Piața Victoriei - Victory Square – ist ein schöner Stadtplatz. Aktuell ist hier auch eine Aussichtsplattform mit Blumen eingerichtet. Ich war kostenlos oben und hatte dann den kompletten Platz in Sicht.

Back in the Communism era before 1990 this square was called the Opera sq.
From the balcony of that same Opera the Romanian uprising and Revolution started overthrowing the Causescu dictatorship within just few days.
In honor to that event the square was renamed as a Victory Square and Timisoara was proclaimed the first liberated city.
The square itself is some 500 m long, stretching from the Opera to the beautiful Romanian Orthodox Cathedral on the southern side. Along that path are beautiful (but pretty neglected, now renovating) Baroque and Art Nouveau edifices with a nice central flowered lawns in the middle.

For sure Victoriei square in Timisoara is one of the cities landmarks - however this time the review is focused on the holiday season and the Christmas fair.
So for sure the period of early December till the end of the year is one of the periods when most cities a lit by the millions of LED's of Christmas decorations and Timisoara ain't no different. Now for several years in a row the Victoriei square is housing the Christmas fair - lot of lights, booth with souvenirs, snacks, cold and mostly hot drinks are being available for the travelers (and locals) for sampling at price.
In 2022 was no difference - nice decorations (above expectation - to be honest) were decorating the square from the Opera to the Cathedral in very nice way (indeed Timisoara is preparing for 2023 when it is going to be the cultural capital of Europe - one of them at least - for the whole year).
So if you are searching for a reason to visit the city that had "adopted" me, 2 decades ago the period of December might be very interesting.

The Victory Square (Romanian: Piața Victoriei), known until 1990 as the Opera Square (Romanian: Piața Operei), is the central square of Timișoara. It is the place where Timișoara was proclaimed on 20 December 1989 the first city free of communism in Romania. It was a main boulevard, transformed into a square after the closure of the southern side by the construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral. The opposite poles of the square consist of the Opera to the north and the Metropolitan Cathedral to the south. From the Opera to the Cathedral the promenade on the right is called Corso, and the one on the left is called Surogat. Both have protected architectural ensembles of local historical importance.
The square hosts the buildings of some important institutions such as the National Theater and Opera, the Orthodox Cathedral, Timiș, Capitol and Studio cinemas, the Museum of Banat, several art galleries as well as many shops and sidewalk cafés. Some of the most important cultural events take place in Victory Square: JazzTM, Timfloralis, FEST-FDR, Opera and Operetta Festival, Easter and Christmas fairs, New Year's concerts, etc.
The square hosts the buildings of some important institutions such as the National Theater and Opera, the Orthodox Cathedral, Timiș, Capitol and Studio cinemas, the Museum of Banat, several art galleries as well as many shops and sidewalk cafés. Nice place to visit. If you are in the city for an event, the food is very good. You can take walks, the center is pretty and the Bega river.

All major landmarks of Timisoara are within a walking distance in the Old Town. Piata Victoriei is between the Orthodox Cathedral and the Opera house. Victory Square looks great in spring when all the flowers blooming.

Incontournable, c'est le site de la révolution de 1989. Beaux immeubles qui restent encore à restaurer, ne pas rater la statue de la louve romaine. Aux extrémités de la Place, les monuments "mythiques" de la révolution : la cathédrale orthodoxe et l'Opera. Très certainement un très beau site quand tout sera restauré

Piata Victoriei is a nice square in the historical centre of Timisoara. I liked very much the buildings on both sides! The focal point is the towering Romanian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedrala Ortodoxa Mitropolitana) at the south side of the square.

La piazza in sè oltre a essere maestosa sarebbe anche molto bella, tuttavia allo stato attuale ha troppi edifici contemporaneamente in restauro e pertanto perde molto della sua tipicità (a partire dalla facciata dell'Opera). Presenza di fiori molto colorati, è la piazza dove si sono ritrovati gli abitanti della città a rivoluzione compiuta.

I like the place, but it could be cleaner. The smell was quite strong and the pavement needs also some improvement!

Hello, I recently visited Timisoara and enjoyed my time there. However, I have one question that bugged me and my girlfriend whilst we were there. In front of the Opera House on Victory Square, there are many staircases that lead underground that are no boarded up. Where do the steps lead to and why are they boarded up? Many thanks in advance, JH.
