This is a small well maintained museum in Altus. I was very impressed with the manner in which the displays were presented. When we come back to this area, we will visit again and bring family.

We visited here on Dec. 29 as part of a long road trip from our home in southeastern PA out to New Mexico. We combined this mid-sized museum and the slightly larger Museum of the Great Plains in Lawton (see separate review) for a nice day’s outing.
The main gallery here is very well done, beginning with its many topical display cases packed with artifacts; each display was accompanied by large sturdy pages that you can flip through for more information about that topic. This room also contained many wagons, carriages, etc. There is a small exhibit here on the cotton industry in OK (we didn’t realize cotton was even grown in OK until we passed some cotton plants while driving through that area). Outside is a half-dugout cabin and rancher’s homestead.
In all, we spent just over one hour here and really enjoyed it. There was plentiful free onsite parking and a very reasonable admission charge. By the way, there is a nice virtual tour feature at their website if you want to explore the museum interior online.

There were no signs at all for this museum and it was way back in a residential area. No one would know it was there without reading about it first.
It cost $3 each for seniors. A very informative lady took us into the museum and quickly explained how it was laid out and also described how this region was also part of the Greer County that Texas claimed. It was a beautiful, large museum. It had a section on the local Indians. Another on the cattle drives which included a Goodnight chuck wagon. There were some marvelous sculptures by Charles Russell and Remington. They had an impressive display of clothing. Outside they had a sod house and an old rock home. There was also lots of farm machinery.

Very nice little museum. Inexpensive, but very well done. I've lived in Oklahoma 22 years, but I still learned a lot about this side of the state that I never new before. Excellent indoor and outdoor exhibits. People were also very friendly. Highly recommend if you have an hour.

My great-uncle is G. W. Long, the photographer whose work is significantly displayed in this museum. In addition to this well-done display, my wife and I enjoyed the many artifacts and historical documentation of the plains area. The staff was very friendly. A good way to spend a couple of hours.

Jeanie & her staff are continually striving to incorporate additional early history of this unique region of the Western Prairie. If any single region inspired the famous play "Oklahoma", this is the place. There were huge cattle drives, farmers with fences, wolf hunts that lured President Teddy Roosevelt, the last of the Native Americans who resisted conformity to white man's ways and plenty of "bad guys" to inspire the many TV westerns that filled the airwaves.

Has many exhibits that are very nice! I have been to presentations here that have been wonderful! The curator, Jennie Buchanan, is a great presenter and really knows the history of southwestern Oklahoma!

Small but good quality Southwest OK history museum. We enjoyed spending about 1 1/2 hours there. Exhibits inside and outside relating to early settlers, cowboys, native Americans, etc.
Only negative is not much for preschoolers or young children- they would probably be bored. I think 6 years and up would probably enjoy some of the exhibits and koi pond outside.
The gift shop is very nice and the best place I’ve found in town to buy OK souvenirs. Mugs, jewelry, art, home items, etc. and some unusual finds. We picked up “mini tornadoes” for the kids back home. The gift shop prices are very reasonable.
It was a fun visit and worth the time.

This small museum is a real gem. It artfully depicts early life on the plains of Western Oklahoma and does a tremendous job of showing off the area around Altus. The different subjects are tastefully documented so that no individual subject is overdone. You leave this place feeling that it does a complete job of explaining the history and culture of the area without going overboard. The price is also right $3 for seniors. What a bargain for a wonderful experience.
