Located about 20 mins north of Nikko is this beautiful but challenging canyon walk. It begins at Ryuokyo Train Station where there is plenty of free parking.
Steep stairs lead down from the carpark to the rivers edge and to the first of many falls Nijimi Falls or Rainbow Falls. It was a beautiful sight and one of the main events for the walk. This led down to Nijimi Bridge where we had fantastic views of the gorge and river itself. It was flowing well with stunning colours and again the gorge was extremely steep and deep. We crossed the bridge to do the circuit walk and found this side to be quite challenging. It was a rough unformed track and quite muddy and there was not much to see.
By the time we reached the Musasabi Bridge which meant flying squirrel we were exhausted. Again there were excellent views from here and it seemed it was the only place we could actually see the river from.
We now headed upriver towards the viewing points. We then passed bear warning signs. This was another slog although the path was a bit more even. There was minimal signage and it was only in Japanese. After about fifteen minutes we came across two rough side tracks that led close to the cliffs edge, but due to the heavy tree growth we could not get much of a view. We could get glimpses of fantastic views of churning falls and beautiful river, but could not get any photographs.
Thankfully we passed a local who pointed out a goat track not far from Musasabi Bridge that led to another lookout. It was one of the best views of the walk looking up the winding canyon. We could believe how it was named as the Dragons Tail. It was a wonderful sight and we wished we had found it earlier and stopped here.
On the return we saw a Japanese racoon which was a highlight.
The total walk took around 2 hours and was quite demanding. Appropriate foot wear and some fitness is recommended.

This an amazing hike. Stunning views. You can do a short or long hike. We did the long hike, about 7km from village to village. It is well marked, but there are some steep drop-offs. Lots of up and down at the start from the Ryuokyo Station. A moderate hike. Well worth it. Trail starts in between souvenir shop and restaurant.

The waterfall basin is soothing. I couldn't really feel the autumn leaves, perhaps because they had been scattered by the rain or because there were not many. On the way there, you go down the stairs, and on the way back, you go up. There is a difference in elevation, but the steps are gentle. Even elderly people were struggling to get to Nijimi Bridge. We had shaved ice and fresh yuba soba noodles on the terrace of a restaurant near the parking lot. It was a cloudy weekday with light rain, so it wasn't very crowded. The station is located between two tunnels, and it feels like a hidden station on a local line. The Kinugawa Free Pass is a good deal up to Shin-Fujiwara. The fare for the Yaiwa Railway beyond that is paid in cash when you leave. There is also a bus stop in front of the station. There are not many trains, so if you are going to Kawaji Onsen, why not combine it with other trains?

The walk from the Shiowara bustop on the Kinugawa Onsen-Kawaji Onsen local bus route south through the gorge and back up to Ryuokyo station/bus stop takes about an hour.
The path is relatively easy, and offers great views of the Nijimi Falls etc.
Spectacular in fall/autumn/syksyn värejä.
Stay in Kawaji Onsen, rather than Kinugawa Onsen.
Much quieter, plenty good hotels, riverside walks.

We used the spacious free parking lot off the national highway, passed by the row of restaurants that exuded a Showa-era atmosphere, passed under the torii gate and headed down the promenade.
We didn't have much time so we turned back halfway, but even just the area around Goryuo Shrine and Nijimi Falls was well worth seeing. However, some places were steeper than we expected, and our legs got tired, making us lament our lack of exercise.
There are various set hiking trails, and we would like to take more time to explore a wider area.

Train ride from Nikko to K Onsen, then to the end of the line but so worth the effort..A good two hour hike in stunning beauty.Trains departing are on an hourly schedule so check with the stationmaster when you get off or check google maps.Would go again, its that incredible, we saw 6 different waterfalls on March.

龍王峡ハイキングには４つのコースが設定されていますが、今回は約3キロメートルの「むささび橋巡回コース」に犬連れでチャレンジしました。途中には滝や清流、巨大な奇岩など見どころもたくさんあるので気持ちの良い散策となりました。折り返し地点のむささび橋には休憩できる売店もありました。結構ワイルドな道のりで所要時間は約60分でした。

龍王峡（りゅうおうきょう）は栃木県日光市藤原（とちぎけんにっこうしふじはら）にある峡谷だ。海底火山の活動によって噴出した火山岩が鬼怒川で侵食されてできた渓谷が約3kmに渡り続いている。
2021年10月7日、この日は旅籠屋日光鬼怒川店に宿泊していた。そこから車で、龍王峡（りゅうおうきょう）にやってきた。駐車場は無料でとても広い。入口にある立ち枯れた木の洞の中に龍王観音が鎮座する。鳥居を抜けていくのが歩行順路入口のようだ。案内看板でルートを確認。龍王峡は白龍峡、青龍峡、紫龍峡の3つのエリアに分かれるが、今回は一番下流側の白龍峡を歩くことにした。約1.6kmの道のりとなる。
虹見の滝が見えてきた。虹見の滝には晴れた日には美しい虹が架かるそうだ。あいにくこの日は小雨交じりのお天気（；涙；）五龍王神社（ごりゅうおうじんじゃ）が鎮座する。見下ろすと、鬼怒川（きぬがわ）が美しい。遊歩道を進み、虹見の滝の上流部にやってきた。虹見橋までやってきた。虹見橋から鬼怒川を見下ろす。虹見橋の上からは、虹見の滝と五龍王神社を一緒に見ることができる。
対岸に渡り、遊歩道を進む。多くの滝が落ちているのがよく見える。むささび橋まで歩いてきた。昭和52年竣工の吊り橋だ。むささび橋からの眺めは素晴らしい。なかなか幽玄な世界だね。お茶屋には立ち寄らず、戻ることにした。
このあたりはミズバショウ群生地だそうだ。かめ穴に到着。甌穴（おうけつ）のことだ。しかしどこか分からない(汗；)たぶんアレのことだと、自分を納得させた。分岐点から線路を渡って戻ることにした。龍王峡駅が見えてきた。高知県の駅のような小さな駅だが、複線なのでさすが栃木県（苦笑）せっかくなので、龍王峡駅に入ってみた。車で先に進んだ。
