A small Church of St Felix had been at this site in the 5th century, but when the Francision arrived in the 13th century, they built this Church and the Monastery dedicated to St Francis. While not richly endowed, the most significant church artwork is the Gothic Crucifix painting by Blaž Juraj of Trogir from the beginning of the 15th century. The church also contains the tombs of Marko Marulić and Ante Trumbić. The father of Croatian literature and Croatian politicians Ante Trumbić respectively.

We visited the Church of St. Frances in Split whilst on a one day stop in the city on a Tuesday in June. Arriving on a cruise ship, we had opted to explore the port on our own as we had previously visited here about three years ago.
The church is not large inside but with its whitewashed walls and wooden pews it had a sense of calm about it and gave a contrast with the busy and hot city outside. The interior is dimly lit by natural light but the altar is back lit by natural light and gives a good focal point to the church. It is our custom when visiting religious houses to light and candle in exchange for a donation and this facility was available here.

The Church and Monastery were built on an old early Christian site (the grave of St Felix).
The Church has a Gothic painting by Blaž Juraj of Trogir(15th century) and the sarcophagus depicting the Crossing over the Red sea.
The Franciscan monastery (next to the church) has an opulent library with over 3000 books.
The Church and the Monastery have tombs of prominent citizens of Split like the one of Marko Marulić (father of Croatian literature)
It is located on the Western part of the Riva.

It seems this is another building from around 300 BC. Used as church and monastery over the centuries, it is quite unobtrusive. However, its setting at the end of the waterfront and the flowers in front of it do make it attractive.

Chiesa semplice e se vogliamo anche abbastanza moderna, dopo il transetto a sinistra c’è una cappella dove potersi raccogliere in preghiera. Ho trovato invece bellissima la parte dedicata al monastero, con diverse iscrizioni antiche e manufatti in pietra ritrovati. Si esige silenzio assoluto.

We popped in here while enjoying all the sights in Split.
It is quite small and reading the sign on the harbour front near it , has been re-built a few times.
The modern stain glass windows contrast with the old early 15th century painted crucifix and tombstones of eminent people of Split are interesting to find out about. Worth a quick visit.

L’église St-François, avec son couvent, située sur le versant occidental du Quai, se dresse à l’emplacement d’un site paléochrétien, à proximité de la tombe et de la chapelle de saint Félix, martyr à l’époque de Dioclétien. Dès le 13e siècle, l’église est habitée par les Frères mineurs de saint François. Parmi les œuvres d’art, signalons le crucifix peint gothique, œuvre de Blaise de Trogir du début du 15e siècle et le sarcophage représentant le Passage de la Mer rouge, œuvre d’art religieux de l’époque romaine. A côté de l’église, le couvent des Franciscains avec son très beau cloître du 13e siècle, abrite une riche bibliothèque de plus de 3000 ouvrages dont certains remontes au 16e siècle. L’église et le couvent conservent les tombes et plaques tombales d’éminents Splitois, celle du père de la littérature croate Marko Marulić et le sarcophage (œuvre d’Ivan Meštrović) de l’un des plus grands hommes politique croate Ante Trumbić.

I would like to know at what time there is Sunday Mass in this Church and Monastery as I will be visiting this port on a cruise ship on the 15th of April, 2018.
