My friends and I usually do not take tours while on vacation but we were glad we did while we were in Kyoto. We had an amazing time with our guide Aki, who guided us on an 8 hour tour - Walks 2 and 3. We loved her energy and her welcoming personality. She was very knowledgeable and taught us so many things about Japanese culture and each area we visited. Along the way, she gave us recommendations for food and other activities for the remainder of our stay in Kyoto. She also answered our questions about Japan's way of life and we got an insight of her own life as well. She was always checking up on us if we were okay since some parts of the tour got crowded and if we were tired since we were on our feet almost all day! We highly appreciated the quieter paths with her on Fushimi Inari and Tofuku-ji to avoid the crowds and to really appreciate these sacred areas. We already want to go back to Japan and would definitely book another tour with Chris Rowthorn Tours!

Dear Chris,
I wanted to share our experience using the a company one in one your articles and you provided a link for - 'The Japan Experience.' I purchased two Suica Welcome cards for $41 and they did not work on the subway or bus system, first in Tokyo and later Kyoto. The only worked at 7-Eleven. For some reason I thought they would come loaded with enough money to get me to my hotel after a long trip, but they were blank. After we loaded money onto the cards using a kiosk at Tokyo Airport they still did not work on the subway. This company seems to be out of France and when I approached their customer service about the problems I had they were extremely rude. I would suggest removing them from you recommendation list.
What I found worked extremely well was to simply down load the Suica Card from the Apple App and add it to your wallet for free, and it worked extremely well.

I’m sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with a Welcome Suica card. I’m a little puzzled about why you posted this review on the Chris Rowthorn Tours page, since we do not sell Welcome Suica cards or recommend other companies that sell such cards. However, it’s certainly the case that IC cards (Welcome Suica, Suica, Pasmo etc) can be rather confusing for first-time travelers. This is why Chris Rowthorn Tours offers a Tokyo Orientation Tour where one of our guides will meet you at Haneda and Narita and help you buy and charge an IC card. The guides can also help you buy or pick up regional rail passes, shinkansen or regular train tickets, etc. And when you're done with those things, you proceed to do a walking tour with our guide.

We booked two day-long tours in Kyoto. Maki was our guide for both days and we couldn’t have asked for anyone better. She was friendly, knowledgeable and, without her, we wouldn’t have known what we were looking at!
She also took us to nice lunch spots (especially the tempura restaurant) and helped us find our way home.
Highly recommended, in fact almost a must when in Kyoto. Thanks Maki.

Chris Rawthorn (well, his websites) has been my constant companion for the past several months of planning for our first Japan trip. Information is clear, well-organized, comprehensive, and accurate, whether you are looking for food, lodging, experiences/tours, or transportation. Communication with his office, for reservations, payment, and confirmation, is rapid and clear.
We did a half-day tour of Tokyo (guide Chizuko was informative and flexible for what we wanted to include on the tour) and a half-day tour of Kyoto (guide Shizuko was also informative and accommodating in meeting our requests for changes to the basic itinerary). The maiko dinner in Kyoto, arranged through Chris's office, delivered in every aspect and, while not inexpensive, provided an invaluable insight into an aspect of Japanese culture experienced by few Westerners (and thank you to interpreter Koko who again (do you see a pattern here?) was informative and gracious).
Lodging in Kyoto was chosen from Chris' "Inside Kyoto" website, and the "Truly Tokyo" website is similarly simply the best source of information I found for Tokyo. I'm recommending, to any future travelers to whom I speak, that they use the sources above as the foundation of their Japan research and planning.

I would highly recommend this tour of tokyo, it was interesting to see local sights as well more well known ones, definitely loved how knowledgeable and accommodating Ms. Sachiko Yamamori was about tokyo, she was extremely helpful in booking shinkansen tickets and helping to navigate my wife allergies and finding places and snacks that she can enjoy. Anyone that is going to tokyo should consider this company especially when new to Japan!

