To get to Sai Kung to visit Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geo Park, it’s easy to get onboard MTR to Diamond Hill and exit C2 to take bus 92 from here to Sai Kung. You will alight at the last stop which will take you to the Volcanic Discovery Centre. The bus ride is about an 60-80minutes. Highly recommended to join a half-day tour of East Dam and Biu Tsim Kok Geo trail guided tour. Lucky to have Klaus the tour guide who is witty, informative and knowledgeable. You will come out enriched with knowledge of the volcanic structure, hexagonal rock formations, colums and enjoy the picturesque sceneries.

The Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark was designated in 2009 and includes over 150 sq. km around the eastern and northeastern parts of the New Territories. These are protected lands and see with unique and rare geology that can be seen and visited as part of organised tours and independent sightseeing. Most of the Geopark is accessible from Sai Kung and the Ma Liu Shui Pier by way of ferry boats.
There is a Volcanic Discovery Centre in Sai Kung which provides much information about the UNESCO Global Geopark, particularly the nearby area, which was shaped by a super volcano that existed here millions of years ago. You will find smaller information and heritage centres located at some of the respected Geopark locations as well as on the official website. From the Volcanic Discovery Centre and their website, you can organise guided tours as well.
The first of the two main areas of the Geopark are centred around Sai Kung where you can arrange visits so Sharp Island, Ninepin and Ung Kong and the High Island Reservoir (which you can reach directly by land). The majority of the other inclusions are found around Double Haven east of the Plover Cove Country Park, these are accessible by ferry boats from Ma Liu Shui and include Ap Chau, Kat O, Lai Chi Wo and the remarkable Ting Ping Chau. A few more locations are found in the the Tolo Harbour and along its northern coast. These include Port Island, Ma Shui Chau (best visited by kayak from Tai Mai Tuk or Wu Kai Sha Beach) and Lai Chi Chong, which can be visited by overland hike through the Sai Kung West Country Park or by ferry from Ma Liu Shui.
Many of these places offer remarkable rare geology with highlights being the hexagonal shaped volcanic columns at and around the High Island Reservoir East Dam (see Po Pin Chau) and the island of Tung Ping Chau. You'll find very good hiking opportunities at and around these places, heritage learning opportunities about the history of local habitation and plenty of beautiful landscapes, countryside and island settings.
Overall, the Hong Kong UNESCO Geopark represents a rich collection of outdoor sightseeing opportunities here in Hong Kong. They are rather isolated compared to the main sightseeing in the city and do require some planning in advance. For example, ferries out to the Double Haven sites can only be reached by public ferries on weekends and public holidays. Same for Tung Ping Chau. Further, overnight accommodations and general facilities are scare to non-existent in the UNESCO areas, which means most are day trip locations only and you need to come prepared with adequate food and water. However, with the right planning and use of website planning resources, time spent within the Geopark can be arranged fairly comfortably as both organised and independent visits.

This UNESCO site is well worth the trouble to visit. The most scenic spots is a long way from the entrance of the park, and the best approach is to get a taxi from Sai Kung town center (about $80-$90). Of course this means you have to get to Sai Kung first. The return trip is a more challenging - particularly late afternoon on the weekends when everyone is trying to leave at the same time. There will be a fight for taxis. So visit on a weekday if possible, you will have the stunning sceneries to yourself - and that includes spectacular views of hexagonal columns and the coffer dams of the High Island Reservoir. The main trail is easy and takes 1.5-2 hours depending on your pace, but there are side trails to neighboring hilltops which are a bit more challenging but quite doable. Remember there is little shade and no shops on the trail, so planning according. Do explore Sai Kung town for its many eateries after afterwards for a thoroughly enjoyable day trip.

The Hong Kong UNESCO Global GeoPark was officially inaugurated in 2011 and includes an area of 150 square kilometres of the eastern and northeastern areas of the New Territories in Hong Kong. It includes various locations some of which have rare and remarkable geological structures and land formations that can be enjoyed by way of land and boat tour as well as hikes of various degrees of difficulty.
One particular highlight that is easy to view up close is the large escarpment seen just below the East Dam of the High Island Reservoir in the Sai Kung East Country Park. This is the second stop on short High Island Geo Trail (1.4 km). Here you find a wall of volcanic hexagonal columns in pristine condition that you can explore freely. The majority of the wall is of the straight and classic organ pipe shape. These are beautiful to look at and photograph particularly well when sky conditions are favourable and in the mornings when light is soft.
A short distance from the hexagonal columns near the cofferdam structure is another unique geological formation called the Fault Breccia Belt. This is worth a quick view before proceeding along the trail to see the remarkable S-shaped hexagonal columns. These volcanic columns where formed as a result of earthquake activity that disturbed the forming columns before they were completely formed around 140 million years ago. It is a rarely seen geological formation that can be viewed up close at this location.
There are additional hexagonal columns to see in the UNESCO Global GeoPark but these are the ones that are easiest to access and explore on foot. The others are seen from a distance on hikes or on boat rides which can be arranged at the Volcano Discovery Centre in Sai Kung.
Note: You can take a taxi from the Sai Kung village to visit the volcanic hexagonal columns and Geo Trail below the East Dam. The ride is around 20-25 minutes (HK$130 one way). At present, there is no public transportation to this particular location.
Note: Visit the official website to learn more about locations and what times of geology you can expect to see in the various places that make up the UNESCO Global GeoPark.

The Geopark has been well documented with many facilities available for people to learn more about it. Boat trips are available and the Geopark Museum in Sai Kung is worth a visit. The museum displays different types of rock found in the Geopark and explains their origin. Located near the water front and Sai Kung pier, the museum is centrally located. Its displays appeal to both children and adults.

It's a bit far, but worth going. Scenes from the dam and at Biu Tsim Kok Viewing point are great.
My transportation (I was lucky on my way to Highland Reservoir there was no traffic at all and waiting time for minibus/taxi was almost nothing. I hit the road from Mongkok at 10:20am):
Take mini bus to Sai Kung at Mongkok. Mini bus terminus is on Dundas Street next to Kwong Wah Hospital in Mongkok. Fare is HK$18. The ride was 45 min
After arriving at Sai Kung Town Centre, which is the terminus, I boarded mini bus no. 7. The terminus is close to Sai Kung Pier. Fare is HK$13. I got off at Pak Tam Chung (not a terminus). I think the ride was 20 min
Then I lined up for a taxi. I share a taxi with a couple to East Dam of High Land Reservoir. It was a red taxi, i.e. town taxi. The trip costed us $90. It would be cheaper if it was a green taxi, i.e. New Territories taxi. The ride was 20 min
For my way back, I first took taxi, then changed to bus 94 at Pak Tam Chung back to Sai Kung Town Centre, then mini bus back to Mongkok

This is a worthwhile tour. The guides are informative and friendly. They are well versed in English, Putonghua and their own native Cantonese. The 2 guides spoke in English since the group was mostly English speaking. They pointed out the igneous geological formations, sea arches and other natural features. Although the tour was 3 hours, never a dull moment. Upon return to the pier, there are many fishing boats displaying their catch to be selected by hungry customers. The sea-catch can be taken to local restaurants to be cooked for a small fee. The guides made it entertaining.

We booked a kayaking trip with guide through Wild Hong Kong. We brought our own lunch and ate on Whiskey Beach. This was a very nice day trip and offers an amazing contrast to the harbor between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.
