This vehicle rental agency recommended decades ago by Lonely Planet has already missed the service expectations of the modern days. I’ve had a professional driver (I would not mention his name just to protect his privacy) with top driving skill and good humor, eager to share about himself and his country. Considering the age and education, his English is quite decent, though information provided was rough, and deeper discussion on history or tradition was tough.

He is definitely not the worst guide and his company manager neither, however, the whole experience turns out to be just one of the worst ever among my past one decade of traveling in 30+ countries, just because I was busy with working and got no time to check myself but totally relied on them.

From the manager Edy, I got most of the questions clarified and requirements met. However, I was not told beforehand that to get to the top of the Borobudur, I needed online reservation in advance because the number of tourists for a closer look are set limited. Eventually I could only stand far away to watch almost just the silhouette of the temple without any details under the strong sun. There was also no reminder of appreciating the temple during sun rise or sunset, not planned in the itinerary or at least suggested as an option in the email. The whole itinerary was quite rough even for a beginner traveler.

When I asked Edy to book for 1-2 traditional theatre shows, he replied “yes sure”, but did not do anything in advance only until the last moment when we discovered certain days have no show. When I requested to have an additional half-day tour of 1-2 temples around Malang, he just replied “sure, we will try to do that” without price change, and surely, salary change of and communication with the driver. Understandably, the driver was reluctant to do it.

Maybe for most Chinese tourists they’ve welcomed, just meeting their basic requirement of taking photos is fine. If you cannot and don’t feel doing, please say no and I can do it myself, instead of vague “yes sir”. Especially for the 3-day hiking, no information was provided on clothing, gears, road conditions or equipment. Luckily, I’m a frequent hiker and I’ve got a friend who came months ago. Besides, I don’t understand why Edy started a conversation as suggesting me start my own tourism business and collaborate with him meanwhile he does not know me at all. So I could only end this awkwardness by saying “I earn much more”.

The tour started quite well from Yogyakarta Airport, and the driver was quite flexible in adapting to my photoshoot requests at certain spots. Glad about his kindness, I paid for his meals and drinks for the first days, knowing well the driver’s expenses were already covered in the 600+ USD service fee I paid to the company. Even though I was in bed ready to sleep, when the driver knocked on my door to ask for a hot shower, I let him in.

However, things turned weird the next day after I finished the breakfast at Sukuh Cottage and visited the Sukuh Temple, when he was actually already getting tired of driving to one more spot than programed (but did not say the truth of BEING TIRED). He asked me to pay for my extra bills, no, actually OURS, with ¾ his orders and just one drink from myself. Although I’ve shared my dinner with him, he ordered more snacks without asking if I would like to eat with (obviously I wouldn’t). The same with water, I did not need to buy bottled water because I have a bottle and purification pills, and I try to waste less plastic. He offered to buy me bottled water meanwhile declined to pay his own bill, knowing I never bought any water anywhere.

It was happening all the time: as long as we stood together in front of a hawker or a checkout counter, and happened to buy something at the same time, he would always tell me the total price of our orders and stared at me without taking out his purse or saying anything more, such as “My part is X and yours is Y”. So I assumed as a guest, I was expected to pay for everything. If, as later explained by himself, he really would like to pay for his own, he would already have done so when asking for price.

Java would charge a parking fee everywhere and occasionally temple donations at the entrance, not common in China, which was not mentioned by Edy either. They both later said some restaurants anyway charge tourists high in order to cover the drivers’ meals; sounds like their guests are left with no option but to be charged twice or three times of the regular food. I totally understand my driver wanted to save money on accommodation but why street food? Like he does not spend any money for food off the work? To be honest he desires more than me small pleasures like tea and cigarette, yet I’m here to pay.

At first, I thought it’s OK, especially for the two days in Yogyakarta, my driver really accompanied me longer. Maybe he would occasionally buy me a small coffee (never, even when I clearly said you buy this time, usually quite small amount like fruits we got together), then it’s also OK for me to buy him big meals. For me, friendship needs interexchange, no matter big or small. However, he wanted more and never showed a signal of giving back until I spoke out, which frustrated him, though I’ve been feeling completely taken advantage of and exploited from the very beginning. The most absurd, was to share a hotel room with him!

When we arrived the hostel at Bromo, he insisted that Edy booked a room for two and showed me the chat snapshot in Indonesian. I did not want to translate or make a fuss because I needed to sleep right away to prepare for morning sunrise, so I just asked if he snores, he said “I don’t know, and his families never tell”. (How come??) However strange, I was told he had a car accident, not in good condition, so out of kindness I offered him the other bed in my room, even though I choose to mostly travel alone just because I’m a light sleeper. He got in and out many times, watched videos, smoked, burped, flushed the toilet, snored the whole night, even entered the room to pack his stuff like his own room when I told him to wait while taking a shower, in fact he would have the whole morning to pack before I returned.

I did not get any sleep before Bromo, so for the next day Ijen, I chose to sleep a bit more, and skipped the blue fire. I cannot blame I did not see it all because of my driver, but when I said maybe we can leave later than the scheduled time, he did not remind me of anything. Because I spent almost 2 hours staring at the empty darkness of night Bromo and was freezing to death, I imagined the same situation at Ijen. Obviously, he does not know much about the detailed itineraries and what to pay attention to about these two volcano hiking routes just like me, because he has never been there himself, only drives to the entrance.

As later told, he had started to hate me as a trouble before Bromo, so almost stopped the whole tour introduction, and wished to end his service as soon as possible, in his word, “You’ve broken my heart by talking about price”, yes, by discussing about his service first with him not his boss, by drawing a baseline and by protecting my right?! I’ve told him many times it’s never about the price per se but my feeling of being used. After his whole attitude and our relation changed, he still kept on joking improperly such as mimicking my laughing in an erotic female voice. I had to stop him multiple times when it’s getting very offensive and annoying.

