As I have resumed my cultural and historical walking trail, my first in 2023, I am starting in Balestier and visited this memorial hall of Dr Sun Yat Sen, the founding Father of modern China! He is one of my most respected and adored "idols".
It has been about 7 years since my last visit here - Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (孙中山南洋纪念馆，又称晚晴园).
The two storey colonial styled villa has a nice garden and is peaceful and although it's much smaller in size than other museums, it has quite a good collection on Dr Sun and the early history of Singapore, especially about the Chinese communities then.
The exhibits are interesting and insightful, with digital and interactive platforms to bring the history "live".
Dr Sun, the great revolutionary leader against the Qing dynasty who overthrew the government after 11th uprising attempt in Wuhan and formed the modern Republic of China (中华民国), had his ideologies left a great impression in me. They were 天下为公 and 三民主义!
The world belongs to everyone and not just for the few elites. And if everyone is being treated equally, justly and fairly and everything is done in accordance to the law and order, the world will be a better, more peaceful and stable place to live in.
It is good to be back here for a revisitation, the place Dr Sun had stayed during his visits to Singapore and immersed in the rich, diversity and colourful history and legacy of Dr Sun!
There's also a portion of Singapore's history too, mainly about the Chinese communities during the Sino-war, Japanese occupation etc.
The museum is closed on Mondays and admission is free for Singaporeans and $8 for tourists.

One of those underrated museum that is off the path of usual tourist traps.
The place has a good mixed of artifacts dedicated to Sun Yat Sen and also early Singapore history before independence. Everything is well displayed with simple descriptions attached and some are coupled with good usage of multi media aids which bring the viewing and whole visit a joy.
Highly recommended to anyone that wants to learn more of Singapore’s role in the ending China’s Qing dynasty rule.
Tip for those that drive, so parked either at the residential car park nearby or the mall the opposite. There are no parking on site.

孫中山南洋紀念館。
「晚晴園」是華僑張立福先生為母親頤養天年所建的園子。
民國成立前，國父奔走各處，在南洋廣邀華僑匡復中興大業的工作處與居所均在此處。
因為了解歷史,所以參觀起來格外有感觸,是先人的努力,才換來歷史的改變~

Visited the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (Wan Qing Yuan) which was quite an eye-opener into the history of China’s revolution led by Dr Sun Yat Sen from his base in Singapore. It is free admission for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents.
The exterior grounds of this colonial style villa is very well-maintained with manicured lawn, commemorative sculptures and a spectacular bronze sculpted mural wall depicting the history of Nanyang (now known as Singapore).
There are more exhibits to see inside the museum, from old pictures and write-outs of Dr Sun Yat Sen and his fellow comrades, Chinese newspapers, printers to traditional footwear, cheongsam and even furniture. Definitely a must-visit for all who love history, especially families with children and teenagers to learn from history.

We came here for visit, entrance free, since we staycation at Ramada hotel during the Depavali PH 2021.
I am not a person who is interested in museum but I must say they have a special exhibition during our visit on women fashion (old days) which interested me, especially on the "shoes" which were worn by those dynasty women who tied their foot till deformed.... I m surprised at how small the "shoes" are, similar to my fist size . Other things on the rebel leader which is also interesting (bedroom etc), a bit of his history, n others who supported him ..
The environment is soothing. Took quite a bit of photos . Not much crowd.
Can visit!

Good place for history buffs to visit.
From how the Chinese in Singapore were instrumental in the forming of the modern Chinese republic to how certain Chinese figures contributed to the development of Singapore as well.

I visited this Memorial Hall as part of a self-guided Balestier Heritage Trail.
The Balestier precinct is named after Joseph Balestier, the first American Consul to Singapore, who owned a sugarcane plantation there. Hence along the street there are decorative signs showing the sugar cane motifs indicating the past history of this area.
1) I started my walk at 639 Balestier Road which is the site of the famous loong Fatt Tau Sar Piah(the oldest surviving kopitiam in Balestier). 601 to 639 is quite unique it is a single storey shophouses where double storey shophouses are more common.
2) Next stop is the Sun Yat Sun Nanyang Memorial Hall and the Maha Sasanaramsi Burmese Buddhist Temple which are next to each other. At Zhongshan Park , there are some inscriptions detailing the story of Sun Yat Sun on the floor. This Memorial is opened at 10 am. The Buddhist temple has the largest marble Buddha Statue outside Myanmar.
3) Boon Teck Road Water Kiosk no longer offer free tea and water due to the Covid-19 situation,
4) Kwan Yow Luen Shophouse at 412-418 Balestier Road was built in 1928. These richly ornamented shophouses feature detailed plaster stucco figures including two symbolic Sikh guards on their facades. The main pediment features two lions flanked by buffalo figurines.
5) Crossing over to the Balestier Market which was conserved as it is the only rural market left in Singapore.
6) Pre-war Terrace houses which are double storey residential shophouses along Martaban Road. The front doors of these houses are separated from the street by small forecourts, which provide residents with privacy from passers-by. No 13 once housed male nurses who worked at Tan Tock Seng Hospital but it is now a private home. It won the Architectural Heritage Award from URA for the quality of its restoration.
7) Sim Kwong Ho shophouses at 292-312 Balestier Road is more colourful and was built in 1926. It offers outstanding examples of Chinese baroque ( or Singapore eclectic) architecture with colourful tiles and elaborate plaster stucco work of animals such as bats and peacocks. There are elaborate wreaths and garlands placed above French style windows.
8) Balestier Point was completed in 1986 and was inspired by the work of Canadian architect Moshe Safdie.
9) Goh Chor Tua Pek Kong Temple was established in 1847 by Hokkien workers of Joseph Balestier's sugarcane estate. This temple is the oldest surviving landmark from that era. The adorable, free-standing wayang stage is the only one in mainland Singapore.
10) Art Deco Apartment block at 230 and 246 Balestier Road have corner facades with bold vertical fins to convey a sense of height and stature.
A good place for refreshment would be the Whampoa makan Place with its wide choice of local and affordable food. There are also two old-school bakeries nearby which are opened 24 hours, They are Sing Hon Loong at 4 Whampoa Drive and Sweetlands at 10 Kim Keat Lane. I also bought some arabica coffee bean from Lam Yeo Powder factory at 328 Balestier Road.

Entry into the museum is free of charge for Singaporeans and guests of nearby Ramada & Days hotel.
But there is no charge for everyone if you only visit the house outer compound.
Inside you can find artifacts, photos, and newspapers describing Sun Yat Sen's revolutionary activities that led to the overthrow of the Qing dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China.
My favorite part is the bedroom cum study where Dr Sun spent most of his mornings reading and writing letters.

A historically significant site given the importance of the position China has in the geo political sphere today. This will enable an appreciation of the circumstance that led to the end of the last imperial dynasty in China and the revolutionary fervor that was led by Dr Sun.
It wasn’t an easy task and I remember in school his fervour and undying spirit was an inspiring history lesson.
Unfortunately Dr Sun died young and upon his death the young Chinese republic fell into chaos. Imagine what things politically would have been in the mainland and Taiwan if things turned out differently!
Pay attention to the architecture as well. There is an interesting Chinese photographic exhibition on that will show what life was like in Singapore before the tragic Japanese occupation.

This is a nice memorial hall, well worth a visit if you are in the area. Interesting museum and a way to learn about Singapore history (parts of it). But do all other things Singapore has to offer first.
