This wasn't the type of museum we expected as the map we had just called it a "Slavonija Museum" However the content that had was really good. There were quite a few rooms to see and there was an a lot of information to read. I was expecting the museum to be of a more recent history so I was a little disappointed.

Das moderne, klimatisierte und zweisprachige (kroatisch und englisch) gehaltene Museum erzählt die Geschichte der Architekturfunde rund um Osijek. Es hat in diesem Gebiet sehr viele Funde gegeben und so können alle früheren Zeiten (Bronzezeit, Eisenzeit usw.) mit viel Material gezeigt werden. Eindrücklich waren nachgebaute Hütten und die vielen Schmuckstücke und Werkzeuge der Bronzezeit. Wenn man nicht ein spezieller Fan von Archeologie ist, wird es irgendwann sehr repetitiv und die Ausdauer war bei uns dann nicht so gross (ca. 30 Minuten Aufenthalt).

Housed in a recently renovated and beautiful bildings, with arcades and bright red tiled roof, this museum has a rich collection of historical objects spanning over 2000 years, and including multiple cultures that have taken residence in this part of the world over the centuries.

The Archaeological Museum Osijek is located in Tvrđa, which is the old baroque core of the city. The building which houses that Museum is called the Main Guard Building. It encompasses in fact two sub-buildings structures: the City Guard and the Brožan House. The Archaeological Museum is a part of the Museum of Slavonia which, apart from the stated building also occupies the Magistrates Building, on the side of Trg Sv. Trojstva opposite to that where the Main Guard Building stands, which is the oldest building in Osijek.
The Main Guard Building was constructed at the beginning of the second quarter of the eighteenth century to be destined to serve the needs of the Tvrđa military guard. As a matter of fact, an indication that it was used for military purposes is its massive structure as well as a watchtower with a Moorish-Venetian style dome. The building itself is very nice with its arcades on the ground floor and its robust bell tower including a clock and a terrace rising in the middle of the building façade. The Archaeological Museum in that Building was inaugurated in 2012 after its restoration in 2007.
The exhibition which can be beheld in the Museum concerned is very interesting. It comprehends different items from diverse epochs and cultures, from pottery objects produced some 2.500 years before Christ to keys and other metal working objects from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries. Among other elements, one can observe there fine examples of the Starčevo Culture, which is the first Neolithic population in Slavonia, such as ceramic vessels fired in an oxidising atmosphere and ceramic items of symbolic nature: anthropomorphic figurines, animal images, altars, etc. Besides, there are also in that Museum tools made of animal bones, wood or stone. As regards the last mentioned ones it can be said that in the Neolithic stone remained the only raw material that could be used for making permanent tools for cutting.
The Museum is very illustrative as far as all relevant aspects of the stated cultures are concerned. Everything which can be contemplated in it is highly interesting and most of items are a pleasure at sight. Consequently it’s quite advisable to visit the Archaeological Museum when going to Osijek.

We have paid around 1.5 Euro in visiting the Archeological Museum which was situated in the Holy Trinity Square of Tvrda old town. Many exhibits from Roman period to medieval time could be found there. We could stay longer to see more only if we have sufficient time by then.

In Tvrđa there are two museum worth visiting. Museum of Slavonia and Archeologic museum. Lots of interesting exhibits in archeological musem dating from ancient history till modern times.

The Archaeological Museum was conveniently located for us as we were visiting other sights of Osijek's old town (Tvrda). This museum is the light yellow building fronted with arches and a clock on its tower on one side of the spacious cobbled town square, the Holy Trinity Square. A large sign on the front also helped us to recognize it as a museum. We wanted to see the displays of artifacts found in this region from all of the cultural groups since the Celts that immigrated through here. From the entry we caught a glimpse of tombstones, probably from Roman times, and other broken pieces of stonework. Also from the entry, it was difficult to tell just how large the museum was - a few rooms clustered around the entrance or several floors. As Osijek was our only stop in Croatia - an excursion from our Danube river cruise with Scenic - we didn't have Croatian kunas to pay the admission fee. It was the only attraction that required a fee. Instead of entering, we continued with our walk in Tvrda.

In the centar of old castle (Tvrdja) are few old palaces and one of that becomes Arcehological Museum. You could see beginig of life in this area, Roman period nad medieval time. On the ground part are exhibition space. This permanent part is very nice- nothing specila, but really nice.

Lot of connecting history of Europe and digital movie of migrations. Very educative and interesting place. You can stay for hours and compare.
