Chris works with amazing local guides. We started our first day in Kyoto with Kazue, who took us to places we wouldn't have found on our own, even though we are experienced independent travelers. She modified the tour to our preferences, focusing on showing us sights and access points we wouldn't have found out on our own, and explaining a lot of what we were seeing with her incredible historical and cultural knowledge.
We also enjoyed another tour with Maki, who showed us around part of historic Kyoto where she grew up. She took us to some of her favorite alleys, talked to her about what it was like growing up in the neighborhood, pointed out homes, trees and walls with curious shapes she's known since her childhood, and took us to sights that only a local would know. It was great to hear a lot of memories from her childhood, especially when it came to temples, gardens, alleys, geishas and other amazing sights that we saw. It was unforgettable and we'll always connect her stories with our experience in Kyoto.

The guided tour with Maki was a delight from start to finish! She was exceptionally knowledgeable about geisha, the districts through which we were walking and Kyoto in general. She made the geisha community—both its history and present status—come alive. In a mixed-age group (8 year old, teenager and adults), she was able to communicate effectively for all age levels and kept all of us captivated throughout. She was able to modify the information and walking route to maximize our potential of seeing geisha, as well as a pace perfect for our group. We would have missed so many special details and facts about the Gion area, and the price of the tour was absolutely worth every single yen. All four of us on the tour agreed that this was a highlight of our entire trip.

I hope this business is still running! We arrived in Kyoto for the first time in January 2020, had never been before. I had booked a number of walking tours for my family, again a new experience, and was hopeful it would all work out. After extensive research I settled on Chris Rowthorn Tours. Our guide was Maki. Oh wow, from the first second I knew I'd made the correct choice. My family, (3 x sceptical male teenagers) were won over very quickly. I was so thankful to have booked. Maki was exceptional, connecting with all 5 of us very easily, so informative and helpful with everything. In fact she went out of her way to help us with any query. The tours were amazing. I can't speak highly enough of Maki and these tours. I truly hope that through COVID-19 they will survive and everyone, especially Maki and her family, are okay because I can't wait to return.

Our many thanks to Chris Rowthorn and tour guides Kaori (Tokyo) and Koto (Kyoto) for introducing us to their amazing culture, history, food and people. Their 10-day post-cruise itinerary was created just for us, and showed us some of the country's many unique highlights -- from spotting Geisha girls and women in the narrow streets of Kyoto's Gion district on an evening walking tour, to visiting one of the art islands, to spending a night in a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan) and bath (onsen). Our two guides were knowledgeable, accommodating, flexible, thoughtful. They assisted with purchasing and changing rail tickets as we travelled here and there, made restaurant suggestions, shared Japanese etiquette, and helped us transition smoothly from hotels and cities and train and subway stations. I was a bit apprehensive at first going to a country where not many spoke English, but our wonderful guides revealed a truly amazing country, and raised our appreciation of the Japanese people, their country and peaceful way of life.

We chose to do an entire day when we first arrived in Kyoto. Our guide was Maki. It was a wonderful experience, and we were introduced to many aspects of local culture that helped us later when we were on our own. It was a bit expensive but worth it as it enhanced the value of the remainder of our trip. we did walks 1 and 3.

Thank you very much for the kind review! I'm delighted that you enjoyed your tour with Maki. She'll be very happy to hear this. We design our tours so that, in addition to shedding light on Japanese culture, we also give our guests a lot of information about getting around Japan on their own. We also like to recommend good things to see, do and eat when they are on their own. We believe this is one of our roles as guides to Japan. We are glad that our approach worked well for you. I'm sure you're busy and we appreciate you taking the time to post your review. We hope we have the pleasure of serving you again. Thank you!

We have just arrived back from Japan and I just wanted to say how wonderful Mika was on our Gion Evening Walk. Her knowledgeable stories, the history and personnel experiences of the world of a Geiko and Maiko were absolutely fascinating. We learnt so much. It was an absolutely wonderful experience. We were so lucky and saw so many Geiko and Maiko and when even your guide is so excited to see the numerous Geiko and Maiko, you know you've had an unforgettable experience. At first, I thought it to be a little expensive, but it was worth every cent and would highly recommend doing.

