This was our second Engaging Cultures experience with the first being in Jordan for a couple of weeks. This time around is was Tunisia for a week. Aicha was our guide and Lassad was our driver for the whole trip. They were with us from when we came into the arrivals hall at the airport until we lost sight of them going past security at the airport for the flight home.

Aicha clearly has a great deal of experience and knowledge and we were the beneficiaries of that during our time in Tunisia. Whether it was walking through a Medina, Roman sites, or museums, she always added the extra details and texture to the experience. She was warm, kind and professional and took the time to answer our questions. She quickly learned of my wife's love of desserts and introduced her to quite a few Tunisian treats while we were there. Lassad was also very kind and a good driver. We felt very lucky and thankful for both of them.

One of the highlights of the trip was dinner with Madam Rabba at her home which was similar to our experience doing something similar in Jordan. If you are looking for a well organized, authentic cooking experience with a wonderful, patient host who clearly enjoys cooking and sharing that love of cooking (and of life) with others, Rabba would be a great choice.

Overall, we continue to recommend Engaging Cultures to our friends and family whenever they're visiting any country where they operate. It makes for a great experience to spend time with the same team throughout the trip, have all the activities planned out, incorporate changes if you want to while you're there, vetted hotels at the ready, and strong recommendations for places to eat and hang out.

I booked a solo trip to Tunisia in late October-early November of 2022. I was already abroad and booked on the fly, and Jonathan of Engaging Cultures did a fantastic job of communicating with me and working to organize a trip at short notice. The team he put together for me, Aicha, the guide, and Lassard, the driver, was fantastic. Aicha, in particular, was not only fun and caring but astonishingly well informed, able to answer questions about everything from the Phoenicians to olive exports. Before coming to Tunisia, I had spent almost two months solo (my preferred way to travel) in Europe, but Tunisia is a country that would have been very difficult to navigate, and enjoy, without a guide and driver. The eight-day tour included a number if ancient sites, which was great, highlighted by the coliseum in El Jem -- like Rome without the crowds and guards. All in all, Engaging Cultures did an outstanding job from pre-planning to dropping me off at the airport, and it was also less expensive than any of the other solo options I looked at.

Engaging Cultures was so easy to work with from start to finish. In fact, I had such a good experience with my Tunisia tours, I'm now working with them for Egypt.

Basically, I requested a custom tour for my friend and myself over two days while we were working. This was not my first time in Tunisia, but it was for my friend, so we booked one day of places I already visited and one of some new experiences. When the Tunisian president announced a national holiday that may have disrupted our work plans, Engaging Cultures was very accommodating to the possibility of a last-minute change. (Fortunately it was not ultimately needed.)

Our actual tour guide was Mohamed and our driver was Fahri. They were amazing, On my next visit to Tunisia, I will request them.

Mohamed has so much experience as a tour guide, and it just added so much to the stories he had to tell. And even though I had visited before, I didn't use a tour guide, and I realized how much I missed out on by not taking advantage of the wealth of knowledge that a good guide can bring. I learned so much!

Our first day tour started near the Tunis Medina where we walked for a while before heading out to La Goulette for an authentic Tunisian lunch. After lunch, we visited Sidi Bou Said and Carthage. We were tired, but in a really good way at the end of the day.

On the second day, we headed out to El Jem and Sousse for the day. I highly recommend making it out to El Jem if you can - Mohamed really made it come to life. As we were driving out there, we passed many olive groves, some of which were being harvested. I commented that I had never seen an olive tree before and I love olives. Mohamed and Fahri pulled over at one point and asked the harvesters if we could see what they do close up. We even got to try our hand at harvesting the olives (which we were both terrible at!), and it is something that just made our tour that little bit special.

My friend also realized that she miscounted her medication, and Mohamed helped her to navigate the pharmacy to see if she could get extra pills to cover our full visit. This was actually one thing that we really appreciated was being able to relax and allow Mohamed and Fahri to do the cognitive work of navigating the language and culture for us as it was really exhausting to do it each day for work.

