So many ads about the Tel Aviv Biennale of Crafts and Design 2023 that we had to see for ourselves. Sorry - nothing to write home about.
Just disappointed. Somehow, the Biennale got marvelous reviews from art critics.
I will wait for the next endeavor.

This is a smooth place of history, art, nature and philosophy. A cocktail of impressions… four hours flied like one moment.

ממש ממש מאכזב! זה מוזיאון לאיך נראו מוזיאונים במאה הקודמת.
ישן מאכזב ובלי תכלית למעט חנות המוזיאון שברמה גבוה....

A lot of the museum is under renovation with many exhibits either closed or only partially open. The exhibits that are open are good, and we’ll curated, but at this price point, you’d expect a much more functioning museum. The only redeeming feature is the excellent shop.

This used to be a lovely museum, focused on educating children about archaeology and ancient culture. Sadly, it's abandoned that mission and is trying to become a second-rate museum of modern art, a kind of ersatz Tel-Aviv Museum.

We used to love meandering with our kids among the interactive buildings. Those are now abandoned. The olive press building: neglected. The folklore building: closed. The water-mill building has not seen water in years. The sundials and locomotives: inaccessible. The craft area, which used to feature artisans practicing their crafts to the amazed looks of children, is empty of people. The glass-blowing room is a dark theater for dada films.

Several other structures maintain their original content but are gradually taken over by boring avante-garde displays. If only that funding had been used to educate. There is no relationship between the obscure "installations" and the original displays. They teach nothing. The Rothschild Pavillion has an anodyne history of Rothschild, a three minute dada film showing a Japanese man drinking and spitting water from a puddle, and toilets. The toilets were the highlight. I hope to God nobody paid for that film.

What a let down. I hope this museum can find its purpose again.

I visited the Eretz Israel Museum and, while I rarely leave a review, I felt strongly about doing so in this instance. I want to note the following (with particular attention to #3 below):
1. The museum complex is primarily outdoors, and there is little guidance of how to navigate the exhibits. This museum is not the refuge from the heat one may expect, especially as you search randomly around the campus on a hot summer day.
2. The exhibits themselves leave a lot to be desired, appearing, as other reviewers have noted, as collections of objects rather than coherent exhibits (to give an example, one building was a collection of coins throughout different periods, with a completely unrelated audio exhibit in the center contrasting prayers of different religions). Notably, we were told there is no audio guide available due to COVID-19. At this stage of the pandemic, other museums have brought back audio guides a long time ago (or moved them to an app on a person's phone), and it is unclear why this museum is an exception. The text descriptions are lacking without an audio guide.
3. The main item I want to note is the current special exhibition named "Field Hospital X." There was very little explanation of what this exhibition was, so when we opened the door to go in, we were surprised to find a large room designed to look like a field hospital. We were promptly given ticket numbers and were told to wait to be called in a waiting room. We sat for ten minutes watching a video about the various "care kits" that are part of the exhibition, which involve watching a harrowing short film on different topics designed to make the visitor reconsider societal problems. The chorus of a song stating "My father cut off my hands" played repeatedly, as well as (not making this up) a video of a endoscope put down the singer's throat showing their vocal chords as they sang this chorus. Among the creepy images on the screen were questions like "are you the knife? or are you the wound? you can be both the knife and the wound." My wife and I decided that this experience was clearly not for us and got up to ask about the length. After being reprimanded repeatedly for “not following the instruction to wait until your number is called,” we were told it was at least forty minutes. Given that we’re not actual patients of a hospital, we left.
I fully acknowledge that this type of experiential art is not my cup of tea. I am not an art critic, and I’m not looking to be one. However, I think it is critical to make several points about this exhibit from the perspective of someone planning a day of activities and visiting this museum.
A. It should be far clearer what the exhibit is before individuals enter. A small note before you enter saying that it "might provoke a strong emotional reaction" is not a sufficient alert of what is in store. Put simply, I am on a vacation and am not looking to be part of a psychological experience. Being given a hard time for not following instructions (like I’m a patient) is extremely inappropriate. Like choosing to ride a roller coaster at an amusement park, individuals can participate if they want but there’s nowhere near enough disclosure for individuals to make an informed decision.
B. The content of this exhibit has nothing to do with the other content of the Eretz Israel museum. Without better disclosure about what’s inside, a person is led to believe it is related to the rest of the museum. It is very out of place.
C. It also must be much clearer how long this exhibition is. Folks visiting Tel Aviv have limited time. If we hadn't left after the "waiting room," we'd have been stuck in this experience for 40+ minutes. People should know going in how long of an experience they're embarking on, so they can choose for themselves if this is something they want to do. Again, we were given a hard time for not completing the experience, so individuals should be able to plan accordingly.

Again, anyone can read further about the exhibition itself and, if it’s your cup of tea, enjoy. However, as we saw on our visit, the museum can do far more to help individuals to decide for themselves if this is something they want to do and how they want to spend their time in Israel.

To end on a positive note, the gift shop is awesome and has amazing stuff. The staff were generally very kind as well.

There are a lot of places that are closed on Saturday in Tel Aviv. Eretz Israel Museum was open and we're glad we visited. Interesting exhibits of artifacts, coins, stamps, glass and other antiquities. Highly recommended.

À voir en tandem avec le Muséum of Jewish People. Dans le même secteur. Un jardin archéologique, pour une promenade studieuse. Une boutique profuse de cadeaux à faire pour tous les a^ges, toutes les bourses, tous les goûts.
