It seems to be something is not right with it's management. They issued us ticket for Entry and Bus - once you reach inside, immediately ranger told today there is no tickets available and you go back. Then why they had sent us inside - just to earn IRS 65 per person and waste time!!! I show some lady was issued ticket who was much behind in line!! No it was not ON LINE BOOKING with her - ranger took her personally to ticket counter and issued tickets. For me it was really a Scam of some short of!!!!! Better to avoid Thekkdy Visit at all as only attraction is not available then you are really losing on your money. And let me assure you with me there are more then 100 people suffered same way. It's SHAME to management!!!!!!

We enjoyed the walk, the brief bamboo raft crossing of the river and it was beautiful as the mist lifted. But the guide told us that the animals leave at the first sign of the sun and so it turned out to be. Birds galore by little else except some boars and the ubiquitous monkeys and deer. If you remember that, you'll have a great time

Early-ish on the morning of the 15th of Feb, I set out with my guide on a solo 'Green Walk'. I chose to go solo because although it cost me more (1600 rupees plus the entrance fee) I had been ill for a week and was concerned that I might not be strong enough for the 2.5 hour 'trek'. As it turned out, the trek was more of a good walk - a few inclines but mostly well navigated territory on well-trodden paths. The luxury of it just being 2 of us though, was priceless. There were a few other groups heading off at the same time but my guide - Pragash - was eager to get ahead of the pack - as was I. But we still had time to stop and enjoy the stunning early morning scenery and the quite stillness of the natural world as it wakes up. In the first 90 minutes or so we saw plenty of different bird species, clumps of wild boar, giant squirrels, some monkeys and a heart opening variety of spectacular trees. I was feeling replenished and deeply satisfied. And then we rounded a corner and there ahead of us were 3 elephants - a matriarch and 2 young ones. I come from Africa and have spent much time enjoying the company of African elephants - sometimes in herds of many hundreds - but these 3 gentle, quiet grazing Indian elephants really touched me deeply. I could have stayed watching them forever. They were aware of us but 'not bovvered' at all. Reluctantly, we had to head back and en route, a way above us through the trees, passed a small herd of Indian Guar - bison/buffalo, quietly going about their day. What a treat. Really, even if you see no animals at all, you can connect with the pulse of wild, original India just by standing quietly on this sweet ground, so go people, just do it.

I did the border trekking in Periyar Tiger Reserve mid-Feb 2023 and loved it! We were lucky and saw six elephants! Five in a group with a baby and then we saw a solo male later on. The guides make sure to keep distance and we felt safe the whole time. We also saw samba deer, two species of monkey, wild boar, lots of birds and butterflies. The scenery on the border looking over both Kerala and Tamil Nadu is beautiful.
Some helpful notes (because info online is lacking):
- I booked the trekking the evening before (around 5pm) from the ecotourism office at Ambadi Junction in Thekkady. Cost is 2000rupees (excludes 500Rs fee for park entrance - paid on the day of the trekking).
- I booked the border hike that leaves from the forest checkpoint as I was told this one is best & goes deeper into the reserve.
- They do not supply you with a rucksack so bring your own backpack (neutral colours). They gave us a shopping back with our food inside. It was a substantial amount I thought - 2x bananas, 1x mandarin, 1x apple, small sandwich, vegetable curry & a large rice.
- They supply you with 1L of bottled water but you should take an additional litre.
- No leeches in the dry season! So leech socks weren’t necessary.
- I wouldn’t characterise it as ‘hard’ trekking. There are short stints of uphill but lots of breaks. If you can handle a standard bushwalk you’ll be fine.
- Sneakers and vans were fine to wear for those in my group. Maybe in the rainy season you’ll need shoes with more grip.

