Climb your way to see Birmingham

The Nature Center was not open when we were there. Some folks cleaning out the nearby gardens were very helpful in instructing us how to get a parking pass out of the vending machine.
We took the orange trail (Ridge and Valley) and it was a moderate hike. It is deceptively long. Then we went up to the quarry and to the lookout. That trail and the green trail on your left coming down were very badly marked. They need to get out into the woods and do blazes like other places do.
There are no water stops so plan to bring plenty of water with you. It was a warm day but cooler in the trees and we went through 4 16 oz bottles. We also brought a lunch with us. There was a picnic bench near the road 2/3 of the way down the trail.

Solid Hike!

Went here on a wed afternoon and it was a pleasant surprise. This place is somewhat of a conservatory with a membership. If you are not a member there is a $3/person trail fee. I was good to pay it because it is a good cause and a beautiful area. There is a trail map that helps you along. I recommend the quarry trail and then the overlook. Round trip is around 3.0 miles. Perfect for my children. The trail is well maintained and offers scenic views of the valley. If you are in the area I would recommend.

Great hike!

We had a great time exploring Ruffner Mountain this morning and afternoon during our weekend visit to Birmingham! The park is really pretty - and it has numerous trails that you can combine to create hikes of various lengths and difficulties! We hiked the Quarry Trail (1.2 miles) to the Possum Loop Trail (1.8 miles) to the Overlook Trail (0.4 miles) to the Ridge & Valley Trail (1.7 miles) for quite a good hike! All of the trails were ranked moderate difficulty except for the Ridge & Valley Trail, which was ranked difficult. That was pretty accurate - the Ridge & Valley Trail was definitely more challenging than the others we hiked! The trails were well marked and well taken care of (we were there in early February and there were a lot of leaves on the ground which could hide some tree roots, but we didn't have any problems). It was clearly a popular place to hike! We arrived around 10 a.m. on a Sunday, and the parking lot by the Nature Center was about half full; when we left around 1 p.m., the parking lot was full and people were parking on the street that led up to the parking lot! We saw a lot of people hiking - from families with small children to hikers with some pretty serious gear. The park seemed to have hikes/options for everyone! We really enjoyed our hike - great exercise, a great view of downtown Birmingham, and views of the old quarry! Definitely check it out and go exploring!

Really nice place to hike and to take in some scenic views but the trails are so poorly marked that it’s extremely frustrating.

Who knew that you could find such awesome hiking trails in the heart of Birmingham?!? There's little to no water in the park, of which I'm a fan of on hikes, but well marked trails and definitely worth a visit.

Day Hike at Ruffner

-Located on 81st Street So in Birmingham the preserve is an enigma. Set virtually in a neighborhood it contains a variety of hiking trails. None are very long but some are challenging. There are a few interesting destinations, such as; a quarry, an old rock crusher, an old railroad and a couple of overlooks, one has a good view of Birmingham. Part of Birminghams’ mining history. Combine with Sloss Furnace and Red Mountain Park.

Fantastic Challenging Hike

While stuck in Birmingham due to a flight cancellation my wife and I where looking for a nice afternoon hike. Ruffner Mountain turned out to be a great place to hike with winding trails and challenging elevation changes. Well worth the $3 fee. Don't let the seemingly short 14 miles of trials make you skip over this convenient hiking location. The steep inclines will get your heart rate up and the ever changing terrain will keep you from getting bored, Trails changed between pine covered dirt, small gravel, broken rock and granite boulders. Please note even the "Easy" trails include rocks and steps - not stroller friendly and some inclines that will get you working. We did not spend time in the nature center so I cannot comment on that. Staff with whom we spoke were friendly and helpful. Also restrooms in the nature center were clean and well kept. We we be returning to hike some of the more difficult trails in the future.

Late evening hike.

My son and his family met me here late in the evening and we planned on a sunset hike and to stay after dark. When I arrived the park was crowded but the crowds soon dissipated. The office/nature center is rather small and disappointing. And during the winter months the staff leaves at 4:00 pm so plan accordingly. The hike by most standards was moderate, any healthy person should be able to handle it. The sunset was kind of disappointing but that is a matter of chance. We hiked to the quarry and as it was already dark we couldn't see much. The hike in the dark was easy as the trails are well marked. Sad to say this was my first trip here, so I will probably be back to check out some more of the park. There is a lot more to see.

A surprise attraction so close to town

The preserve was a pleasant surprise to find it so close to one of the state's largest metropolitan areas.
I suspect a lot of Alabama travelers aren't aware of the preserve which is almost a well kept traveler's secret.
If you go there is a nice pavilion and the museum is very informative and then there are plenty of trails. I suggest good walking shoes, some water bottles and be prepared for some long hikes depending on the trail you select.
A day visit will give you the opportunity to see a lot of the preserve.
Depending on the season you may find beautiful fall foliage in fall and woodlands bursting with colorful flowers in the spring and summer.

Beautiful scenery and great hike

Decided to do a little hiking on one of the highly recommended trails in Birmingham. Ruffner Mountain is an absolute must as the scenery is breathtaking and there are many different paths/trails that provide different views/experiences for everyone. We took the beginning of the Quarry Trail and decided to turn at the Crusher Trail. I was interested in seeing the old stone crusher that remains in nature along a beautiful creek. The rock formations along the hike are breathtaking and the stone crusher is quite immense. There is even a bat preservation area near it which was also quite interesting. If you enjoy nature, make sure to bring a camera to capture the scenery, however only the eye can truly do so. I would recommend wearing hiking shoes, as parts of the trail can be a bit slippery due to the leaves, slippery rocks and a few fallen trees in the path. I would consider this an easy-moderate hiking level.