I really can't say enough nice things about the Engaging Cultures Team: Jonathan, Mohamed, and Fahri were all fantastic.

This was by far my favorite excursion. So rich in culture and history, we were taken into the homes of these villagers. We ate fresh bread made in there outside ovens dipped in olive oil made by them locally and there mini olives were so tasty !! We also got to rugs and clothing made by them. It was a very humbling experience and well worth the almost 3 hours drive. Beautiful views from atop, bring your running shoes.

Jonathan at Engaging put together an excellent 10 day custom tour of Tunisia over Christmas 2019. The tour was fit together to allow us to fit in a trip to the Sahara festival in Douz which was awesome. Our guide Tarek was fantastic and made a good holiday great. He had homework to read while we commuted between cities, stopped everywhere and anywhere if he though we would find it interesting, stopped at almost every market for us after seeing my wife loves markets, and kept us so stocked up on Mandarins that we almost turned orange. I cannot recommend Tarek enough his services were the highlight of the holiday!!

Second time travelling with Engaging Cultures, and it was as awesome experience as before. We travelled as a family of 3 persons (2 adults and a teenager daughter) and our trip began from Monastir, where Mohamed and our driver picked us up from our hotel. First we visited the Berber village of Takrouna. We heard about the history of the place, watched the beautiful landscape and enjoyed a good cup of coffee and home-made lemon juice in a peaceful little cafe run by Aida Gmach Bellaghan whom we met also. Our journey continued to Zaghouan where we saw the ruins of the Water Temple. We also drove up to the mountains and took a walk there and breathed the fresh mountain air and enjoyed the beauty of the nature and the scenery. We had a tasty lunch in a restaurant and after that we continued towards Oudhna to see some more ruins of the Roman time city Uthina. Compared to El Jem the Coliseum is not as big but you get the picture and the environment and the scenery was very beautiful and peaceful, you could see herds of lambs walking etc. Not too many visitors there, it is really a place to see out of the beaten path. After that we explored the huge aqueduct that provided fresh water to Cartahage and Tunis for about 16 centuries. Then we were driven to our hotel in Tunis. We had an awesome day and our guide Mohamed was excellent and his humor and knowledge added so much to our journey. The driver was very good, he drove in a safe and calm manner and was very kind to our daughter. We would surely travel with Engaging Cultures again!

We stumbled upon Engaging Culture Travel here on Tripadvisor 6 months before our planned trip, and started liaising with Austin then. He was extremely patient and responsive, and came back with an itinerary and other suggestions/items to watch out that we needed to consider for the trip. We were able to give him feedback on what we wanted, and Austin adjusted the itinerary after many iterations. Payment was very straightforward. He remained in contact with us as we were counting down to the start of the trip, and also DURING our stay there, over email. He also followed up after we came home to ask us for feedback. They are able to accommodate non-seasoned travellers who do not know what to expect when they visit a somewhat "exotic" country, as well as seasoned travellers who pretty much know what they want to experience. Excellent service!

The best part of the trip is the local experience. We were fortunate to have Aicha, a well-experienced guide with over 30 years of experience, look after us over our 8-day trip. She and the driver are genuine, very funny and treated us as friends. We had great conversations in the car on the road, as well as over lunches and dinners. Aicha is a wealth of information and we learnt a lot about the country and Tunisian people over the 8 days.

There were very few foreign visitors throughout the trip. Dougga and Sbeitla are definitely underrated and are must-sees ! To make the best of your trip, ask for the local experience (e.g. lablabi for breakfast for locals, as well as opportunities to wander into the local markets/medinas). Side note: French is the most typical second language of Tunisians (sometimes even menus in restaurants are only in Arabic and French), so if you manage to speak a little French, you would likely get the most out of your trip.