The Periyar park area is absolutely beautiful, and the guides are very passionate and knowledgeable. However, there’s a few things that you should be aware of before you head into the park! There are monkeys, giant squirrel, so many stunning birds and plenty of deer. We did see tiger tracks and dung and fresh elephant dung too.
On my first day I did the full day bamboo rafting. Firstly there was very little info from the guides as to how the day was structured. And actually we only spent about 30 minutes on the bamboo raft and my smart watch logged almost 20km walking! So it’s not quite the package they sell you so be prepared to mostly walk. And eat before you go - breakfast doesn’t actually happen until 10am when you’ve walked about 7km.
The second day I took the Border hiking - the scenery was stunning and I had a beautiful day. You know what to expect with this as it as as sold around 15km hiking.
On both days they provide food - take a rucksack big enough for a large tiffin containing your food, which also weighs a tonne! Can be very uncomfortable to carry if you don’t bring the right bag. But the food was tasty and filling.
Overall, much clearer information is needed on the structure of each activity package. And the guides need to be ready to head into the park with groups on time - both days we set off almost an hour late. This actually means the wildlife has largely moved away from the areas you are walking. From what I heard the best wildlife sightings are early morning and the park are charging a lot of money to take tourists in far too late. Of course with nature there’s never a guarantee and every day is different but I think they could maximise chances of wildlife sightings by making these tours earlier. If you can get a place on the overnight camps maybe your chances are higher of seeing animals. Also more people seemed to see elephants from the short big boat trips rather than on foot or on the longer treks.
I do worry that the number of people walking through certain areas of the park during the day is causing wildlife to avoid these areas as they feel threatened by human presence. I think more needs to be done to balance tourism in the park with ensuring the animals don’t feel pushed away from certain areas of their habitat by people on foot. I loved my time in the park with the beautiful wildlife and the scenery but I think the guides are possibly more focused on scenery than actually tracking animals and that conservation is not a high enough priority.

We did the bamboo rafting and trekking (full day) and the border hiking trek, both was a good experience. For border hiking it is a not difficult 18 km trek (despite it is call hard trek) if you walk regularly it is feasible: there is a lot of break. Landscape are spectacular and we saw a lot of animal. For bamboo rafting trek part is nice but bamboo rafting do not have specific interest (we are on middle of Lake without anything special to see).
National Park speak few word of English so do no expect detail explanation.
Food is not exceptional but we do not come for that.
Booking on reserve website is not possible without indian credit card.

We took the full day trekking and rafting. Raj our guide was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and gave us a fantastic day. He pointed out so many birds, plants and animals. We saw tiger marks on a tree, and we were very lucky to see three elephants. We saw them from the raft and then Raj found them again for us on land. We also saw many monkeys, deer, bison, snakes, boar and lots of birds. The reserve is very beautiful. A great day.
Lunch is provided in a tiffin tin with rucksack. it’s a good idea to take your own spoon.
There are different tours available, including boat trips on the lake. Only a small part of the park is open to tourists, the rest is preserved. It is well worth supporting.
There is a nice bar in the hotel at the boat landing.
The park is quite hard to contact by email and could not take international credit cards on the website. Best to visit the office in Kumily to book and pay. Your hotel may be able to contact them in advance. Tours start early in the morning at the park bus station in Kumily.

Hello.
I wanted to book Periyar before we arrived online. I have tried to use the website to book a trek & the boat, but none of my UK credit or debit cards will work for the online payment. I have tried amex, MasterCard and Visa cards. Does anyone know if you can book online without an Indian card? Can anyone help me on how we might book? There are only 10 spots left on the boat we want so wanted to get booked in.
Thank you,
Lauren

We booked our tickets after reaching the parking place where we had to park our vehicle. There was a ticket booking office where we did the booking.
I think contacting KTDC is the best way to go forward.

They have 2 trips one starts at 0730 so you need to get in there 30 minutes before and can buy the tickets from inside. They will ask you to fill the form with details of the people taking ride. Second ride starts after 2 hours. Its better to take ticket from inside rather than online and do the ride in the morning