We went on a tour of Osaka with Sakae and also tours of Kyoto with Maki. Each tour exceed our expectations with the tour guides being amazing individuals with extensive knowledge of their tours. Both guides were extremely helpful going above and beyond what was required of them.
We cannot recommend them enough and it was an absolute delight to have met them both.

My wife, daughter, and I took Chris Rowthorn's Walk 2 - Tofuku-ji Temple tour and 4 - Gion evening walking tour in Kyoto. in each cases the tour was outstanding and well worth the cost. Guides were both knowledgeable and generous in sharing their insights, and kind in adapting to our wants and desires. We were impressed with their professionalism and intimate knowledge of small details of each location. We could not have hoped for more!

Miho-san took myself, my wife and our daughter on a delightful tour of Northern Higashiyama and Secret Highlights and part of Southern Higashiyama. You can check out those tour routes on their website (Walk 1 and 3). It was an utter delight - Miho-san was engaging, gave us historical insights and allowed us to explore at our pace (both fast and slow). We learned a ton about Jopanese history and the interplay of Shinto and Buddhist beliefs (and the symbolism at the shrines and temples).
We mostly were able to stay away from the hordes of tourists!
We cannot recommend Miho-san and Chris Rowthorn Tours more highly.

A wonderful experience with Maki. If you are looking for a superb way to experience the beautiful gardens, temples, and shrines of Kyoto minus the crowds, this tour is for you. Plus Maki sent me on my way to explore even more gorgeous secluded temples and gardens. Maki shared such interesting facts. She really made my trip to Japan special. I highly recommend this tour.

Hello Chris, my husband and I will be in Kyoto 16.10-21.10 and are interested in an excursion that includes a walk through the Arashiyama bamboo forest , a visit to iwatayama (snow monkey forest,) a visit to the senkoji temple, the romantic train ride, (sagano) with a return boat trip on the Hozugawa Katsura river. Not a question, but it wouldn’t allow me to leave a second review for our tour with Shizuko in Kyoto. She was so incredibly nice and accommodating with the baby. She showed us some fantastic sites, including a very local path to the Inari Shrine. Also, the lunch place she picked out was awesome!! Thanks again Shuziko!

09 HOURS GRAND FULL DAY TOUR ON SEAT-IN-COACH WITH LUNCH (starts at 7:00am)
You will first visit the Tokyo Tower, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Tokyo from the observation platform. Next is the Meiji Shrine, the finest example of Japanese shrine architecture. Then driving through the Akasaka Guest House. The Akasaka Guest House is a magnificent western-style palace built in the baroque style. Next drive by the Japanese Capitol, dominated by a massive tower and visit the Imperial Palace East Garden. Here you can enjoy a pleasant walk through the garden as a place of historical interest and scenic beauty. We drive through the shopping district of Ginza. You will enjoy Japanese style lunch (only included in the tour if lunch option is selected at time of booking). We continue to Hamarikyu garden which is a typical Daimyo (Japanese feudal lord) garden in the Edo period with a tidal pond. Next enjoy a 30 minutes boat ride on the Sumida River. After the cruise, you have a chance to see Ninja and Samurai performances at the pier. At the end of tour, visiting the Asakusa Kannon Temple and walking down the brightly lit Nakamise shopping street, then we drive through Kappabashi area where restaurant supplies and wax food samples are sold, and Ueno and Akihabara.

Then you will take the double-wired sky gondola for a breath-taking view of the volcanic Hakone Mountains, arriving at Owakudani Valley (the Valley of Hell). Admire the view of steam escaping from the rugged mountains of Owakudani. You will also have the chance to try an Onsen Tamago (an egg boiled in hot spring water). Next, a boat ride on peaceful Lake Ashi, you can sit back and relax amidst the picturesque and serene natural beauty of the crater lake. We then return to Tokyo by motorcoach.
