SWMBO and I were planning to visit ShiXiang Garden (TA reviewed September 2020) but at the local bus stop we were informed that it was closed for a few days due to a local lockdown. Not to be daunted we revised our destination to the Orchid Garden, which is known locally as the Artist Garden probably because of the paucity of orchids.
We clambered on the bus and showed our green suikang codes, had our temperatures taken swiped our travel cards for the short ¥2 ride to the garden. We got off the bus a stop early and entered the park through the north gate.
Just note there are many gates, but you can only enter and exit through the north and south gates.
Another note, the garden is across the road from the main gate of YueXiu Park (TA reviewed November 2019) and next to the new Guangzhou YueXiu International Convention Center.
There aren’t many visitors these days and us rolling up disturbed the girls at the entrance from their mobile phones, they were even more upset when I waved my passport and was deemed old enough to get free admission. SWMBO being under 60 had to pay the standard ¥8.
Before we could enter, we had to scan the garden’s QR code to record our presence.
Another note, without a modern mobile phone, a WeChat account, and a suikang code you can forget about travelling in China these days.
Anyway, we entered the garden and I hauled out my Pentax K70 to record our visit. First off was a sit down in a pavilion and eat some biscuits for lunch. Of course, this attracted the ducks and fish in the pond and they got their share. They’re starving as there’s not many visitors. I had a sachet of fish food in my bag and this was also welcomed.
Being suitably rested, we strolled around the green and lush garden. There are paths everywhere. Rather than reading just look at the photos.
We met one vocal mum cat, who was very appreciative of the cat biscuits I always carry in my bag.
SWBO saw the ‘cave’ she wants to live in next to the near the Tongqintang (同庆堂) offices,I gather it’s a Chinese Medicine company. The small seating area provided another opportunity to eat a few more biscuits, an orange and drink tea which SWMBO had thoughtfully brought. Just as well, as none of the cafes are open, and there’s a paucity of orchids at this time of the year.
The garden, except for the north gate entrance, is relatively wheelchair friendly, and the toilets are new and spotless.
After a couple of hours, we had meandered from the north to south gate, and considered ourselves suitably greened.
SWMBO now wanted to go and explore the Korean garden in YueXiu Park, so that’s where we headed next, but disappointment awaited us.
The next morning, we were relieved to see our suikang codes were still green. Phew! How long can our luck last?

That actual entire garden is very nice indeed. Very lush, very been, not a lot of free space in the planting. Plenty of water, bridges, enticing paths etc.
But the orchidsv are limited. This is not Singapore!

Небольшой парк, красивый, весь в зелени, но орхидей совсем немного, пару горшков стояло с обычными орхидеями. Вход 8 юаней для взрослого, для детей 4

I did not expect to be here again, but given we are nature lovers we wanted to go someplace interesting. Glad to have made the call to see this place again. Worth it.

I observed to SWMBO that we have passed the Orchid Garden many, many times over the years but have never visited it, so it was about time we did. Besides the rain which had poured down over the preceding three days had stopped, if only for a few hours.
With our packed bags with the usual essentials we trudged through the semi-tropical humid climate to one of the local bus stands and caught the bus to YueXiu Park. The bus stops is only about 50 metres from the East entrance to the Orchid Garden.
Note: If you come on the metro to the Orchid Garden use line 2 to YueXiu, go though the machines at the exit at the top of the escalator, turn right and then left and go up the escalator to the pavement. If you go under the road with the throng you’ll end-up at YueXiu park. Then it’s about a 100 metres to the East entrance.
There’s a sign at the entrance giving details of the ticket prices, but for all intents and purposes to foreigners it’s 8 Yuan unless you’re over 65 then it’s free. Once again, my passport got me another freebie.
In we went. The first thing that I noticed that there were more gardeners and leaf sweepers (a never-ending task) than visitors. The second, just how green and lush was the vegetation and there’s a lot of it. Thirdly, the thousands of pots with green leaved plants in them, I’ve no idea what they are but they are everywhere.
We strolled around the Garden and made our way in rather a round-about way to the Orchid Exhibition Centre. Signs are in English and Chinese. There weren’t many orchids but those that were blooming were nice and colourful.
Then out of there and past the tea-house which juts out into one of the ponds. It look’s a nice place to just drink tea and chat about business. SWMBO wasn’t impressed as no dim-sum was offered.
There’s also a small café tucked away, but it wasn’t open. Maybe only on holidays is it worth opening. Looked nice inside.
Note: If you ‘drink tea’ in GuangZhou you normally eat dim-sum dishes as well as drinking numerous small bowls of tea.
SWMBO was more impressed by the paving and the numerous stone bridges over the streams, she reckons they’re from the original botanical garden that was on the site before the Orchid Garden was opened in 1957. We wandered along the paving and climber some more modern concrete steps and eventually found the Aromatic Flower Garden.
Now this is a hidden gem. Very, very nice and no wonder it won a gold medal in Munich in 1983. There’s a plaque about it. While we sat and enjoyed the garden while eating slices of pear and hami melon, the fish in the pond enjoyed the fish-food from my man-bag.
It would be nice to say we enjoyed the peace and quiet, but the garden has main roads on two sides and a huge building site (another new exhibition centre) on another, and the background noise is incessant but eventually you just get used to it. Living in GZ dulls your senses to traffic noise.
Sated, we continue to explore the site. We found a wonderful new exhibition building about the parks of GuangZhou and their designers and history. There’s a lot of parks! It’s a pity, all the information was in Chinese. Not surprisingly we’ve visited most of them, but a few were new to SWMBO and she duly took photos with her mobile for future reference.
The mid-afternoon sky was now looking rather dark and the wind was increasing. We headed towards the North Gate but stopped to admire the very nice lake and watch a chap in a skiff clearing fallen leaves from the water. Talk about painting the Forth Bridge?
The North Gate is opposite, by about 100 metres, GuangZhou’s Main rail station. We jumped on a #34 bus just in as the heavens opened as usual for a couple of hours. No wonder everything is so green and lush.
We’ll certainly go to the Orchid Garden again as I’m sure there’s more to see.

We decided to visit the Orchid Garden since we were outdoors and in the area. The entrance cost was minimal and the garden is not as large as you would expect, so we managed to explore in no time. Its well maintained and thankfully the weather was pleasant, which made the visit enjoyable.

This is located opposite the park on the other side of the road.
It's small but has a great selection of orchids and other fauna. Nice to stroll and to take pictures.
Cost was 8 RMB

I tend to aim for quiet places in big cities and this is one of them, we had it more or less to ourselves in a Sunday in late January. Tickets are only 8 RMB and the gardens are well landscaped, aim for summer if you want to see the orchids in all their colours and variety as most are dormant mid winter. Nice walk, some of the hard naturalistic landscaping is a bit too ‘fake’ for my liking on in the whole the gardens are a nice green interlude on the northern edge of central Guangzhou. Well worth a visit.

Hi there!
I'm a photographer and am planning to visit this park during this weekend.
My question is can I use the tripod for shooting pictures in the green house and other areas of park?
Thanks very much for your reply.
