Nous avons rencontré Samboon, un éléphant de 64 ans avec qui nous avons passé plus de 2 heures. Nous l’avons nourri avec des bananes et du riz car il est très gourmand. Nous avons pu le toucher et lui faire des câlins. Cet éléphant est adorable et aime beaucoup le contact avec les visiteurs de la ferme. Nous avons ensuite eu la possibilité de choisir entre promener avec lui ou lui faire prendre un bain. Son Mahout nous a très bien accueilli et nous a donné de nombreuses explications. Je recommande sincèrement ! Une moment unique et touchant.

Super mooie ervaring. En belangrijk : diervriendelijk! Wat wij hebben gezien wordt er goed met de olifant omgegaan. Geen ritjes of andere gekkigheid. Voeren en wassen. Erg leuk. Bijzonder te zien hoe de eigenaar met de olifant communiceert.

The best elephant sanctuary I have ever visited.
I wasn't too sure what to expect beforehand, but from the moment I arrived I knew I was in for a wonderful time. A very eco and sustainable farm looking after Soomboon (a retired working elephant). He is well looked after and loved by the farm.
An intimate excursion caring for him, cooking and washing him in the pond.
The family take care of him very well.
To feed him, walk alongside him and bath him was the most wonderful experience. The farm surroundings and views are breathtaking.

It was the 2nd time we went to the Sonchana Farm with a group of friends and again: we spent unforgettable hours on the ecological Sonchana Farm.
Part of our group booked the "elephant experience": We learned interesting things about elephants, cooked for somboon and fed him. You can also "wash" the elephant in the pond and bathe with him. Somboon is the loveliest elephant I've come across. He is treated very caringly and respectfully by Khun Aek - and the elephant obeys Khun Aek's word.
The other part of our group booked the "Retro Thai Cooking Class". Cooking is only done with traditional methods - with bamboo, banana leaves, clay pots over an open fire or with charcoal - no gas, no electricity and, above all, there is no plastic. The bowls are made from bamboo and the plates are made from wood. It was fascinating - and the food tasted heavenly.
Be sure to book both experiences - it's worth it.

Wir verbrachten unvergessliche Stunden auf der ökologischen Sonchana Farm.
Ein Teil unserer Gruppe buchte das "Elefanten-Erlebnis": Wir lernten Interessantes über Elefanten, kochten für Somboon und fütterten ihn. Aufgrund des Regens verzichteten wir auf das Baden im Fluss mit dem Elefanten. Somboon ist der liebenswerteste Elefant, dem ich begegnet bin. Er wird von Khun Aek sehr fürsorglich und respektvoll behandelt - und der Elefant gehorcht Khun Aek auf's Wort.
Der andere Teil unserer Gruppe buchte den "Retro Thai Kochkurs". Nur mit traditionellen Methoden wird gekocht - mit Bambus, Bananenblättern, Tontöpfen über dem offenen Feuer oder mit Holzkohle - kein Gas, kein Elektrisch und v.a. es gibt kein Plastik. Die Schüsseln werden aus Bambus hergestellt und die Teller aus Bananenblätter. Es war faszinierend - und das Essen schmeckte himmlisch.
Unbedingt beide Erlebnisse buchen - es lohnt sich.

I loved this farm so much. The elephant is so sweet and so well taken care of and the farm is beautiful. Totally worth it, one of the best experiences of our trip.

Qui n'a pas rêver de chouchouter un éléphant ? C'est ce que propose cet endroit. De la préparation de son repas à la toilette à la piscine, une expérience formidable. De plus, par la suite, nous avons préparé, guide par la maîtresse de maison, notre repas du midi. Encore une fois, je recommande vivement la visite de la ferme. Merci pour ce moment.

We had an amazing experience at Sonchana farm ! First caring for Somboon, cooking for him, feeding him and bathing him.
And then an amazing cooking class ! We had great fun with our children during this class. And never have we eaten such an amazing meal !!! We had mentionned we were vegetarians and the meal was suited to our requests : the recipes were made with tofu instead of chicken.
Thank you for an amazing experience, these memories will be treasured for a long long time.

Vandaag zijn we op pad geweest met Top om de olifant te verzorgen. Het was geweldig. Top legt alles goed uit en zorgt ervoor dat je het optimaal naar je zin hebt.
De olifant krijgt perfecte zorg van dit leuke gezin. Echt een aanrader!

As someone has already asked how can this be a sanctuary if they’re letting people ride elephants ???? Is the sanctuary just for the one elephant that can’t can’t carry tourists around anymore ?

They don't let you ride the elephant. He is an old "retired" elephant and is being cared for.
I saw in other comments that you can ride him during bath time but we we're concerned by this as we didn't bathe with him

If this place is sooo amazing why are there so many pictures of people riding elephants....specifically two over weight people on one elephant?

Hi all, we will be traveling by motorbike from Phuket to Khao sok and onwards via the coast to Krabi. On the way I would like to visit this elephant sanctuary. Would you recommend we visit it on our way from Phuket to Khao sok or on our way from Khao sok to Krabi?

Contact can be made through facebook messenger by searching for Sonchana Farm and Elephant Sanctuary. If you message them they will be more than happy to arrange a taxi should be around 3000baht from Khao Lak round trip maybe less if you do it yourself

How far is this from Phuket? How does one get to the Farm? Do we need to make a reservation in advance? thank you

We were picked up by one of the family members from Khao Sok village and driven to and from the farm. You could also get a taxi from the village, which I would guess would cost about 300baht.
The journey from Phuket takes about 3-4 hours on the public bus and costs about 100 baht.
You do need to make a reservation - contact them via facebook messenger to arrange.

Hi! i'm super interested in this tour but I cannot spend much time in Khao Sok... that's why i'd like to know how long was the tour. Maybe ir was from morning to evenig? or just a few hours? And also... how did you arrange it for you and your family? I haven't found the tour on internet and i don't know how to book it... THANK YOU!