Our family (two adults, two children 7 & 9) went on the 2 hour evening tour of Gion with Ms. Maki. It was truly unforgettable, and an experience we couldn't have had without her expertise to guide us. She picked us up from our hotel, where we walked to quiet streets in the Gion district (notably, away from all the hordes of tourists, and exactly where the geiko/maiko actually are!). On the very first street there we saw a geiko who Maki informed us was one of the most famous in Kyoto. From there we went on to see another 7-8 geiko & maiko in total. We saw a group of three getting into their taxis, and one smiled and waved at our children!! When even your guide is speechless, you know you've had an unforgettable experience. Thank you so much, Maki, and Chris Rowthorn Tours for creating a magical evening for our family.

I'm glad that you were able to see some maiko and geiko on your tour. I really appreciate you mentioning how Maki took you away from the crowded areas and brought you to the best spots to see geisha. That's something we try very hard to do. Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to have a real maiko wave at them, but it seems like you were very lucky indeed. What a fantastic tour! Our guide, Junko, was really knowledgeable about the area. We walked through the Yanaka area of Sendagi which was very quaint. We toured Ueno and Kiyosumi Garden. They were beautiful. We had a great lunch, and she got us comfortable and ready to tackle the metro on our own for the rest of the week. Junko offered us some ideas on what to do for the rest of our trip. I couldn’t recommend this tour and Junko more!! You won’t be disappointed.

My husband and I took two private tours with this company - one in Tokyo with our guide Midori and one in Kyoto with our guide Maki, both were exceptional. Both guides were very well educated about the history of the areas we were going to and Japan's history in general. It was very interesting to learn from a local about Japanese history and culture. On both tours our guides knew the best ways to get around the cities to avoid the crowds and I loved all the little details that they pointed out about the area that had we been on our own, we certainly would have missed. They also both had great lunch recommendations and we thoroughly enjoyed our shabu shabu lunch with Midori in Tokyo, a highlight of our trip!
Chris' website is wonderful planning tool, while we did not pay for his trip planning services, all of the information on his website was very helpful in planning our own itinerary. All of his websites information on how to avoid the crowds was spot on and we enjoyed many of his "off the beaten track" itineraries on our own - they were very easy to follow and so enjoyable to view beautiful temples/shrines without the crowds.

I appreciate you mentioning the fact that both ladies are well educated about the areas they were guiding. I also appreciate you mentioning the fact that they know the best ways to get around their cities. This is becoming increasingly important as Japan gets more crowded. In addition, it was kind of you to mention the fact that they were able to give good restaurant recommendations. We did the 2 hour night tour of Gion with Ms.Takagi. She was incredibly knowledgeable about everything geisha/geiko/maiko. We loved hearing about the history of the geiko in Kyoto, and Ms. Takagi even took us to spots away from all of the other tourists to see the geiko and maiko leave for their jobs that night. Our guide was even very helpful in recommending food options for us while we were in Kyoto. Overall the tour was very professional and informative, and I would highly recommend this tour to those who are interested in the geisha culture.

Not a question, but it wouldn’t allow me to leave a second review for our tour with Shizuko in Kyoto. She was so incredibly nice and accommodating with the baby. She showed us some fantastic sites, including a very local path to the Inari Shrine. Also, the lunch place she picked out was awesome!! Thanks again Shuziko!

Are any of these tours suitable for a family with a 2 year old? In particular, we are looking at doing the Gion evening tour.

Hi Kaylyn20, I did this tour with my husband and 13 year old son in December. We arrived by local train from Arashiyama as we had the same guide for both tours, so we continued straight to Gion. As it was December it was dark quite early, but I feel this added to the charm with all the lanterns and lights. We were moving on foot most of the time with the longest stop to watch the Geishas and Maiko, probably about half an hour. We walked along the river, then passed the Kabuki theatre. Our guide was very flexible and allowed for toilet stops (at my request!), and my husband was interested in a shop we passed and the guide came in with us and helped us purchase a local souvenir. I think you will be fine with your 2 year old, I would assume you would take a pram as the tour is done at a brisk walk so you see more sights. The streets were quite narrow, some with no footpaths. As long as you make any concerns or requests clear to the guide in advance I think you will be fine. This is after all a private tour, so I felt they did a great job to accommodate our requests as we went along.
