Pattumallay Tea Factory is open to visitors and allow us to see and learn the various aspects of tea making. The main attraction is that they are still using the traditional equipment and machinery and they are following the ancient process to make tea dust. The factory was established during the British era and is maintained properly. The staff will explain to us the various aspects of tea making and for students it is really informative. I have been to the factory several times and this is one of the few factories which has not closed the operations. The factory is worth a visit to learn about the traditional method of tea processing.

Our visit at pattumalay tea factory was quite accidental actually. We had planned a factory visit in Munnar bt due to Oct 2 national holiday it was closed. Alas how lucky we were. We visited here on our way 2 allepey 4m thekkady n d moment we left NH for factory the scenery was quite amazing. Thru narrow road b/w tea plantations we reached d old heritage style factory. The most attractive part of the visit is d same orthodox style of tea making by d pre independence era installed British machineries. We were lucky dat no one else was dere dat tym n so d manager took us thru all the steps of tea making one by one wid enthusiasm giving us ample time n first hand experience of tea making. Being an engineer for me d most enthralling part was d old British machines used perfectly even by 60 odd years n so d old heritage style tea crushing process was still maintained. In other factories newer methods r used to increase productivity thus compromising on tea quality. The pattumalay tea factory had really made our kerela visit an never forgettable experience !

This is one of the great tea factory that uses orthodox British tea manufacturing process.
It still has old British era machines running.
It does cost but one will be able to see entire process of tea manufacturing from start to finish.
It’s has got great backdrop of tea garden where one can get good pictures.
It's an orthodox tea manufacturing factory. We were taken inside the factory for a briefing on various processes involved in the manufacturing of tea. A supervisory staff explained to us each process by various machines in the factory. Also the benefits of green tea was well explained. On sale were various types of freshly processed tea at the sales counter of the factory. The tourists/visitors are taken in batches of 15 to 20 individuals.

The Pattumalay tea factory is on the way towards Allepey from Thekkady. The tea factory visit is a bit expensive at INR 150 per head. There are many variants of the tea at the booking counter which one can enjoy. The best part of this place is the backdrop of the lush green tea plantations which provide the perfect setting for some great photographs.

This most interesting visit to the tea plantation and factory was only spoilt by the fact that we could not actually hear what the plantation worker was trying to explain about the process of picking and drying tea! A smaller group might have helped, perhaps.
Still, I shall never be able to look at my cup of tea in the same way ever again!

So you pay 300rs and feel disappointed at the end. What's good? Seeing first hand most stages of the process and sensing the smells and atmosphere of this amazing place. What's disappointing? The very nice guide was inaudible to almost everyone in this noisy environment, there was no allowing for photography even though she allowed people to do so despite signs, there was no mention of the beautiful tea crop growing right outside and how it was managed. I felt the whole thing was rushed so that she could get us to the tea sales counter. There wasn't even the opportunity it seemed to me to taste these marvellous teas. I am sure other tea factories will do it better. Loved the site and smells though and the marvellous still working old machines! Male toilet was dark and awash too.
