It’s nearly a year since my last review of BaiYunShan, as the locals call the whole area.
My last review of the park was about our perambulation from the west gate entrance. This review is about a trip beginning at main entrance next to Yuntai Garden (TA reviewed Feb 2021) and ending at the west gate. We’re far too old and decrepit to walk the whole way, so we took the cable car up the mountain, then walked to the ZhouCun restaurant for dinner, after a nice dinner we took the restaurant’s electric cart to the west gate.
Over the last few months, we’ve been many times to the main entrance to take the electric bus up to the little pond at the Nengren Temple (TA reviewed) to feed our turtles Mo, Brick and Lazarus as well as the other turtles and fish. Unfortunately, a month or so ago the pond was fenced off and drained to build something and all the turtles and fish have been moved. To where, nobody knows! Hopefully to the big pond within the temple, so it’s farewell and good luck to all of them.
This time, SWMBO suggested we take the cable car rather than the bus. The cable car costs ¥25 up and ¥20 down, the up ride also included entrance to the park. No reduction even though we already have annual entrance, but children and ‘old soldiers’ etc. get a discount.
Then it was a walk to the cable car, there are toilets available for those who are so excited by the prospect of the ride, and for those for whom the ride down was too thrilling. There’s a baggage security check just in case someone decides to hijack a gondola
The gondolas don’t stop to let you on, but they don’t move very fast, so you just step on and sit down, eventually the door automatically closes and off you all go up the mountain.
The ride takes about 10 minutes, and you get spectacular views of the city and park albeit through the grime of the gondola’s windows. SWMBO wasn’t happy about me squirming about the get photos as she was sure the slight rocking of the gondola would result in us plunging into trees below
At the top SWMBO was glad to get her feet back on terra firma, a case of the more, firmer the less terror!
After fortifying herself with a bowl of tofu from the snack bar SWMBO was ready for the 7.4 kilometer walk to the west gate. She was a little disappointed when I reminded her that the ZhouCun restaurant was about 3 kilometers from the west gate, so our walk would be well under 5 kilometers.
So off we set, on what turned out to be a very nice walk with some lovely views of the city. There’s building work underway on what appears to be a new scenic spot viewing. We found a restaurant for a future dinner, SWMBO reckoned it can be accessed from the other side of the mountain. There were lots of people walking in both directions just reaffirming you’re never alone in China and there’s no shortage of young people.
There are plenty of places to sit and admire the view and enjoy the mountain air. Of course, we fed a couple of cats with biscuits from my man-bag.
All the time SWMBO was enquiring if we were on the right road. Of course, we are I assured her with crossed fingers. However, not until we came to the Plum Blossom Valley, a nice little park within a park, that we’d visited before was she reassured. Too late for the blossom.
We took a few minutes to admire the colourful exhibits for the Guangzhou Garden Expo 2023, an event of which I’m looking forward to taking some photos, as the colours in the sun should be vivid.
Then it was only a few minutes’ walk to ZhouCun and sitting outside for a dinner of pork and egg zhou, beef with noodles, and green aubergine (egg plant) and green beans. A bottle of beer for me, and a pot of tea for SWMBO. Say £20.
Then we took the restaurant’s free little electric bus down the hill to the west gate, and finally a cab home.
A tiring day that SWMBO wants to do again, but taking the bus rather than the cable car up the mountain, and dinner at the newly found restaurant.

At least twice a week SWMBO and I take the short bus ride to the West Gate of BaiYun Mountain which is next to GDUFS (Guangdong University of Foreign Studies).
Once in the park, we walk up the ‘mountain’ via the new Tea Garden ( a nice place to rest weary legs) to the ZhouCun restaurant (TA reviewed under its old name of SongFengXuan and still patronized by us once a week) and then swing left and walk down through the trees via the bamboo forest, bamboo pond and leave the park by the little used gate next to the bus terminus opposite the GDFUS Affiliated Middle School where we get a No. 1 bus Back home. It’s a good three-hour walk and takes us around the Huanpodong Reservoir.
I first reviewed this part of the park in March 2017, and much has changed including the addition of the Tea garden and 'new garden.
Note: the locals call the park BaiYunShan, which translates to White Cloud Mountain, but calling it a mountain is a stretch of the imagination.
Now that we are into summer with daily temperatures hovering around 35C, this three-hour walk is a bit on the tough side for us two oldies. Luckily at the beginning of this month the road that runs along the embankment of the reservoir has reopened after a year’s closure due to work on the reservoir and its surroundings. This halves the time of our walk.
So, on this week’s walk we were some of the first to walk the ‘new’ road, in fact the tarmac was still rather sticky as the sun beat down on it. It looks very nice but now there is nowhere to sit and enjoy the cool breeze off the Huanpodong reservoir and the antics of the anglers and swimmers which are now ‘forbidden’. However, I’m sure they’ll soon return but I’m not too sure about where we can to sit.
At the end of the road, we turned left and walked down the hill and through the bamboo forest and past the bamboo pond. There are numerous little paths to follow through the forest if you feel adventurous.
Then we passed through the new arch and into the new garden which has a stream fed from the reservoir running through it. I say ‘new garden’ but it’s been there for a couple of years after being transformed from a derelict site. Here I always loiter on the little bridge and feed the fish while SWMBO check her social media as are plenty of stone seat for those so inclined.
Then it was a short walk via the little gate to the bus terminal, and the No.1 bus back home.

