Through our travel agent in the Netherlands we booked this trip. We also rented a full diving equipment. The booking of the boat and rental of the diving equipment is done via separate companies but in the end it turns out that all separate companies are part of 1 big holding. And this is the trick, especially when you have complaints because then you are left in the darkness...

The staff of the boat was absolutely great, very friendly, helpfull and service minded. Food was also good. By the end of the trip the soft drinks were mostely gone, so either they bought to little stock or the people on the boat drank more then anticipated. The upperdeck cabins are nice as you get to enjoy the fresh air this in contradiction with the cabins located beneath the deck. So if possible make sure to get a cabin on the upper deck.

The diving equipment was delivered on the boat by a friendly but unexperienced guy who had absolutely no clue what he was talking about. It was just a messenger. We did rent a full diving equipment (masks, suits, fins, boots, bcd, gloves, lights etc) but we did not get the masks and gloves as this is apparently not standard diving equipment. Even the fact that we had proof in writing of all the gear we had rented and paid for, we were told that the masks , gloves and lights were not part of the diving equipement. The state of the divining equipment was really really bad. The glasses which came on board later after we indicated we did need them, were covered with mould. We were lucky that one of the dive masters had spare masks which we could use.

Unfortunately I lost my weight belt during one of the dives and I was told that it need to be reimbursed. Of course no problem. However we were charge $150 for the belt and 5 weights....this is a total rip off. We told the captain, only a messenger in this situation, that we did not agree to this. Someone of the rental company would be waiting for us that same evening. However we never saw or met any one of the rental company. Later on we were charged for $ 250 to reimburse the lost weight bellt. Small detail: the weights are owned by the boat and the belt is part of the diving equipment so owned by the company who rented us the equipement. I believe this company is called Galextour.

As for the dive masters we had a good and a less good one. Even though she claimed to have a 10 year experience, she did not show it. The dives were uncoordinated, going up and down from deep to less deep and back to deep again. Given the circumstances at some sites this can lead to dangerous situations. Also she was paying more attention to her Go Pro then to her group. The dive masters apparently are employed by yet another company, all part of the bigger holding.

Thankfully we met with a bunch of nice fellow divers on the boat and the diving was beautiful. So all in all we did have a good time, but some disappointment is still left. As indicated before you just don't know where to turn to in case of the issues we had which is very convenient for them enabling to continue their (shady) business.

This boat was booked by my travel agent, who hadn't used the boat before - it was my first liveaboard as well, so I admittedly have nothing to compare it to, but here goes: The boat itself was fine, the food was fine, the staff ie the kitchen and serving staff, the cleaning staff, were all wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. I have two major complaints - I, together with my roomie, were put into the room at the front of the boat which adjoined to the anchor room so it was incredibly noisy dropping anchor at 3am. The room also had a nasty, dank odour that would not dissipate even when we left the door open. It wasn't just wet clothes - it was a horrid smell that permeated everything. We, in the dungeons, paid the exact same price as those people who had doors that opened to the fresh air/breeze and weren't attached to the noisy anchor. Try avoid this room! I ended up sleeping in the lounge or upper deck benches to get fresh air. Second complaint, and more important, was the lackadaisical attitude that one of the dive masters had during the dive. She was inattentive, had no dive plan, dove erratically, had no idea where the group was. She dove like a yoyo with no regard to safety, in my opinion. In fact, on one of our last dives, where she had 7 people in her group - 5 of us did not see her for 39 minutes of a 43 minute dive. To me, that's unacceptable. Safety first. The other dive master (they alternated btwn groups each day) was completely the opposite. He knew exactly where his group was and was always close on hand. The diving is magnificent, of course, but was somewhat soured by that dive leader. The other divers on the boat, 15 of us altogether, were a great bunch of people and made the trip fun. We were able to laugh together when we referred to the dive masters love affair with her GoPro! Oh, and the compressor broke down twice - first time, they replaced with a refurbished compressor which then also broke and they fixed it by McGyvering bits together. We did lose out on a dive, and seeing marine iguanas feeding bcs of timing. We did have to receive an airfill from another boat which was luckily moored close to us at one of the far islands. (We did get a $20 discount on the nitrox fee.)

We booked the Astrea last-minute May 2017 while in Puerto Ayora for a six-day cruise. Due to the sudden breakdown of another boat originally booked by a group of 12 friends, the Astrea was picked as replacement. Since the Astrea hosts 16 beds, four spots were idle that my friends and I conveniently filled last-minute. Due to this replacement, our itinerary (not a diving one) and crew at that time are not really representative for the Astrea. That is why I will only be commenting on the boat itself, as that will be the only known variable in the Astrea equation. Note, however, that the (special) itinerary and (temporary?) crew/guide were outstanding and we would love to have them back.

Overall, I must say we are pretty happy with the Astrea cruise. The boat really delivered to its mid-range status.

The 8 cabins are small, but appear renovated and come with comfortable beds and own bathrooms (incl. hot water). Unlike some budget and other mid-range cruises, we did not pick up any fuel fumes in our cabins near the engine. However, the anchor is quite rusty and makes an insane amount of noise when let down for circa 5 minutes. The two nights we sailed, I understood almost everyone woke up to this. As one can expect from a boat normally geared towards diving, the snorkelling gear and other equipment was plentiful and relatively new. Don't expect luxurious sunbathing/chillout upper decks. The upper deck has a built-in bench in the front that can sit six people, whereas in the back there's two wide benches that can sit everyone. The food tasted decent, but was not always plentiful. Perhaps that is what you can expect from a mid-range boat, but after a day full of activities, I usually find myself extremely hungry and the three-course meals simply did not suffice. Lastly, the inside social area is limited to a lounge room with a c-shaped sofa next to the dining area. Not super cosy, but it does the trick.

To end, we believe the Astrea certainly is a decent mid-range option one should seriously consider. When picking a cruise, just keep in mind that "you get what you pay for" does not hold more true than in Galapagos. Cheaper is rarely better.

I stayed on this live-a-board during my recent visit to the Galapagos(July 12 - 19). The Astrea is not a luxury cruise, but an affordable very comfortable live-a-aboard with an exceptional cook, outstanding crew, and awesome guides.
Just to name a few of the events experienced, we dove with whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, galapagos sharks, mola mola, orca whales, dolphins, and playful sealions.
If you are looking for an affordable diving experience in the Galapagos then book a week on the Astrea. Everything a diver needs to enjoy diving the Galapagos you will find on the Astrea.
I booked my Astrea tour through Dive the Galapgos. They were awesome in setting everything up including flights from Guayaquil to Baltra. I highly recommend booking your Galapagos trip on board the Astrea.
