So fortunate to get to walk historic Rickwood Field. Climbed up to the sportswriter's platform on the roof. An amazing historical display inside the building. How often an you walk the trail of history? So thankful.

A piece of American history. Unfortunately, it was closed off, and I’m unsure how you can tour the facilities - it seems you need to sort that in advance. However, hop out of the car and read the sign for a bit of history, and then head over to the fence to check out the old advertisements in the outfield.

The only thing that would have made this better is if we had been able to actually walk inside. The young men who had their start here…. It is just inspiring to stand where they stood.

Great experience for any and all sports fans. Beautiful memories are hear and we were so lucky to meet a wonderful gentleman who asked us to come inside. I could not believe that I walked on the same field and sat in the same dugout as Willy Mays, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and all of the player from the Birmingham Barons and the Birmingham Black Barons.
For any real baseball fan you will be almost in tears the entire time you are at this historic facility. I hope the corporate sponsors and the City of Birmingham continue to support this significant part of America’s history. You should too.

Rickwood Field is an amazing place to visit and it’s FREE! The park is run by a non-profit group of people that obviously love baseball and Birmingham. I got chill bumps when I walked through the tunnel and saw the field. It’s a must see 👍🏼

A must see if you’re a baseball history fan! During our visit to Birmingham to take in the civil rights history, I had read about Rickwood as the oldest professional ballpark, built in 1910. The park originally hosted the Birmingham Barons and the Birmingham Black Barons - and since MLB now (correctly) recognizes the Negro Leagues as a major league, this means Rickwood is arguably the oldest MLB ballpark (though as a Red Sox fan, I need to think this through). Anyhow, I thought we’d only get to drive by the park and take a photo, but instead I walked in and was met by the friendliest people - the gift shop and museum was great. We were taken on a tour of the park - including the roof!! And the locker rooms, dugouts. Great baseball history and an hour very well spent!!

If you like baseball, go here now. If you like history, go here now. If you like talking to people that are genuinely excited and passionate about something that you have an affinity for, go here now. My husband, son and I have now been to 156 ballparks by car. We have seen so much of the country, met amazing people, and learned things we never would have learned without these trips. This past weekend we finally made it to Historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. it is the oldest existing ballpark in the United States, built in 1910. You can smell the history as you linger under the wood and metal grandstand before even making your way to the seats and field. There happened to be a travel ball tournament going on the day we finally visited, which was the perfect way for this family to experience this for the first time: we got to see baseball, but it was still basically quiet, and we could really soak it all in. We were greeted by the head groundskeeper (Jebrelle...sorry if I spelled that wrong!) Jebrelle is one of 2 people that maintain the stadium and grounds, and he does an incredible job. He told us all the nooks and crannies we needed to check out, to walk out to the old concrete home run wall where center field was 478 feet and was excited to see our excitement. Once inside we were overwhelmed with the sense of who had been there and games that had been played and the history that had been lived through there. Segregation, integration, women’s suffrage, it is amazing how much history is encapsulated in this one spot. While lingering in what was the original entry, ticket booths and concessions stands, in the peace and quiet, we met Randy Ferguson, a member of Friends of Rickwood, who proceeded to take us on what was basically our own private tour of the gift shop/museum, old locker room, grandstand…he even took us onto the roof where had an amazing view of the field. Everyone there was so welcoming, and kind and you could tell they loved and appreciated what they did and sharing their stories with us. It was way more than we ever could have imagined our first visit being. Places like this are gems and they are few and far between now. They do not get much funding from anywhere but donations, and when these people are no longer there it is sad to think what might happen to it. So please, spread the word, tell your friends, family, and kids about it, plan a visit (Birmingham was awesome!!) and/or make a donation at rickwood.com and know that you are contributing to keeping a piece of history alive for your kids and your kids’ kids!
We also learned that you can rent the entire ballpark for a day for $500 and have it all to yourself! Bring your kids team to play, get married, celebrate a birthday, renew your vows, watch a movie!
Whatever you do, don’t miss out on this peace of living, breathing history and all it has to offer while it is right here in our own backyards.

What an experience! I went early on a weekday morning hoping for a tour, but upon arrival I saw people on the field. I walked over from the free parking and found a mini-fantasy camp of sorts going on with a few teams and several former Cincinnati Red's baseball players. I was able to watch a bit of the game, take in the sites of the historic field, and even talk to some of the MLB players like Dmitri Young. Fluke event, but the field is worth seeing regardless.

This was on our Historic highlights tour, but we were pretty tired from sightseeing all day and we did not go in. It also appeared that there was going to be some game play as people were arriving and there were players in uniform on the field.it is a very old and historic ballpark and maybe some day we will get to go back and see the inside or maybe catch a game there.

Having been involved in sports, especially baseball, for much of my life over 65 of my 73 years to-date you owe it to yourself to visit Rickwood Field when you are traveling in the area as it is the very last of the original ballparks of that vintage - A true cannot miss oppotunity to be sure.
