As every year, we spend the first two weeks of September on Kalamota/Kolocep. We love the island for being clean and quiet.
However, we also had unpleasant moments while swimming on the little nudist beach off VIlla Ruza. Small cruisers came directly to the beach and ankered there, with their engines running all the time (for cooling, cooking etc,), polluting air and water of this little precious bay. This is clearly forbidden, but the authorities seem not to care about.
The second annoying thing on this beach are all the illiterate tourists, just wandering around even if there is no path and way out, and it is clearly marked as nudist area. Maybe there should be signposts with symbols only instead of letters, so that also illiterates get it.
Yet another annoying thing on the island are the motorbikes and transports. Even if the island is car-free, with one small road only crossing the island, there are motorbikes and engines for transports that are still running on gasoline. while the hotels use mostly electric vehicles, the locals still run old, stinky engines. Just one old motorbike on the shall, narrow road stinks like hell.
Three things that we definitely do not like on Kalamota. But it still is a beautiful island.

Very short visit as part of a 3 island tour but the short time we had there we loved . The walking trails from where the boat docked provided stunning views of pristine coastline and blue caves . Was fun watching the swimmers diving off the rocks .

Kolocep Island was the second island that we visited on our Elaphiti Island tour. There were quite a few boats coming over from Dubrovnic and discharging hundreds of visitors, so the main port got quite crowded.
Apparently the population of the island remains quite low and this is a popular draw for those wanting a "get away from it all holiday".

We were a group who hired a boat for an afternoon and it brought us here - it's about 30 minutes from Dubrovnik but in some respects feels a world away!
The island is relatively small but has everything you need for a day / few days. The dock is small and near to it is a small corner shop, some public toilets and then a little further along, a sandy beach in front of a hotel. Keep walking for another 10-15 minutes and you can go around the corner to a rockier beach that's slightly quieter. There are some paths around the island if you want to do some walking - best to get a map if possible.
If you want an escape from the hustle and bustle of Dubrovnik, this is definitely worth the trip!

We were staying in Babin Kuk and caught the ferry out to Kolocep. 8 euros return which is great value. It's a beautiful island but there is not a lot there. Quite a few walking trails are signposted at the start but nothing I've you're on then. I would recommend getting a map before you go if possible. There are a couple of stalls set up selling local produce, one near to the ferry, another further round the island. Bought some local sweets there. There's a couple of bars and a small shop near the ferry port also. We walked down to a couple of the little beaches / bays. Beautiful clear water to swim in, it's very pebbly and slippy though so I would recommend sea shoes if you're planning on going in. We had a nice day and I would recommend but do try and pick up a map first - it would have greatly improved our visit I think.

We decided to avoid the organised trips and get the ferry from Dubrovnik (Gruz) it was only around 30 minutes trip. Then we explored by foot following the little roads and found some beautiful beaches.

What can I say about Koločep and Kalamota Island except that it was absolutely incredible? Myself and my mum booked an all-inclusive holiday to Rhodes with the intention to have an opportunity to relax and enjoy ourselves - obviously considering recent events Rhodes was out of the question, so we booked last-minute here instead, which was maybe the best turn of luck we could have ever had! Everything, from the flight to the transfer at the airport to the hotel, staff, facilities, and food and drink has been just exceptional at every turn, making for one of the best holidays either of us have had in years. The views you will wake up to every morning are something you won’t forget in a hurry - gorgeous ocean and mountainscapes literally in your doorstep! - and the weather was absolutely gorgeous for the week we were here. Special mention has to go to the staff, who went above and beyond to provide a great experience for us and were clearly incredibly passionate about the work they were doing - shout out to Emma, Coline, Martin, and the wonderful food and beverages manager whose name escapes me (sorry)!!
Regarding the food - we’re baffled as to where the spate of bad reviews of it have come from? Yeah, you’re not going to get stereotypical English food, but isn’t that what you want from a *foreign* holiday - to enjoy and appreciate the cuisine of the country in which you’re staying? For us, everything was clean and hygienic - no flies on the food, electric fly traps above all the food stations, and no issues with things not being hot/cold as desired. There was a lovely variety of meats, fish, sides, and salads, as well as a grill area where you’re able to have certain things cooked to order - eggs in the morning, pasta for lunch, etc. As adventurous eaters, we were stunned by the great spread of obviously fresh-caught fish (the perks of being on an island!), even seeing shark in there at one point! The vegetarian/vegan section could definitely be expanded, but we had spoken to a staff member who told us about their plans to improve on this in the future so they are aware. The deserts were incredible, shout out to whoever their desert chef is!
There was a sizeable drinks menu, and we enjoyed all of the wines and cocktails on offer (maybe a bit too much)! The pool was clean, never busy, and really temperate; similarly, we never had an issue finding a sun bed or somewhere to lay down during the day. The spa and massage services were *incredible* - the gym was a little small and sparse, and only really functional for one or two people to use at a time (as a bit of a gym girlie I was a bit disappointed there was no bench/slightly better selection of free weights) but completely appreciate that is not 99% of customers’ priority when coming on holiday. We really enjoyed our stint at the nice fancy restaurant down the road, and once again had some superb service from the staff that worked there.
If we had to gripe about anything, the only complaints we had were that the poolside toilets were a little dirty on occasion (we preferred to use the ones beside the restaurant) and - this one is really small and silly - there was a song that played on a loop in the restaurant that we got a bit sick of by the end of the week!
Overall, this was an absolutely cracking holiday, and we can’t recommend both this location and Croatia enough. Thanks to everyone who put us up, we’re already saving up for next year!

Is there any medical facilities on the island??

Hi, we definitely passed a sign for an Ambulance Station whilst out walking - although we didn’t actually see it - so I imagine there must be somewhere to take the patient, although I imagine it would be pretty basic?

Yes the ferries run daily. The first to leave the island is 6.45am to Dubrovnik and the last one back is 8pm from the Old Harbour Dubrovnik to Koločep.

Hi
We are staying on the Island in a couple of weeks - do you remember what times the ferries run between - if we go to the mainland for the day what time is the last ferry back to the island?
Thanks

The public ferry runs 4 times a day - mainly to suit the locals commuting - the last one returns at about 8 arriving about 8.30. The hotel runs a separate boat (subject to interest) and that has one coming back much later - I think about 11 to Midnight. Between the two services you should be able to cover most of your needs.
I hope that you enjoy your stay - we had a wonderful holiday.

Hi,
is there a grocery store on the island Kolocep? Booked an apartment from the island and was wondering if there's a need for grocery shopping on the mainland before getting on the ferry.
Or does anyone know if there are boat taxis going between Dubrovnik and Kolocep? Many thanks! :)

There is grocery shop with very limited merchandise, and short working hours. Ferry is going to the mainland 4 times a day, there is also water taxis but they are very pricey.

Both, Kolocep and Lopud have small beaches in their harbour bays. Lopud has another beach on its Southern coast. Both islands are very quiet in terms of bars/restaurants. You might be better off staying in Dubrovnik and make day-trips to these islands to visit the beaches. They have direct ferries several times each day from DBV-Gruz.

Is there a nudist beach on Kolocep?
RJandJBW
น็อตติงแฮม, UK214 ผลงาน
Hi, yes there is an area for nudist bathing and sunbathing. No facilities apart from steps to enter and leave the water. As stated by others it is not a beach and beach shoes should be warn to prevent stepping on anomies if not using the 1 set of steps (near the entry point).
There are warning about the area on the footpath and only one (we found) entry and exit point.
Hotel staff use the area, and tourist boats cruise about 50m off shore!
The water is clear and nice and deep, well worth stripping off for.
