Enjoyed the Temple Visit

Lots of history is written down on the signs throughout and there is lots of modern history as well. The temple complex has enough signage in English to explain building's significance and the history of the area. I thought the international area was cool with examples of Indian, Myanmar and Thai style Buddhist temples built in partnership with those governments. In the middle was the Chinese temple area and it was cool to check out but the most busy. At the far end was the Qiyun pagoda with a really well written history.

Cost to enter is 35 RMB in the winter and 45 in the high season. They only asked for the green arrow and health code at entry. The metro is about 5 km away from here but White Horse Temple comes up on Didi. I would recommend avoiding Yangwan station midday as it can get insanely busy and there's limited ticketing machines.

I went mid day and I feel I would have enjoyed an early morning visit. There was lots of screaming and shouting in the busier parts which took away from it. I also don't see it too much but there was children relieving themselves inside the temple so tread carefully! Plan to spend between 1 to 2 hours here.

Luoyang:ssa sijaitseva Baima (white horse) temppeli on vaikuttava ilmestys. Vaikka olen Kiinassa käynyt varmasti kymmenissä ellei sadoissa temppelissä, niin tämä oli jo pelkän historiansa vuoksi paikka jossa kannatti käydä. Alue on iso, joten kävelyyn kannattaa varautua. Portilla vuokrattavaa ääni opastinta ei kannata vuokrata, sen antama lisä info alueen opastauluihin verrattuna oli todella heikko. Temppeli alueen loppupäässä oli kansainvälisiä Buddhismi temppeleitä (Thaimaa, Myanmar, Intia jne.) joka minuun silmiini vaikutti pelkältä kopioilta ja turistirysältä. Suosittelen kuitenkin lämpimästi Baima temppeliä ja siellä vierailua jos Luoyang:iin käy matka.

中国仏教発祥の地

後漢に仏教が伝来して始めて創建された、いわば中国仏教発祥の地。
・・・なんだけど、建物や仏様はびっくりするくらい新しい。日本の京都や奈良のような寺を想像して行くとあまりのギャップに愕然とする。
隣にはタイとかビルマとかの仏教寺院風のモニュメントっぽいのがあるし。
一度行けば十分かな。
洛陽の中心部からバスで４０分くらい。終点から１０分ほど歩きます。

This temple might actually rate four stars, but by this point in a tour of China I was very tired of visiting temples. Architecturally, it is not as impressive as many of the temples that I visited elsewhere in China, nor is its site as impressive as some, but it is more important historically than many other Chinese temples. There is quite a bit of English-language signage to help in explaining the functions and historical significance of the different buildings.

The site is large, seemingly divided up into large outdoor 'rooms' by hedges and trees. Some rooms are landscaped park areas, others house specific buildings with particular functions, and the central 'room' houses the main temple area.

As others have noted, there are recently-built Myanmar-style and Thai-style temples also.

As is usual in China, when you enter or exit you walk through an area of shops and food stores.

Peaceful and Serene

On a winter's day mid-week, you can have a very peaceful and calming visit here. It's cheap and easy to get to - 1.5 RMB by Bus 56 from Luoyang City. Entrance for foreigners is 35 RMB. Just follow the locals with their incense sticks from the bus stop! The temples have some beautiful statues. There is a lovely tea house at the back; the tea is free. The food stalls in the front are not worth the risk.

Abbiamo avuto la fortuna di visitarlo in occasione di una qualche ricorrenza religiosa, per cui il monastero era in piena attività con tantissimi monaci. Il simbolo da cui prende il nome è il grande cavallo di pietra che si trova all'ingresso. Il monastero è molto antico e ci sono belle statue di Budda, dei guerrieri dai visi feroci e tante divinità buddiste. Alla parte antica del monastero, negli ultimi anni alcuni stati di religione buddista (Indonesia, Thailandia e Myanmar) hanno fatto costruire altri templi nei loro stili caratteristici: uno è una piccola copia della pagoda d'oro di Yangoon.

56路バスに洛陽駅近くの始発点から乗車し、約1時間で到着しました。
仏教が中国に伝来して初めて作られたお寺という意義を知って、そこから更に仏教が日本にもたらされたことに感謝する人には訪れる価値が高いでしょう。

The White Horse Temple was originally constructed in the 78 CE and as such provided the blueprint for the typical construction of Chinese temples. None of the original structure survives, it has been reconstructed a number of times including after destruction in the Cultural Revolution.

Temple with a unique tea house

After visiting the magnificent Shaolin Temple, the White Horse Temple in Luoyang was a bit underwhelming,but nonetheless still a fine example of a Chinese temple. Standing for 1,900 years, it’s a significant temple as bears the distinction of being the cradle of Buddhism in China. The unique feature of this temple is not the temple but the tea house on the grounds which has a total silence policy. The tea is served free and the ambience is so serene and meditative. Don’t miss it.
