After hiring three other guides on our Asian adventure, we can easily say that Mr Taka was by far the best. He drove us around Kyoto in his spotless six passenger limousine. His English is flawless and his knowledge of the sites and area is expansive. We mostly appreciated his spiritual approach to the temples and shrines that we visited. He did not just impart information. He brought us into his spiritual life in a way that was authentic, and yet very comfortable for all. This was easily the best 6 hours of our entire Asia trip.

We (family of 4) used Taka’s (Takakazu Machi) service for touring Kyoto in mid January 2025. Our experience was great.
He communicates effectively and speaks fluent English. We started out the day by going over our wish list with him. With his input, the itinerary was finalized with a combination of popular spots and some off the beaten path.
He managed the time and the trip plan efficiently.
His service comes with a large van. It was more than enough for all 4 of us. Most of the spots we wanted to visit are scattered around the city. His van provided the mobility we needed.
Taka knows the city inside out. Not only that he can find places quickly, he also knows the short cuts to get there, and the nearest parking spot. That really helped us in optimizing our time.
Along the way, he would point out information about the place, culture, and history. His narrative also provided us the much needed context for what we were seeing as well as a better appreciation of the culture, history, and architecture. We feel that his story telling brought the ancient Kyoto streets alive.
He took us to a small udon restaurant (大原家, Ooharaya) for lunch. The food was excellent, the yakitori was done to perfection.
For each of the sites we visited, Taka would tell us the best photo-op spots. Whenever we needed a picture of all 4 of us, he always came to our rescue.
Taka is both informative and entertaining. If you are looking for an insightful tour of Kyoto, look no further. Taka is your guy.

We had an amazing tour of Kyoto! Taka spot very great English, was highly knowledgeable about Japanese history and culture and took us to amazing areas of Kyoto. My teen kids loved the tour as well (hard to please teens nowadays). We highly recommend Taka if you’re looking for a tour of Kyoto!

Taka was the best! We did a five hour tour in Kyoto and saw the main things we wanted to see, as well as a small temple that we were not aware of (and was one of our highlights). Taka is safe, very knowledgable, great sense of humor and customized to our needs. And he takes really great photos! I would highly recommend Taka as a private English guide!

Taka was a fantastic tour guide for our short stay in Kyoto. He customized a tour for us and our 5 year-old son, and the tour remains a highlight of our two weeks in Japan. Taka's van was comfortable and clean, and he shared some of Kyoto's most fascinating sites with us in a way that was both informative and fun, even for a small child. We'd happily book another tour with Taka!

We had a wonderful day with Taka. We took the bullet train from Osaka and arrived in Kyoto in 15 minutes. Taka met us at the station and we took off in his pristine van for a day of sightseeing. Taka’s English is impeccable and he is a charming and very knowledgeable host. It was a very hot day but his air conditioning in the van works great and he always ran ahead to cool it down for us! I was very dehydrated and Taka noticed and shared a dissolvable tablet with me that rehydrates you quickly….. like Gatorade in tablet form. (I subsequently bought 2 bags of these to get through the rest of the trip.) Taka took lots of pics for us at the various sites and offered us a great deal of flexibility in mapping out our stops. We have traveled to many places around the world and taken many private tours and we rate Taka among the top five guides we have toured with due to his English skills, knowledge, professionalism, and genuine care given to his guests. Do not hesitate to book with Taka…. he will give you a tour to remember.

