The closure of Myanmar’s last independent newspaper marks a new milestone in the country’s political descent even if our Former Secretariat U Thant will sit in UN it will not happen.
As overt censorship became a thing of the past and new licenses were issued, the number of news outlets proliferated, in the surest sign of confidence in ongoing political and economic reforms.
Now only online news media remain as the last lifeline for millions of citizens desperate for reliable sources of information amid the military-induced freefall. Now U Thant House is still not yet opened during military coup.

Way to learn simple life of great man

The House is located in a small lane, out of main road. The direction is not precise with Google map so I got confused and lost before eventually reached it. I used public bus and need to walked nearly one km. to arrive there. Maybe getting there with taxi is easier.

Need to pay fee but couldn't remember, may be 10000 Kyats. There are display and VDO to show life of U Thant. He was very knowledgeable and seem to be very compromising during his career as UN Secretary General.

入場費和內容相較之下不太合襯

吳丹是60年代到70年代初的聯合國秘書長，對於後來與國際社會幾乎割席的緬甸，這是在鎖國前的最大榮光。2012年吳丹的孫輩發現這土地在政府的持有權，於是寫信給總統登盛建議開放參觀。現在裡面的東西其實並不多，說是故居也是極為簡單的，主要是一些照片的展示，以及紀錄片的放映。在冷戰時期擔任聯合國秘書長，吳丹涉入古巴危機、六日戰爭、剛果戰爭、印巴戰爭等衝突的協調工作。當然，還有調解失敗，美中蘇藉人民民意打得很爽的越戰。仰光的景點參觀並不便宜，動輒就要100多塊台幣，吳丹故居沒什麼特別可看的文物，也要收200台幣。同樣價格的著名地標大金塔可以看的東西和待得時間都大勝這裡，若非特別對國際政治和歷史有興趣者，大可思考一下。

A very interesting visit, and a beautiful house

I spent one hour this morning in the house of former UN Secretary general Mr U Thant.
Few personal objects remain from the 50's, when Mr U Thant was living there, but the house is a well preserved example of British colonial architecture, and I learned a lot about U Thant's important role in some of the worse conflicts of the 20th century: the Katanga secession, the Cuba missile crisis, the conflict in the Middle East,...

A nicely renovated house with interesting photos ( we saw them through the windows) and outside, this is away from the main tourist area and the other sites. It only warrants a visit if you have time to kill. Be aware that it is not open every day.

A necessary history for the Burmese

This bungalow was saved from ruin by members of U Thant's family. An easy to follow history of this statesman/politician/world leader is provided by placards and photographs throughout the rooms in the house. The memory of this remarkable person had been more or less erased by the military regimes for whom his ideas of tolerance and patience were an anathema. Much of his thought is surely needed in practice in the country today. It is good to see his historical memory preserved here. Non-Burmese, while not the audience for this exhibit will enjoy it as well.

Not a whole lot but still worth a stop

U Thant House is the former residence of the third UN Secretary General that had been neglected until U Thant's grandson took it upon himself to renovate it into a small museum. Not having known anything about him before, I found the small display very informative. While nothing was flashy, it was well organized and concise. A dozen or so photos with famous leaders and celebrities decorate the house along with the descriptions of each stage of U Thant's life. It's a bit out of the way but well worth an hour stop to learn about the life of U Thant.

Beautiful visit and terrific context in a country where context is elusive.

U Thant House is a must to add to local and foreigner itineraries.

Local visitors offer only what they can afford. 10,000 MMK for foreigners is more than a reasonable entrance fee for an experience that not only makes history come alive, but also ties Myanmar history to the rest of the world in a way that no other place in the country manages.
Visit and learn about the role of such a key global diplomat on the world stage. The grounds are well maintained and offer a significant respite from the madness of modern Yangon.
Younger kids (maybe 8+) can also benefit from U Thant House, as several of the displays are interactive and request written thoughts on such weighty universal concepts of peace and equality.

Our times are complex and nuanced. Myanmar itself is full of nuance. A visit to this place offers time for reflection about both our planet and additional historical context which is badly needed for visitors and residents of Myanmar.

An interesting and modest man. The house is nice, but not worthy a visit. The ‘museum’ doesn’t offer facilities like coffee or explanations. As foreigner you are requested to pay MMK 10.000 entrance fee. Difficult to find. Avoid this useless non-attraction