There are fumes that cover the whole city. Haze like pollution means you can not enjoy the views as you can hardly see anything.

This place is not too far away from downturn, about 30 minutes by car.
It's a good place to visit for a hike. They have different trails. At the top, you can get a good view of the Guangzhou city.
Some call this place the lung of GZ, where you can get good fresh air.

Baiyun Mountain(白云山) is the landmark of Guangzhou. It is very suitable for family trip. In here you can see all city sceneries. The air is fresh so many people come here for exercise. I and my friend went up by cable car(25RMB including park ticket). After spending 2 hours to get the top of the mountain, we went down on foot. After spending couple hours with visiting scenic spot, we finally went down. Some disappointments are 1.scenic spots are scattered over the road so they taken us a long way to get it. 2. Some spots need extra tickets. Although tickets are not expensive, I still feel uncomfortable.

I went to BaiYun Mountain with my family, though we took separate paths up. I began earlier in the morning in 云溪生态公园 and entered the BaiYun Mountain area by paying 5 yuan at gate near the back of the 云溪 park. This began a trail through the jungle woods which stretched for quite a while and went up the side of the mountain. It took me about 90 minutes with some birding along the way. It is a fairly rigorous hike, especially the last part which takes you toward the summit where there are stretches of stairs.
My family came up the chairlift from the South entrance (chairlift opens at 9am) after this we met up and walked around a bit of the park. There certainly are plenty of places to wander though also a fair number of people. It is not secluded.

If you enjoy hiking, this is the perfect place to go to over the holiday season or just the weekend. The park is massive with lots of tourists. A suggestion would be to carry bottled water and some snacks should you wish to picnic on the grassy slopes. There's a honey bee plant on site. Hormonious ambience, popular amongst the locals, perfect for a day visit..

Due to the coronavirus we all took leave so i got time to have some fun. Baiyun mountain is a good place to go and can exercise a lot to burn my calories. I started from south entrance which the cable car is available as well and i decide to climb to the summit. I sweated and exhausted however i am happy the view is nice and took a lot pictures. I choosed another route for go downhill. After long walk i found these are totally two different places and actually very far. I had a nice day with plenty of nice pictures.

My partner and I will be travelling this December to Baiyun Mountain straight from Guangzhou airport. We also plan to hike up then ride a cable car down. Is it possible? If it is, what public transpo do we take? From what gate etc. Thanks in advance

Taxis are very easy to get. Just show them the place: 白云山 (Baiyun mountain)
When you arrive, take the Gondola up to the top... You can also take it back down.
Avoid going on any holidays or weekends. It's very nice. You'll have a great time

You don't really need a tour for Baiyun Mountain. You can go there by public transport and you can easily climb it without a guide. There are well-marked paths and signs to show the way. Enjoy the climb.

I thought there was a small fee to enter the park, e.g. 10 RMB. It's a good climb up and worth doing. The weekend is a good time to go, and the earlier in the morning the better because of the heat.
Another less strenuous but lovely place to walk round is Yuexiu Park. It's close to the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall, so you can do a few things at the same time. Shamian Island is also worth walking round. A walk along the river close to Sun Yat Sen's campus on the island is also pleasant.

I was not able to use the subway to get to Baiyun Mountain.
It was convenient for me to take bus B17 all the way to the Yuntai Garden bus depot. From here it is a short walk to the cable car station which can take you to the top of Baiyun mountain.

hello. i already read information from many web but suddenly i got confused.
First, i have a question about the way to go to the mountain. i imagine the route will be like this
1)take a bus/ subway to the foot of mountain
2)walk to the park around 1km (mostly steps) or 2km (mostly flat)
3)arrive at the park
4)if i want to go to mountain so i can take a cable car
5) go down with cable car and walk again for subway/ bus.
or it will be like this
1)take a subway to the foot of mountain then walk to the park around 1km/2km
Or if I want to enter the park, I can take the bus that go straight to the park without walk
2)if i want to go to mountain so i can take a cable car
3) go down with cable car and walk again for subway/ bus.
can i know which one is true?
Second, I read an information from travel chinese guide : White Cloud Mountain (Baiyun Mountain)
I saw there is a sightseeing bus. Can I know where I can take the sightseeing bus? At the park?
And I saw that there is a lot of attraction place. Like yuntai garden and bird spring valley park. Can I go to each attraction by walk and how far each attraction from each other?
I’m sorry for a lot of question but I can’t imagine .i try to search a map but can’t find it. I want to go there around 6hours and I want to arrange the place first so I will not waste any place

Hullo Ahmad,
My economic and time-saving advice :
Depending where you are staying it would be best to locate a bus to take you to Baiyun as early as possible. Bus#864 served me well from HaiYun Bridge.
From street level, take the electric car to the Garden of Cherry Blossoms where you can spend a good 30 minutes. Entry not free.
From there, another electric car will take you to the top of the mountain. On a clear sunny day the view is spectacular.
There are many places to eat at the top but I suggest you follow the trekking path down to the Greenway Café for a meal with a view. The path continues off the motor road where you can take pictures of the great landscape and skyline of Guangzhou.
Eventually, the path will join the road which will lead you to the gates of Yuntai Gardens. Entry not free. (The same place where you would alight from the not-so-cheap cable cars.)
These gardens are a mini Amsterdam and I was taken by total surprise. Spent almost two hours to cover this wonderful Park of daffodils and roses and windmills.
The whole experience took 7 hours. Hope you enjoy it too. Just ensure you have extra batteries for your camera.
