Yeah... it's just a residential neighborhood. Hutongs are everywhere... Lingdang is just one of many. I cannot imagine tourists finding great pleasure walking around my neighborhood where I live but a hutong s not like my neighborhood. Think small and squat connected homes fronting onto alleys and walkways that are lived in... not gleaming and shiny clean.. rather old and rundown but with character and an local style. Great for those who want to live like a local; not great for those who just want bling.
Note: I couchsurfed with a guy who lived in the hutong and it was a great experience learning how to live like a local. Loved it.

Our group had a rickshaw tour through this area (I'm pretty sure it was this one). Going through the Hutong gives you a taste of what life is like for many people in this city. Our main guide for Beijing spent her childhood in a hutong, so we had the benefit of having some first person history to relate to during our tour. It was interesting to see the layout of all of the homes and what the quadrangle design signifies. Our host explained that the government is now trying to preserve some of the hutong buildings and is offering incentives to people to stay in these areas so their history will not be lost. Even though the streets and alleyways were quite narrow, I was surprised at how open and airy it felt inside our host's home. We had our best meal of our entire trip at another home in the hutong during our tour. Although I would not venture down these streets and alleyways on my own, I do recommend a guided tour so you can see 'the other side' of living in Beijing. I am happy that they are working to protect and preserve these areas.

Pekin de eski yerleşim bölgesi olan bu mahalle koruma altına alınmıştır. İki kişilik bisikletler ile tüm mahalleyi gezebilirsiniz. Ancak mahallenin içi çok temiz ve bakımlı değil. Bu nedenle eski şehir herkese hitap etmeyebilir.

En Beijing la ciudad está diseñada siguiendo el Feng Shui, de esta manera cerca de pozos de agua fueron construyendo los llamados Hutongs que son como unos barrios antiguos compuestos por callesitas estrechas, y casas pintadas de gris y rojo.
Visitamos este Hutong específicamente por recomendación de nuestro guía, quien nos contó que este es el más antiguo.
Aun residen locales, las casas son pequeñas y no cuentan con baño sino que comparten con los demás en unos baños ubicados en las callesitas.
Pudimos entrar a una casa de una familia local que ha heredado su casa desde varias generaciones atrás y el dueño nos contó que el precio actual de una casa allá es muy elevado, y que nadie los vende sino que pasan por generaciones.
Nosotros lo recorrimos en esas típicas bicicletas que un señor conduce que llevan un carruaje pequeño donde caben dos personas. Y luego nos bajamos para ingresar a la casa de este señor. Después caminamos hasta llegar a una calle convulsionada y divertida que es tipica porque está llena de bares y restaurantes.
Realmente vale la pena, eso sí, aquí hay que tener un guía, no porque te pierdas, sino para que pueda darte información valiosa acerca de los miles de años que están encerrados en toda China.

This tour was interesting in that you get a sense of how life was in olden times. We got some great information in relation to how the courtyard buildings are organized and the meaning of the doors. Interesting

We had an organised group tour using the rickshaws and they took us through breeze block constructions which had no character at all. Stopped to look at a gate and then had tea with a local family - that was good. Find a better example elsewhere.

If you have heard about the good & bad of Hutong(s) of Beijing, then a CULT connection may lead you to a wonderland of something "unexpected"...Due to a numerous of inquiries about the Hutong through our tour guide (as I'v heard and read about even while growing up ) as the wonders of Hutong with particularly people from Beijing...the desires of a forbidden fruit were just as tempted as Eve with the delicious apple.
The tour guide finally agreed for a lunch within the Hutong with the rides of ri ckshaw through the layers and winding alleys as the secret cult with the unspoken signs and languages as we had arrived an almost unmarked old fashioned residential home then lead to a few rooms crowed in between homes and there was the lunch room right next a kitchen with two ladies cooking up the foods for you (and with a group just left before us).
As the foods were not be characterized as excellent and yet it was totally acceptable for what a last minute request can be accommodated.
The riding of the rickshaw and experiencing the small scale services vs large tour setting were worth every minute of it (the satisfaction of your curiosity can take place of many things in your life, sometimes.

We visited with some friends as this area was presented to us as a historic part of Beijing that we should not miss. The government is building homes and fixing areas and trying to draw tourists. We took a pedicab or rickshaw ride and our driver got lost. He spoke no English and we spoke no Chinese and much of the area he took us through was extremely run down! Finally he was able to find someone on the street who made some contacts and got us to the house where we were to have a homemade meal. The meal was excellent and Mr and Mrs Wong were very pleasant. Later a few of us climbed the Drum tower and attended a tea ceremony in the Bell tower. The area needs a lot of work but things seem to be moving in the right direction. would definitely not attempt to explore it without a group.

un hutong, pas le plus typique de tous, rien de spécial à voir ni à faire un peu dommage, de plus ce n'est pas le plus beau. Y'a mieux.

I visited the Hutong area through a travel agent on the cycle rickshaw. The area it self did not interest us much as this is an village kind of area within a big city. Similar areas you can find many cities in India, but if you have not been to such places OK. In my personal opinion if you have an limited time in Beijing then one could give it a miss. We had a 'traditional' lunch which was a bit interesting but overall at 150 Yuan per person I found this too pricey for the experience.
I have been to Intramuros in Manila which I found much more interesting than this.