Tunisia is such a beautiful country with diversified landscapes and rich cultural heritage sites. We just hope that more visitors will come !

over 8 days (end Nov to early Dec), we travelled with Aicha & Lassaad from Tunis, down across an ancient land. we saw magnificent ruins of civilisations past, we touched sand, rocky deserts and inhaled the scents of a culture far away from our home in Malaysia.

Our great leader Aicha connected us to our surroundings in a way not unlike the berber elders of old, in stories to catch your breath, and warm the soul. Lassaad drove us with a steady hand, a wry smile on his lips and a sense of humour that crosses cultures like nothing else can!

Engaging Cultures did a splendid job bringing everything together as we desired. we engaged with Jonathan over several weeks to pull this off, and it was time well spent.

our route took in Tunis, Tozeur, Dous, the salt lakes, the Barber village in Chenini, Kairoaun, Sufetula, El Jem and miles and miles of the Sahara...

Highlights: Sufetula's grandeur and expanse was exceptional, given its distance from Rome, and its Punic and Byzantine layers; the berber village of Chenini on the way to tataouine was a joy, and the morning wander around the hills was simply splendid; Kairouan's centre of learning added to our list of Coimbra, Fez, Alhambra... only Ummayyad in Damascus remains.. and then there was The medinas... several, all with their own character and narrow alleys of antiquity. The Bardo Museum in Tunis just simply can't be left un-mentioned... incredible mosaics in a Moorish Palace.

the main highlight however, is the Sahara, in all its different shades, shapes, and terrain. a place like no other on our planet, and if you were unable to appreciate the scale of nothingness here, you should leave earth. as ecologists, this was our dream come true, and the reason we came to Tunisia.

one weakness: the tour we planned had one failure - the trip from Ksar Ghilane to the Zmela camp for the night was a total waste of time, and this should have been picked up somewhere during our planning. we arrived at dusk, and left soon after an early breakfast. The oasis itself sits at the edge of the desert sands, and there was no reason for the 45min 4WD trip (and back again) to another camp also at the edge of the sands... no reason at all!

otherwise, a trip well spent, a company met which is clearly a step above most in Tunisia, and a guide who simply touched our hearts, and made a little space there for this lovely nation of Tunisia.

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a thorough review of your Tunisia tour! It's so great to hear you enjoyed your tour and there were so many highlights! I will be sure to pass along your kind comments to Aicha and Laasad. We apologize for the planning regarding your stay at the Zmela camp. We should have made sure to have gotten you there earlier so you could enjoy time around the beautiful dunes while the sun was actually up. Thank you for leaving a note about that, and we will make sure it will go better for our future travelers. We appreciate hearing about your passion for travel in the region, and wish you all the best as you explore it more! Travel deeper, Austin

After working for a week in Tunis, I took a 3 day, 3 night tour of Southern Tunisia including Sbeitla, Tozeur, Dous, Matmata, and El Jem. My guide, Tarek, made several suggestions for stops along the way including Berber villages, oasis exploration, and the salt lake. Tarek's knowledge about the culture and history of Tunisia helped put everything we saw into context. I planned the itinerary with Jonathan and Austin checked in a few times during our trip to make sure everything was going well. Tarek and Jamel (our driver) made sure I felt comfortable the whole time. As a solo female traveler, it was important to me to have a company that was organized and responsive. I was not disappointed.

I see that I neglected to put a review here from last year. Engaging Cultures was our choice for about 10 days in Tunisia. I can't say enough good things about our experience. There were 3 of us, my wife and myself in our 80's and our adult daughter. Treated very nicely by Muhamed and our driver. My wife's memory is going bad and they kept her in sight at all critical times. Took the pressure off me for sure. It's important to me that any travel itinerary be flexible and not cast in concrete; that was very well appreciated. Changes made when a reasonable suggestion was discussed like adults We'd recommend Engaging Cultures without hesitation.
