A lovely mountain that envelopes the city of Sofia. As it surrounds the city it brings an air of freshness an makes you realise it’s all around in every direction which is unusual.

Hotel concierge checked online and the lift was operating. After a taxi ride we arrived and the ski lift was closed. No explanation offered so had to return to our hotel.

Εξαιρετική ημερήσια εκδρομή στη φύση.

Πολύ εύκολη πρόσβαση στο Aleko hut, από το κέντρο της Σόφιας (στάση μετρό "Βιτόσα" και μετά λεωφορείο 66). Πολύ όμορφη η φύση και η διαδρομή (πεζοπορία) προς την κορυφή (Σέρνα βραχ). Υπέροχο και πολύ οικονομικό φαγητό στο καταφύγιο Aleko hut και απολαυστικός ο καφές και το γλυκό στο ξενοδοχείο Moreni.

Были в Болгарии в начале ноября 2022 года.
На обзорной площадке горы Витоша и на Каменной реке .мы
были с замечательными гидами Валентиной и Петром. День был солнечный .
Сверху открывается потрясающий вид на Софию и окрестности.
Там есть небольшое кафе .
А также Валентина и Пётр организовали для нас поездку в Пловдив с посещением местной винодельни с дегустацией вин и обедом в ресторане на территории винодельни.
Валентина и Пётр профессионалы ! Очень доброжелательные .ответственные и пунктуальные. Они спланировали нашу поездку по интересам и организовали трансферы в разные места города. из/в аэропорт . заказали места в рестораны и таверны.
Благодаря им . наш отдых в Софии был замечательным.

A walk in the woods

I walked from my hotel to the Dragalevtski Monastery, a 30 minutes walk up into the VItosha Mountain. Then walked on a 4 km path from there to the Boyana church, most of it in the forest in the mountain. A nice walk, even in the rain.

Prachtig natuurgebied op enkele kilometers van Sofia

Zeer prachtig natuurgebied dat makkelijk te bereiken is met openbaar vervoer ( bus 66) vanuit Sofia. Bus brengt je tot op anderhalf uur wandelen van de top. Het is genieten van elk moment.

A must do when in Sofia is to go to Vitosha mountain, it surrounds Sofia from the south and overlooks it, you can take the metro Vitosha line or the tram no 10 Vitosha line to the end station and then get the bus no 66 to the top of the mountain directly with an amazing ride in-between the trees till the snowy top, enjoy the fresh air and the charming views.

Amazing views of the city from up here

The mountain is an impressive and constant backdrop as you are moving around Sofia.

I would advise taking the 64 bus from outside the cinema near Vitosha metro station. They run every 20 minutes or so and will take you up the foothills to Boyansko Hanche. The church is uphill on the left from the bus stop and you then have a steep 400m walk up the road which runs past the back of the church to find the trailhead.

My plan was to visit the waterfall and then push on to the Kamen Del viewpoint at 1800m. But virgin mobile were not playing ball and so I was unable to access my roaming internet , so had to rely purely on the trail signs. Should have started with the green trail which would in retrospect have been the easier route. But saw the white sign waterfall route and followed that. Or tried to. More direct, and very, very steep. Needed to use my arms and hands... a lot. Gruelling, but worth it. The waterfall is impressive in lots of different places on the way up, which took a couple of hours.

Then got a little lost - due to virgin and to indistinct paths, but had a moment of serendipity by stumbling across a clearing just to the west of the waterfall which afforded a magnificent view of the whole of Sofia at a height of about 1400m.

We waited a couple of rainy days so that we can explore the mountains. On last Saturday when the sun came out we went up to a specific place called Momina Skala that was recommended by a collega of mine in Bulgaria. The place has a very nice and short hiking trails with a great view which leads to a local hut that serves drinks and food including alcohol and warm soups for cold weather
