We enjoyed seeing all of the animals, especially the primate exhibit as well as the predator exhibit. The Alabama walkway was fun, just not a lot of animals on display. Have patience for the black bear exhibit! Would have liked to have a few different snack options around the park. Elephant exhibit is huge and love that it is a bachelor pod.

We had a really nice time at this zoo last week. It was very hot but we still enjoyed it. The splash pad helped us to cool off as well as sitting in the cafe. Most employees were very helpful and nice.

I think I have been to nine zoos. This wasn't my favorite. I hate it when a zoo doesn't follow a path and you have to do lots of backtracking. This zoo has paths that just end and you have to turn around. This is a ok zoo but my biggest problem was with the layout. Some of the paths aren't even paved! This zoo has lots of potential but right now, I can say that my family and I will not return.

I agree with all of the other one and two-star reviews. We went to the zoo yesterday using our year-long pass, which I will not renew. The new entrance is very nice but that's where the nice ends. Lipstick on a pig is what comes to mind.
I grew up in Birmingham and went to this zoo as a child and teenager in the 60s and 70s. It was better back then. The entrance may have been less attractive but at least they had animals. Yesterday, many of the exhibits were closed and if they were open, there were one or two sad animals in the enclosures. Lots of goats which you can see anywhere.
The train was not worth the money. The track takes you behind the zoo, through the woods where all you see are research buildings and old, dilapidated trucks. No animals!
What's the purpose of that??
Bottom line: Where is all the entrance fee money going?Certainly not to the animals. Birmingham needs to hire someone with some creativity as well as knowledge of animal habitats to make this a zoo worth visiting.

Very disappointed zoo trip. Reptiles closed, rhino closed, otters closed, only one elephant and not even in large habitat. Most animals are where u can't see them. $75 for 4 people and I feel like it was a full $20 visit. Then the zoo closed early because of a special event. Just ask around sad. Train not running. Spent tons money redoing the front and have focused no money on what matters. The front doesn't matter. Then you have to walk forever to even see an animal. Just terrible setup all around.

I have visited the Birmingham Zoo many times in my life. Attending as I grew up in Birmingham, through my college years on dates and now bringing my own children. My family has also held a zoo membership on and off for 11 years. However, after our experience today, I'm not sure we will be back- definitely never members!
Today my husband and myself accompanied our 6yr old and 3 of her class mates on their field trip. We pre paid the fees for admission and a train ride. We were not given a train ticket for the 4 children we were assigned, so we thought their wrist band was all encompassing. We stood in line for the train for 20 minutes and when we got to the front we were asked for our tickets. We explained we were with a school trip, my husband and I had tickets but the children were not given one. We were met with an immediate "no ticket no ride" from the conductor.
After talking back and forth with the conductor, who desperately lacked any customer service skills, two more employees were called to the scene. They told us they did in fact know the Childrens ride was paid for, through the school, but that unless we went to get the physical ticket we could not ride. My husband and I assured the staff we would find the teacher and bring the tickets to the train, to be destroyed, after the ride, if we could be allowed to ride with the rest of the class/other classes from the same school. It was a hard no from the incredibly unfriendly staff members.
We are rule followers, and know rules are in place for a reason. However, there are occasions when businesses should choose good customer service, over such strict policy (with zero explanation as to why this was the policy to begin with). My husband and I had to take 4 crying 6 yr old girls out of the line, trek half way across the zoo, find our tickets, then get back in line for the train.
Aside from our terrible experience with the staff today, there were little to no animals out on display. I'm truly not sure what anyone is paying for with their price of admission these days.
Customer service and experience are clearly dead these days. Such a shame.

I have been going to this zoo since I was a kid. The last time we went was about 7 years ago. I was absolutely astounded that the zoo had no bears, camels, antelopes, etc. The addition of a petting zoo at that time removed a lot of animals, replacing them with farm animals you can see practically anywhere. Today, we took our grandbabies back. I recalled as a kid the Tiger house, numerous primates, hippos, etc. The $18 charge to get in is a complete joke. No polar bears, kodiak bears, grizzly bears, no Hippos, rhinos, camels, just empty exhibit after exhibit. The huge snakes are gone. The gorillas are gone. Most all the primates are gone. The elephant exhibit placed the animals so far away the kids could not find them. Several exhibits were dirty. Food is ridiculously priced. The idea of a zoo has dramatically changed since the days of throwing peanuts to the spider monkeys on monkey island, but people, a Zoo has ANIMALS. And if you are going to hype your zoo with special exhibits, like feeding lorakeets and giraffes, then either OPEN these exhibits or LOWER the prices to reflect this change. As sad as it seems, the largest section of the zoo is called Alabama Wilds and it houses the least amount of any animals. Poorly used space.

We came here with 10 other family members to view the Xmas lights, and had a marvelous time overall.
Being evening, the animals were bedded down; but the light displays were amazing.
The colors and lighting evoked aesthetic images reminiscent of themes from Avatar to Tiffany.
The displays were a delight for all in our group (aged 2 to 74 yr); with a ride on the carousel a real treat for the youngest ones.
The visit here was a nice addendum to our holiday family gathering.

I grew up near one of the world's best zoos. My daughter wanted to go to the Birmingham Zoo while we were in Birmingham - and I almost refused because a couple of inaccurate negative reviews on here. A friend urged me to reconsider, and I'm SO glad I did! This zoo deserves to be ranked as one of the world's best. It is clean - it even smells clean, well organized, and it is easy to see the animals in their beautifully designed habitats. I was left wondering if the negative reviews I read on here were left by trolls or mischief makers of some kind. We had an exceedingly lovely day. I have some physical limitations, and found lots of places to sit and rest, and the walks between exhibits were very doable. I knew from visits to other zoos that many wild animals take afternoon naps - and for the best viewing you want to arrive near opening time while the animals are up and about. Great zoo - I highly recommend!

Experience could be improved by actually having a variety of animals to view and study in their natural habitat. During our stay in Birmingham it was recommended we spend time at the zoo. The zoo is open from 9 to 5. We arrived at 2:30 and paid $20 each for tickets. The layout is very poor and no maps were provided. We walked for miles and 90% of the animals were not to be found. Not only were there no animals but the habitats were FILTHY.
The indoor displays were so dirty you could not see into most of them. The ones you could view most were missing the animals. The Birmingham zoo management should be ashamed to charge entrance fees. If you stay in Birmingham DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE ZOO.

We will be in town for a tournament and will have about 2 hours between games, then be done around 3 oclock. Can we reenter the zoo with our original tickets if we go in the morning, then come back in the afternoon?

Yes you can. I forgot backup batteries for my camera & went back into the parking lot & they let me back in with my original tickets. You're given physical tickets that they can look at & scan.
Can I bring my personal hand walker inside park or do I have to rent one?

When I went the parking was free, however the website should inform you of all fees such as parking and admissions. (I just went to the website and in the Visitor Info section it has all prices, and parking was not listed as an item you'd have to pay for so it does appear to be free)