He was unreachable, wouldn’t listen, kept on mumbling the same thing while I was explaining my feeling. The way he communicated was like everything had happened because of me, which was even more shocking than what actually happened. It was my fault of walking too fast and not listening to his guidance (he could easily say “wait”), my fault of not making a phone call to his boss to clarify the room (isn’t it his duty?), my fault of not wakening him up which led myself not sleeping enough (if I did so he would perhaps hate me more), my fault of not telling him he should pay for his own food, my fault of drawing a baseline for his exploitation, my fault of asking him to dine at a cheaper place, my fault of paying too fast before he takes out cash, my fault of distracting him from peaceful driving. When I really did waken him up (mentally), he rejected to admit it was partially his service problem and even started educating me with big talks like emotion and stress. He talked whenever he liked but when he was not in the mood to listen, I was ordered to shut up.

The only reason of my situation with my driver, I could reckon, is cultural, age and individuality difference. Like what he said, it was his first-time building connection with a Chinese (actually only bad experience in the past) among few other foreign friendships, he’d better know that in China the older at working age (he’s 47) usually pays more than the younger, and friendship is mutual with one paying this time and the other the next, even tiny means true heart. However, in his case, if I don’t say anything, mine is his and his is his, forever. Even just on the first day of his service, he suggested tipping.

In China and many other countries, visitors from far away are always treated with uttermost generosity. If I stayed friends with him, I would pay for his service the rest of my life, and whenever he had a chance to visit China, I would pay for his everything because he would have been a friend instead of a driver. Sadly, none of these are going to happen. It was truly pitiful that I felt little hospitality from the most intimate person during my first visit to this country, and the person I intended to start a friendship with, turned away just because I spoke out my opinions. I only feel lighter-skinned foreigners shall pay more here, just like the colonist times. Maybe all European and American tourists who left him good impression just felt embarrassed to speak out. They travel as 2 or 3 in one group, while I’m alone, which makes the whole payment thing even more unfair.

I really don’t know how a guest can do better than what my driver has got: smoke while driving, take a break however long he likes even in a boring gasoline station, no big luggage to carry around, interesting talks, share food and hot shower, neglect his weird sounds, talks and loud burps, excuse him of his first time driving around Tumpak Sewu area (my tour guide inside did not speak any English BTW), except that I did not pay for EVERYTHING, well from him, no thank you or heartful sorry.

Even before we separated in Surabaya, I was so close to offering him a tip just because he is a good driver, he started complaining again, why I touched his phone and changed the destination. OK, I made a mistake, but after he inputted somewhere more wrong, in Malang. He could not bear any more minute’s driving next to me like I’ve wasted his too much time, though I did not say a word for the whole drive. Out of the same anger (honestly, I don’t get it), he deleted all my photos taken during the first days. I was about to give 3-4 stars to this company despite all the above issues, just because I truly appreciate the driver’s skill and service, unfortunately, he really disappointed me without saving a little bit of it till the end of the journey.

Ironically, he questioned the Lonely Planet I was reading, the only guidebook instead of TripAdvisor that actually recommends this company, because the book covers too many places and put him under pressure to drive for me a bit more than for others.

We highly recommend a trip with Great Tours. We went from Jogja to Tumpak Sewu, Bromo, Ijen crater and ended up the trip in Bali. All was very well prepared, timley and in schedule. The driver, Mr Robert was a lovely compagnon and very helpful all along the way. We came to visit for 3 weeks and wouldn’t manage to see so many places just by ourselves. Well done Great Tours!

We booked a 3-day tour with Edy, owner of Great tours, who made us live a beautiful experience across the island of Java with the driver Deddy, very kind and very helpful at our every request. Recommendation to rely on them if you want to explore the island of Java in true essence.

We did three days and two nights with the organized tour. It was an unforgettable experience! Everything was beautiful and perfect!
We saw some great places and all the guides welcomed us at best.
The tour is very well organized. Our Guide (and driver, Robert) who accompanied us every day is a wonderful person. We have always felt safe, despite the roads being very busy and the mopeds coming from everywhere. He was very patient despite the chaos. He accompanied us everywhere, at the strangest times and always with a smile!
Thanks for everything, it was an unforgettable experience : )

We booked a tour of the island of Java and everything was perfect. Friendliness, professionalism and value for money at levels I have never found with other operators in Indonesia. The driver who accompanied us was Aman, an exquisite person, caring and attentive to the needs of each of us.

We ran into Mr Edy when we had already planned our trip to Java and selected our accommodation. He offered John a very good driver and activities that responded to our requests. He found Borobudur tickets when the official website was selling out. And suggested useful adaptations holding distance and things to see. Thanks to him we focus optimized our stay. Thanks to him. We recommend.

With Great Tours- Mr Edi we organized a 4-day tour of Java and then other trips to Bali.
From the first contact Mr Edi was very helpful, fast and clear in his answers. We agreed the itinerary together and it was possible to adapt it to all our needs. The drivers were equally kind and friendly. The experience in Indonesia would not have been the same without Mr Edi, he made everything easier and everything went well. Consigliatissimo!

I traveled on my honeymoon with my wife and looking on the Lonely Planet I found the name of this agency. We couldn't have made a better choice. They were kind and professional. Edy was always ready to accommodate our every request and Hendra was a great driver. Despite the many hours of Guide was always cool and never tired. In a few words he still managed to leave a mark on us. Thank you for this adventure together!
Agency highly recommended.
