Great ski resort especially for beginners and great for little children to learn on the very easy Nursey slope with coffee and bars all around.
Locals were very friendly and food good and hearty.
It was very cold though and heating is by traditional fires so could be too hot ro too cold indoors !!

We have just returned from a great week’s skiing in Borovets, Bulgaria booked with Travel Solutions and if you are looking for an excellent, customer focused ski hire experience with fantastic ski instructors we would highly recommend Snow Masters Ski & Board School.
We are a party of five with different ski abilities including our son with special needs and for whom we had no real hope that he be able to participate in any sking experience.
Snow Masters recognised his difficulties on the first day and reached out very generously to our son offering additional dedicated individual instruction with a wonderful and patient instructor called Ivan who enabled him to have a ski experience beyond our wildest expectations.
The entire Snow Masters Team were very welcoming each day from the moment you walk into their ski depot in Borovets, the staff are so helpful by assisting with your skis, they take off and put on your ski boots (which is really appreciated at the end of a tiring day’s skiing! ). Nothing is too much trouble for them showing great patience when I and others in the party had to change ski boots a few times and providing advice along the way to those with less ski experience.
Thanks to Daffy and Vasko and all the Snow Masters team for the end to end high quality service especially their great team of ski instructors who made our ski holiday such an enjoyable experience for each us with lots of fond memories and many stores to tell! We would definitely come back to the Borovets Resort with Travel Solutions and Snow Masters Ski and Board School for our next ski holiday.

We visited on a three night deal, which was very cheap, and it’s a good resort for beginners.
We have only been to Bansko skiing in the past so aren’t experts, but would say this resort isn’t quite as big. It’s a shame tho at some of the runs were closed due to lack of snow. The runs are very small, so we didn’t have a lot of choice, I don’t think we would come back here.

This resort will suit anybody to whom skiing is not the main aim of visit. Appears to be frequented by large groups, mostly male, who get together to drink, shout loudly, talk rubbish and ski for an hour or two. The slopes are basic and really aimed at beginners. At time of our visit snow was sparse and due to resort’s low position this really affected how many runs were open. There seemed to be little to no piste etiquette going on with people bottle necking for a chat in dangerous narrow places and as you attempted to leave chair lifts. The lift attendants were a bit surly and unbothered. In the town itself there was a dark undercurrent of something I couldn’t/didn’t want to put my finger on. The many sex shops and joints (at least one placed next to a children’s playground) felt a little too sleazy for my tastes and a little at odds with a family holiday. However, had great food and a great evening at The Black Cat. All that said there were some people we spoke with who keep coming back year after year. Can’t help feeling if they ventured to some of Italy, France and Austria’s resorts, they would have their minds totally blown!!!!!!

Borovets Ski Resort is a less than 2 hours drive from the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia.
Quite affordable to ski there with many food choices around.

Picked some bad timing for skiing as there was almost no snow, but that has nothing to do with the 1 star review.
You get scammed everywhere you go. Every bar, every restaurant, every takeaway - except for one, Napoli.
You regularly order things where the prices are clearly stated and they try to charge more. Bills at restaurants are very difficult to understand, never correct and always more than they should be. You need to check your change at every single transaction and it will usually be short. Don't bother with cocktails, they don't have alcohol in them. If you question them on any of it, their ability to speak English evaporates instantly.
I don't mean this happened at a couple of places. I mean absolutely everywhere, with only one exception. The one gem I found which bucks the trend is Napoli. Nice food, honest family runs the place and gives good service. Can definitely recommend there.
Don't be fooled by the idea that it will be cheap while you're there. I spent more in a weekend than I do in a week in the Alps.

We came here February half term and wouldn't return that time of year again.
It was extremely busy - we queued for over 3 hrs on our first day to collect our ski equipment.
When we arrived it was lovely and snowy but over the course of the week, with no further snow, the slopes got very icy. Compounded by the fact the runs were so busy - there were a lot of accidents.
I'm a beginner skier and found the blue and green runs lacking (due to closures). Also, we felt the runs a little too narrow - we prefer wider and more open ones. They were pretty though.
The bars and restaurants are really nice and very good value for money. We had some good afternoon / evenings out.

Nice resort, good for skiing. The main problem is old and slow gondola that doesn't work when weather is bad. Choose hotels near centar.

