Very interesting and quite unique 'tower' is part of the old defense system of the city.
It's really thick so the term tower is a bit overstreched.

The "Thick Tower" as it is called if you translate from Romanian is just a few 10th of meters away from the Carpenters tower but these 2 towers were part of 2 different defensive rings.
The Thick Tower is much bigger than any of the other towers of the former fortress surrounding Sibiu and today is sort of built into the building housing the Philharmonics of Sibiu.
Visiting except for the concerts - I recon is out of the question - although I never raised the question.
It is interesting - but is very easy to pass by it due to its totally different shape and is not as interesting as the Potter, Carpenters or Harquebusier towers of the former defensive rings of the city.
Nonetheless you can stop for a pic - it is a genuine landmark of the city.

Ova kula je najniža i "najdeblja" od svih očuvanih gradskih kula i nalazi se malo izvan gradskih zidina. Najverovatnije je služila kao barbakana za zaštitu gradskih bedema. Ima izuzetno debele zidove. Danas je u njoj sala filharmonije i služi za muzičko-scenske svečanosti. Glavni ulaz je sa druge strane gde joj je pridodat još zgrada u 19. veku. Interesantna stuktura i prikladna namena.

Visitamos el pueblo de Sibiu, que es muy bonito y nos acercamos a ver la Turnul Gros. Es una torre muy gorda y en mi opinión no tiene nada más destacable.

This tower of the outer city walls is used for exhibitions and is situated by the coach park for Hermannstadt. It is also adjeacent to the building where concerts of the Hermannstadt city philharmonic orchestra take place.

The Thick Tower is not located in the most beautiful area of the city and is attractive only because of its shape.
Being restored recently, it hosts inside a theatre, accesible from the Cetatii Street.
The area around it is not that nice and a way to get back to the Cetatii Street is through a stairs passage, which is very dirty and smelly.

We dropped into Thalia house, the home of the filamonica orchestra to purchase
tickets to a performance, on exiting we continued our walk along the walls of the city
you cant but help noticing this rather large/fat tower. On further inspection we noticed it backs onto, the more modern Thalia house. During renovations in 2004 both buildings we joined/coupled together, which is now the home of the philomonica orchestra. definitely worth a look.
