Sorry for the delay in answering your question. The answer is do you wish to get an idea of the history of the place or if you are a history etc buff who delves into every detail of the past. You could spend a day or a week in St. Petersburg alone and barely scratch the surface. Similarly the same can be said of any of their bigger attractions of which The Hermitage is possibly the most varied regarding works of art etc., and the cost of entry for a few days soon mounts up. The other point that has to be addressed is that the Russians are not keen to have individuals wandering their country as opposed to an organised group and I felt that , as tourism is fairly new to them, they are inexperienced in dealing with what we in the west would term an ideal situation for making a few bob , so be prepared for a level of stand offishness when they are dealing with tourists. This may relax in time but it is there. Getting back to the Hermitage the crowds and noise can be substantial and everyone wants to take photos.