2nd time skiing and 2nd time here, can't go wrong with it.
Plenty of nice blues for beginners and some brilliant red runs too. (Not sure on the black as not there yet!)
There are 2 main areas, Rila mountain and Masala mountain - the latter is reached via gondola.
Masala is in my opinion, a million times better than Rila. The views are unmatched on a sunny day and even on a cloudy/ snowy day the skiing is better. It's much higher up so conditions and snow are better - this also seems to put people off so its much quieter which is ideal. Some brilliant blue runs and red ones I could just do over and over.
Comparatively Rila mountain is way too overcrowded, people constantly knocking into you and conditions tend to be worse as its lower down. Might be okay very first thing in the morning but don’t bother after that. Its basically full of beginners which makes it dangerous as they have little to no idea what they're doing and have no control over themselves. If you cannot stop you should not be up there!! By the afternoon there are a lot of ski schools up there too in there long lines so just generally absolutely hate it!
Sadly the musala pathway was closed for our time there but this is a MUST if its open. Such a beautiful run right to the bottom of the mountain through the trees. relatively easy mainly blue with couple red parts but plenty of space to stop and take your time with it.
Overall a great resort. It’s so cheap, all the bars and restaurants are, so you won’t spend a fortune unlike many other resorts. We stayed at a hotel out of the centre but there was a free shuttle which was great and kept us away from the noise of the town. For food I’d recommend BJs bar (by the gondola) and mamacitas (on the main drag) both very good.

So with a week to go till we arrive at Borovets this is a roll call for anyone travelling in small groups who want to form one giant group with me and 3 others as we are all of fairly different abilities. My older brother is by far better at snowboarding than all of us and would benefit spending a bit more time with people of his level when on the mountain and then we can all go out for the evening shenanigans as a larger group. If you want to meet up feel free to comment here and look forward to seeing you all on the slopes!!! We arrive on the 29th in the evening and leave on the 7th in the evening. And we are staying at the samakov 👍.

Looking for some information on ski lift/Gondola timing please:
As with most ski resorts there are good and bad times at the lift and gondola stations so any advice on times to avoid due to large queues?
Also any recommended areas on the mountain to focus on for an experienced snowboarder?

Hey there. Today the weather was getting angry on the sunny days and is preparing to deliver some storm and snow for the next week's holiday.
Avoid peak hours around and between 9:30-10:30 in the morning and 12:00-12:15 in weekdays. And avoid the weekend in general.
Have a safe and enjoyable ride!

Hi all who have been to borovets.
A couple of questions:
Is it worth buying lift passes online prior to arrival, we have a whole day there before our first day on the slopes!
Any areas that are best for boarders? Any areas to avoid?

Just buy when you get there - no hassle and you get the liftcard. Areas depends of your niveau.

We are travelling to Borovets in Feb 2020 and have read reports that it's better to take ££ and exchange to LEV in the resort. Is that still the case?

In Bulgaria exchange rates at not that good anyway . Since you are from GB you could take credit card and use bank ATM . Exchange rates are for sure better than any Exchange Office can offer . On the other hand beware that some ATM have DCC or additional commission . Use Fibank ATM next to ticket office in hotel Rila. It's inside the branch and it's not having any additional commission . I used Curve and Revolut for that matter . I recommend Curve as it does. It have cash withdrawal limit and has a good rate . Revolut , Curve they are best option for travelling abroad.

Yes! Just make sure you own your own gear! They don’t rent clothing (pants/jackets/goggles).

If there's no snow in Borovets how much is it/is it possible to travel each day to Bankso or somewhere that has lifts open? What do people do if the resort is closed in terms of skiing. I don't want to do other things in Borovets, I know there's horse riding etc but I really want to ski. Any suggestions? Are there coaches put on etc?

I am currently in borovets there is a very little snow on the bottom of the learner slopes which has been used every day for the last week. Update here is that they are opening one of the drag lift on Sunday. There is snow forecast for Xmas eve. Depending where you are staying hotel may have pool/Spa facilities be sure to pack swim wear and flip flops and you can fill your time relaxing.

Hi , im going staying at the hotel rila in january (a family of 2 adults and a child) for a week half board. Just looking for roughly how much i would need spends.... we have paid for ski hire lift passes ect. just meals few beers and maybe 1 or 2 trips. thanks!
Hi James. We have been for the last three years and going again in Jan. We stay in the Iglika Palace. We also get half board and have all the ski stuff included. We eat out twice in the week and go out and have a few drinks in the evening. We don't do trips. I usually take £300 and bring back about £100.
