My husband went on this cookery course and he will go again (his choice, I'm not that bossy). He was taken shopping by Hussain and two other learners. Hussain found out what they liked to eat in the short journey to the shops and came up with the menu accordingly. Peter made borek, acini esme, lamb with bulgar wheat apricots and plums and beef with orca. Tonight, back at home, we had borek and esme - delicious. He really enjoyed the day ( about 4 hours from 10am) and it was well worth the £32, really, I have never spent money better, yum.

We were picked up from our apartment and taken to buy the ingredients for the day. Some tastings plus food and language education. Then back to the restaurant for a few hours preparing the meal. Then to the best bit eating what you had produced. A good relaxing day especially when the weather is not so good (we had showers today). Great value for money. Finally dropped off back at the apartment. Hussein is a charming man and we had a great laugh with him throughout the day.

We spent a day last September with Hussain at his cookery school. What a wonderful day we had. We were the only two guests on the course as it was towards the end of season which made the whole experience for us.
Hussain collected us from our apartment and firstly took us to the filo pastry shop, then to the butchers which was really interesting then onto the cheese shop then to his restaurant.
the food we cooked was fabulous and we enjoyed it with a lovely glass of wine and the company of Hussain which was lovely.
He showed us around his lovely home and rooms which they let out to guests.
Gurus place is definitely on our list of places to return to eat next September and I think another cookery lesson is also on the list.
We hope you have a great season in 2017 and look forward to seeing you again.

This was a great experience and in my opinion well worth 150TL per head. I think it's also a nice way to interact with locals and their culture.
Chef Hussein picked us up for free from Kalkan. We visited a filo pastry bakery, a butchers, cheese shop and veg shop. It was a brief but insightful explanation into these produce. He asked us what we'd like to cook which we appreciated.
We then spent three hours cooking a meal of kebabs, spinach- feta filo parcels, aubergines and cauliflower in yogurt.
We enjoyed eating these for lunch at his picturesque restaurant.
All in all, i thought it was worth it much like the majority of comments.

My daughter and I decided to do this having read the reviews here. We weren't sure as it's expensive by local standards (150 TL per person plus 30 TL for pick up and drop off from Patara), but in the end we gave it the benefit of the doubt.
We enjoyed shopping for ingredients and we visited a shop where they make filo pastry and another where we could taste different types of cheese. It was nice to hear a bit about this and Hussein was great at explaining the processes. Having decided on the menu it was back to the restaurant. After a short rest the next hour or so was spent chopping up meat and vegetables. The dishes we made (meat and veg wrapped in pastry, green beans and bread) were simple. Although the food was tasty, I was disappointed not to learn more about Turkish cookery. However I was grateful for Hussein showing me another way to make bread and spending a bit of extra time so we could do that.
Throughout the morning Hussein took pictures and videos, posting constantly to Facebook. I found this extremely annoying and was left feeling that the experience was more about advertising his business than teaching us to cook Turkish food. Given the cost (over double that of the fabulous 8 hour boat trip including lunch, which we had done a few days before) I was left feeling rather unsatisfied by the experience.
The other people in our group were children and young adults who had been signed up by their parents. They seemed to enjoy it, but if you have a genuine interest in cooking then I don't think this 'course' has that much to offer.

This is a real must if you visit the area near Kalkan, I can't recommend this highly enough. We had a fabulous morning and lunch with friends learning some Turkish dishes, from shopping for the best ingredients to cooking them, taught by the cuisine guru himself Hüseyn. Who effortlessly collects you from your villa. Introduces you to all the best local stores to buy the ingredients, then on returning to Guru's Place, we are introduced to Turkish food at its best as he educates and guides you on how to cook each dish. As a great chef he understands food and wine, in a way that inspires and excites you. #gurusplacekalkan #gp #cookingschool #kalkan #turkey #turkishfood

We got picked up from the villa by chef Hussein. He started the day by taking us to buy the ingredients in various shops.
We then returned to his restaurant and Gas a refreshing cup of apple tea. What an amazing place. The perfect place to unwind, relax and enjoy the picture postcard views.
Once his staff had cleaned all the vegetables our family ranging from ages 66 down to 6 months began peeling the vegetables and cutting the meat.
We were given clear instructions and Hussein was more like a family member than an instructor.
We had a wonderful day preparing Turkish casserole and pastries.
We then had the pleasure of enjoying our food that we prepared.
This was a really memorable day and really glad we did it as a family. My teenage boys got a little bored but tried to keep them engaged.
Expect to pay approx £30 per head but that does include the ingredients and drinks. So overall not a bad deal at all.

It is a couple of years since we were in Kalkan and visited Guru's place, but on this holiday we visited for an evening meal and then booked on Hussain's cookery course, which was a great experience. It was excellent to shop for the ingredients that go into making the superb dishes at the restaurant and then have the opportunity to work with Hussain and the team to create your own lunch. As always we were picked up and then returned back to our holiday property by Hussain. It was also a great way to learn a little about the history of cooking in Turkey and gain insight into where we should buy our fresh ingredients during our stay in Kalkan. We will be going back to Guru's place before we head home, but I would encourage everyone to take one trip away from Kalkan's central restaurants to experience traditional, family Turkish cooking as it should be.

We had a great time at Guru's Place Cookery School - we were collected in the morning and taken to see how yufka is made then on to the local shops to collect the ingredients we wanted to use to make dishes - we were asked in advance what meat / veg we would like. Moving then to the cookery school with great views across the mountains we prepped and made the food and finally got to eat it (delish).
We enjoyed the location, being introduced to the whole family and the relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant. Having set out about 9am we got back around 2.30pm - a really good day out, and lovely to do something a bit different. The only recommendation I'd make is that it would be handy to get a print out of instructions on the dishes you've made when you leave (although perhaps that stops any spontaneity with the food?).
Cost was roughly £35 and if you need to email it's Gurusplace at hotmail dot com.

We visited here as a two families with 5 'children' from 17 to 24 included.
We were picked up in the morning, taken to buy all of the food, including, cheese tasting!
Then we enjoyed cooking lunch together in the kitchen, with lots of handy tips.
And obviously the best bit at the end is eating all the lovely food you've cooked, would definitely do this again.

Yes it is still on, my husband and sister went in May this year. If you have Facebook look up gurusplacekalkan and you can message Huseyin. They both really enjoyed it, my husband has been 3 times now and I like tasting the fruits of his learning! We go for meals in the evening as well. The food is delicious.

Rach,
I am sorry but I do not have an e-mail, I asked the hotel reception to phone Guru's cooking school to book me in. Not sure if this is of any use, I would persevere as the class was very good, and light hearted. I have cooked Iman Byaldi and the Borek cigar rolls at home and they worked well. Take a camera, I took pictures all the way through, and helped when I got home.
Hope you get through and book in, well worth it. Chris.

How did you book this?

Gillian,
We got our Hotel reception to book it. There were three of us and Hussain came and picked us up, and brought us back again after. Only took about 4 hours, but was great fun. The school is next door to Adams Place on the Kas road.
If you are trying to book before you get to Kalkan they have a web site "cookingholidayturkey " with phone and e-mail.
Give them a try, you won't be disappointed.
Chris.
