel like a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. For anyone looking to expand their photographic skills while gaining a genuine appreciation for a country and its people, this tour is a must.

The best and perfectly organized trip in life by far. Combining local charkter and the pleasure of traveling with photography under the supervision of an expert, with discreet help in photo editing without imposing only your own solutions

Nepal 2024 was my third tour with NHP. My eyes are full of stories and my heart is pumped with beautiful memories. I live and work in South Asia and yet never thought twice before attending any of these tours (considering they’re not too far from home). Each time you learn new skills, culturally become more aware and come back fulfilled.

Special shout out to Maciej - the lead photographer on this tour. He was an absolute delight to learn from. Easy going, effortless and a thorough professional.

Amazing first visit to Nepal and its multi cultural heartland. Amazing scenery and the images of the daily lives of the people of this wonderful country will stick in my mind for ever. Traffic !! chaotic, but nobody lost their temper and didnt see one accident in 14 days. The variety of life and death is amazing, the preparation of bodies by the side of the river in Pashupatinath temple complex was very thought provoking. Kathmandu, Patan, Chitwan reserve, where we saw Rhinos and deer, missed seeing a tiger , but maybe next time. As MacArthur said I shall return.

I have just returned from my second photography trip with Nathan - the first was in Ladakh, this one Indonesia and Bali. As a photographer, I am at an intermediate level. This trip definitely helped move both my camera and post-processing skills to a higher level. Perhaps I'm nudging advanced now.

Nathan took us to wonderful venues at times that were most expedient for the light that helps get the great shots. His suggestions with settings and set-ups was invaluable.

While there was great beauty in the places we visited, it is Nathan's energy and the way people respond to it, that is special. It manifests most clearly in interactions with locals, especially at markets. His way of building rapport creates a wave of good will that people like me can follow. It creates opportunities for beautiful interactions and photos among the vendors and customers. When sharing with friends, they tell me they like the photos of the people best, and I agree with them.

There is no lollygagging on a trip with Nathan - there is light from sun-up to sun-down and we were out there taking advantage of every minute of that light. If you want to grow photographically, and experience beauty and vibrant life, there is no better experience than travelling with Nathan.

I just returned from my second tour with Nathan Horton Photography Tours and, like before, I am impressed.

This time it was a tour of Java and Bali followed by an optional extension to Sumba. The photography opportunities were fantastic. We have been to many wonderful places at the right time of day to allow for the best light possible. Photography instructions we received at each location were very helpful and geared to everyone’s individual skill level. I came back with a huge number of photos that I am pretty proud of. The hotels we stayed at were great quality, very comfortable, in beautiful locations.

What I found most comforting was Nathan and Tim’s flexibility and great organization. Due to flight delays, I arrived late. Tim immediately made sure to adjust my hotel and transfer arrangements to match my new arrival times. Nathan adjusted the time the group left for a shoot so I could join them as soon as I arrived.

I highly recommend Nathan Horton Photography Tours.

Nathan Horton’s Bali and Java photography tour was an absolute game-changer. As someone who’s been on several photo tours, I can confidently say this one stands out. The intimate group size and personalized itinerary created an exceptional experience.

Nathan’s teaching style is both informative and inspiring. I learned so much about capturing and editing photos, skills I’m already putting to use. But it wasn’t just about photography; i liked that he already knew where to go and at what time so we could capture the images. I can’t wait to join another tour with Nathan!

The experience of traveling with Nathan surpassed any expectations I had. Not only the tour runs smoothly but also, he has designed an expedition to cover the best of Java and Bali. From golden sand beaches to temples located in unusual and gorgeous locations, rice terraces, rice fields, waterfalls and the privilege to witness the sunrise in one of the most beautiful volcanoes in the world. Besides, I learned immensely from portrait photography in markets and other settings. Furthermore, beyond the photography technical aspects and being a great teacher, Nathan’s guidance to connect with local people and to give back to the community is one of the highlights of this experience and something I valued a lot. We truly got to know more of Indonesia and its people thanks to his kind and human approach. Most appreciated it! Highly recommended! Can’t wait to participate again in one of his Asia tours.

I recently returned home from my 4th trip with Nathan Horton Photography Tours. My first trip was Vietnam – the North, followed by Cambodia, Rajasthan and Nepal (Upper Mustang), all in the last 12 months.

Nathan and his team are experts in guiding tours to remote locations in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia. This is a huge advantage of traveling with Nathan because participants can enjoy the ride and concentrate on photography while Nathan’s team takes care of all of the travel arrangements. The itineraries are well planned around several shooting locations every day that Nathan uses for teaching. You learn camera settings for wide range of different lighting situations such as: sunsets where you shoot directly into the sun, interior shots with extremely low light, and portraits using window or door light.

New technical skills are always good to acquire, but what makes Nathan truly unique is the way he connects with people. I’ve traveled with several other photography tour groups but never had a leader who is as warm and friendly with people as Nathan is. Watching Nathan connect with people everywhere is inspiring. He instilled confidence in me to go into the street on my own and engage with people. By the time I got to Rajasthan, I could easily go on my own into a street or village and use my camera to meet people, make images and enjoy every minute of it.

I brought home superb portfolios from each trip, but it was the cultural immersion and engaging with people that made traveling Nathan Horton Photography tours one of the best things I’ve done for my photography.

Whether you are just beginning or are an advanced photographer, I would highly recommend traveling with Nathan Horton Photography tours.