We just returned from a 15-day trip to Japan. On our first full day in Kyoto, we hired Taka-san to take our family of 4 on a tour. Taka picked us up in his well-appointed and comfortable vehicle at our hotel in the morning. Taka listened to what we wanted to see -- we didn't really have a strong list, more of a loose plan - and then we were off. During the drive, Taka shared with us little things and details about Kyoto we never would have learned on our own. His English is *perfect* and so it is very easy to communicate with him. We enjoyed all of his very funny and wonderful stories about life in Kyoto and all of its rich history. We got to visit many temples and shrines, a bamboo forest, and a drop-dead gorgeous and stunning overlook. WE WERE THE ONLY ONES THERE! It was like a private show of the gorgeous landscape of Kyoto and the surrounding mountains. Japan in August is very very HOT and HUMID so it was such a treat to have Taka shuttling us around and then leaving us on our own, but he was never too far away with the A/C going in the car! The highlight of our day was when Taka joined us for lunch - he took us to a tonkatsu restaurant whose name translates to "Pig Gorilla." We had some of the best tonkatsu of our lives, and while we waited for the food, Taka entertained us with origami at the table. My two teenagers were so charmed by him, and teenagers are not impressed by anything! They loved the tour and said our nearly 8 hours only felt like 3. Do yourself a favor and book with Taka, it will make your stay in Kyoto nothing short of magical. The email communication to book the tour and any weather related updates are fantastic. Do it!

Absolutely the best part of our time in Kyoto was our guide, Taka. Riding in his car gave us a chance to see parts of the city we would have never experienced. Taka had snippets of information and historical facts about pretty much everything. It made our experience much more rich than had we wandered alone. He also was able to get us very close to each site via car so the July heat didn't totally kill us.
Taka has so much knowledge! Everywhere we went was made special. We ended up having other tourists sneakily try following us just to hear what he was saying.

We booked a tour with Taka for our first trip to Japan to show us around Kyoto. What an amazing experience! Taka took us to some of the most magnificent, magical spots…we enjoyed every second of exploring this breathtaking prefecture. The history, the nature, the food…exquisite. I HIGHLY recommend this tour and Taka, specifically. He’s articulate, knowledgeable and so personable. We can’t wait to return and explore further.

We visited Kyoto June 2024 and hired Taka-san for a custom tour to certain sites around the city (Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Kinkakuji, Ginkakuji, Fushimi-Inari-taisha). Taka-san’s friendly demeanor and impeccable English helped put us in a touring mood that rainy morning. Riding in his car also gave us a chance to see parts of Kyoto that we would never get to see via subway or bus by providing a day where we did not have to constantly walk from dawn to dusk in the humid weather, thus helping us conserve and recover our energy from the previous days. He also accompanied us inside each tourist attraction and gave us some additional information and description of each site. We also thoroughly enjoyed Taka-san’s explanations of the history of certain neighborhoods and surrounding areas of Kyoto as he drove us to our destinations and between each site. He also helped seek out choice spots to take some nice family photos at the various sites/attractions (my daughter was impressed by his photo-taking skills at the bamboo forest!), and suggested a great tonkatsu place for lunch. Our family had a great time during the tour, and we highly recommend hiring him for a half-day tour of Kyoto.

I am sorry, the capacity of our biggest car is for 6 guests. We specialize tours for small groups and cannot guide your party.
We don't do tours using 2 or more cars.

Hello! Does your vehicle accommodate a 5 year old child in a car seat?

Since our cars are designated as taxi cabs, we are exempted from the duty of having seats for children. You do not have to have a car seat for your child.
FYI, even if you would like to have it, we cannot prepare car seats for children.

We use hourly rate, not per day.
Basic rate for a sedan is 6100 JPY per hour, and basic rate for a mini-van is 6600 JPY per hour, if the tour is only inside Kyoto city. This price is for one group. These prices include transportation and guiding fees. Entrance and parking fees are not included. Please hire us at least 4 hours a day. If you hire a sedan for 6 hours, it will be 36600 JPY, and 39600 JPY for a mini-van.

Do you book by emailing the tour company? We are coming to Kyoto from Tokyo on bullet train for one day tour and want to be picked up from train station.

I know tipping is not the norm in Japan but it seems very odd to not tip our guide. Did people offer tips? Is it considered offensive to tip?

For our service, you don't have to tip. It's not expeced. However, if you tip, it is apprecitatively accepted. Tipping is not offensive.

I agree with the all the other responses. I took a tour with Taka and LOVED it just last month (June). Being hot and humid, having a car was a great relief between places. Also, your itinerary can change depending on the weather and time of day so to be able to squeeze in another site or change to another and still have time to see it was helpful. You can eat up a lot of time trying to figure out where to go in an unfamiliar place.
