My husband and I were welcomed with a delicious Kue while Purnama was setting up everything for the workshop and Zoom connection with Vaughan.
The Zoom call was very informative and Purnama demonstrated every instrument with great skill and feeling.
I absolutely loved to start with trying to play the Selonding and could have continued for hours if there weren’t so many other gamelan instruments to explore.
I received a CD and lots of information through email so when you feel overwhelmed there is much to enjoy and refer back to.
The Zoom call was very informative and Purnama demonstrated every instrument with great skill and feeling.

We were welcomed into this family home and music/dance studio with typical Balinese hospitality. We had a lesson on the history of Balinese dance and then a wonderful lesson. As a dance teacher, I was so impressed with the ability of our teacher to help us to experience Balinese dance. She was really talented. Then we had some tea and snacks and a lesson on Balinese musical instruments. Once again the lesson was fascinating the music teacher was very good. He helped us to make music on some rather challenging instruments. I would recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about the wonderful world of Balinese music and dance.

This was a truly magical and extraordinary experience!!! The dance teacher was marvelous with all three of us......guiding, helping, encouraaing and so positive. She herself is an expert dancer and modeled everything exquisitely for us. She knew just how to break everything down so that both male and female guests had a wonderful lesson and time. We ALL succeeded!! As a dance teacher myself, I know something of what it takes to deliver a class at this level. Rarely have I seen better.
We were served a gracious tea with snack in between dance and music lessons, and it was then that I realized the beautiful sarong I had been given to wear during the class was an actual gift--a freebie but not just any batik but a high quality cotton one in the traditional style. OMG. The music lesson included demonstrations, many chances to play individually and in a group--trying out all kinds of instruments while being gently and sweetly coached by the young and oh-so-expert Balinese gamelan teacher. I'm not sure which wowed me more: the music and dance lessons or the utterly charming, warm and kind manner of these Balinese teachers. Added bonuses: a clean and well-managed Western style bathroom, an air-conditioned facilty and a beautiful setting. Tip these people generously because they are very special.

Wow, what a complete review, and you even mentioned our bathroom!
We really love it when our students are so satisfied because we always make the utmost effort to included those personal touches. We have passed on your compliments to Aunty Mamik - she is a very experienced instructor and in fact the first teacher of our director and my wife, Putu Evie.

My wife and I booked a private workshop with Vaughan and Purnama during our recent trip to Bali. It was a really wonderful expericne. Vaughan began with a fascinating talk on the variety of gamelan music and on the instruments we were about to try, which he and Purnama demonstrated for us. Purnama then invited us to select instruments we would like to try playing, and introduced us to some basic techniques and building blocks of gamelan music. We were a little nervous at first, as neither of us had any previous experience of playing gamalen and knew very little about it, but Purnama was such a patient and generous teacher that he had us producing some sonorous sounds before long. I would highly recommend this workshop for anyone interested in Balinese culture, musicians or non-musicians.

Upon getting married, my wife and I came to Bali on our honeymoon. Me being a percussionist musician, and my wife aware of my interest in gamelan, she booked us a 4-hour workshop with Mekar Bhuana. We requested that we only stick to the music side of the tradition, rather than the dance side. Vaughan and the rest of the staff and family were warm, friendly, and personable from the onset. We felt welcomed from the beginning. After being given an expert and authentic overview of the history and culture of Balinese gamelan, we got straight into the instruments! They patiently taught, demonstrated, and played alongside us. They are able to adjust their teaching right to your level of musicianship. They hold sacred the tradition and playing technique of the instruments while graciously welcoming you into that culture at the same time. We never felt intimidated at any point. I would recommend this experience to anyone interested in gamelan-- or even if you are just looking to dip your toes into the water! They are able to expertly gauge your level of interest and experience and cater to your needs. Everyone was extremely friendly and hope everyone gets to experience this!

It was a great pleasure to teach both of you! When your wife contacted us, she said that this was very important to you as a professional musician, and we're glad that we could make it happen (especially in the middle of your honeymoon!) and that you both had such a positive experience. We were astounded how quickly you took to a range of instruments from different ensembles, particularly gender wayang and gender rambat, which are difficult instruments technique-wise. Satisfied smiles all round!

I'm a dancer...a world dance professor. I normally like to spend my summers learning a new cultural dance form. I found Mekar Bhuana Balinese Cultural Center on the net via YouTube and the great reviews of the experiences of others. So I decided to study there (before pandemic)...and it was the most wonderful and fun experience I will never forget. I didn't just learn dance, I experienced the real culture of Bail. I highly recommend Mekar Bhuana Center. Fun for solo travelers and families! Kids too! Thank you so much for the fabulous experience!

I went to Bali wanting to know a little more about its unique music and found this place through an online search. They are situated not far from Kuta and offer courses in Gamelan music and dance. I had a 2 hour introduction on one specific instrument (I bought the practice version of it to take home with me) by a very talented balinese musician. Vaughan and his wife (the owners) were lovely hosts. They are really putting a lot of effort into preserving Gamelan and making it accessible to people throughout the world. The visit was certainly on of the highlights of my trip.

What a wonderful experience for both amateurs and experienced professionals. The staff here were amazing!!!!! Vaughan is knowledgeable helpful and caring and Mas Pur was an amazing teacher!!!!! If you want to learn to play Gamelan, this is the place to go.

We are glad you enjoyed your gamelan lesson learning gangsa from our antique Semara Patangian orchestra. With a music background like yours, as well as further lessons on this instrument, private workshop would be something to consider for your next experience studying at our centre - then you could learn about the history of Balinese gamelan, see many instruments demonstrated and also try a selection of instruments from different ensembles that are made from various materials and have different tunings and tuning systems.

Truly a treat to have the opportunity to learn about Balinese Gamelan music and instruments from such talented musicians (and to support a great organization in the process!). I took a rindik lesson at Mekar Bhuana and it was by far the highlight of my visit to Bali. My instructor, Pur, was super knowledgable, patient and encouraging and just a ton of fun to work with. Will definitely sign up for a workshop series when I return. Thank you Pur and Mekar Bhuana!

Yes, we do offer suling lessons as well as private workshops (more indepth with explanations and demonstrations by an ethnomusicologist and a demonstrator).

Sorry we only just saw your inquiry.
We don't teach ocarina at Mekar Bhuna, but we do teach many Balinese gamelan instruments from the archaic and court periods in Bali. In fact, you can even experience learning on antique instruments at our centre.
Next time you come to Bali, please email us to our website (search for Mekar Bhuana on Google) well before you come to book a private lesson (for practical sessions) or a private workshop (longer and more in-depth and presented by an ethnomusicologist and a demonstrator, where you get to try your hand at numerous instruments of your choice).
