Apparently, Joakim Rakovac was kind of a big deal back in the day (i.e., the early 20th century). After the Germans captured Istria during WWII, he urged Istrians to rise up against fascism. (There's more to the story, but Wikipedia explains it better). Anyway, nicely done, and maintained, statue in honor of Rakovac.

A memorial just by the main square, in small park area. We parked our car here so passed by on our way to the center. From the old times reminds of the last world war.

У входа в старый город установлен памятник хорватскому герою - борца с фашизмом. Вокруг покосившиеся некрасивые домики.

I know little of this man. However I urge others to visit his memorial and search for more of the history. Some one with a greater mind than me once said....." it is important that we study history lest we repeat it". The memorial is well kept and an important part if Istrian History. It is situated at the east end of the old town, and worth the few steps it takes to reach.

This is an extremely well-kept historical monument dedicated to the memory of Joakim Rakovac, who was the main organiser of the "People's Liberation Struggle" in Istria and one of the most important people in Croatian history.
He was born on October 14, 1914 in Rakovci, about 10 kilometres from Porec. He protected Porec and Istria against fascism and was killed in a Nazi ambush on January 18, 1945 in the village of Korenici near the Lim Fjord. The Croatian people honour those who fought for independence and he was proclaimed a “People’s Hero” in 1952.
The memorial can be seen in Joakim Rakovac Square, named after him.

Joakim Rakovac, commemorato dal monumento, è stato uno degli organizzatori e dei protagonisti della guerra di liberazione in Istria. Perse la vita in un agguato nazista il 18 gennaio 1945 nel villaggio di Korenici. Molto amato dai croati.

This monument is dedicated to Joakim Rakovac, a local fighter against fascism in Istra. If you visit Poreč, be sure to take a photo of this monument. Joakim and Istrian people deserved a respect !

Если идти от старого города, то чтобы найти рынок надо дойти до памятника, левее его, перейти улицу и повернкть налево. И вот он рынок.
