I did a hiking tour with Guazapa which was definetly one of the best activity I have ever done in El Salvador. I was alone with Manuel, who is a very thoughtful guide. He tells you a lot about history, but also agriculture, plant and animal living in this forest. We saw spider, bat and snake skeleton. He brought his sword to cut any branch on our pathway, and his binocular to observe some birds and the view over Suchitlan and Honduras. We went inside a deep cave the guerilla made and went through the medical camps. My only regret is that I am not fluent in spanish, but I could still understand overall, as French language (my mother tong) is very similiar to Spanish and Manuel knows a little bit of english. The hike lasted 4 hours, but it was more relaxing than extenuous. In terms of level, I would say it's easier than the trek up to santa ana volcano.
At the end Manuel came up to the bus stop with me and wait until my bus arrive. Thank you Manuel.

We are 4 Americans who remember, with great shame, our government's involvement in the Salvadoran civil war in the 1980s. Yesterday we did the Guazapa hike with a young local guide with Guazapa Tours, a local photographer who remembers the aerial bombardments and military intrusions in their area, and Robert of El Gringo Tours. We saw and learned so much about how this part of El Salvador was affected by the civil war, and how the local community is committed to re-building sustainably and ethically. We strongly recommend this informative hike, while supporting an important community program.

It was lovely! The tour was beautiful and very interesting, the horse looked very healthy, the litle museum is cute too and all benefits go to the locals and the projects. Guide Lupe was a very nice, friendly and funny guy full of knowlegde on and interest in basically everything i could think and ask about: history, nature, culture, agriculture, the region, the entire country, the world, politics and football! That was a great bonus!
The biggest surprise to me was that the tour did not only involve horse riding since horses do not make it to the top anymore. Instead we roughly parked the horse halfway and then started hiking. IT was slippery and steep (would not recommend "throw away sneakers" without a proper profile as i was wearing) but soooo worth it!
PS getting in touch with Guazapa was quite a challenge, I first tried through the tourist information office at the square but without success. I then went to El Gringo Tours (in suchitoto) and they called the Guazapa folks and arranged the appointment. I paid at Guazapa. Beware that prices and information on their site are outdated:
- i paid more (35 of 40, can't remember), and that excluded transport
- getting there can be arranged for An extra fee but was easy enough with the local bus if you speak some spanish, just ask and get of at the sign on the picture i included
- as mentioned: it's half horse riding half hiking. The vulano is pretty steep and slippery so pick the right type of shoes:)

Orlando and Manuel were both incredibly welcoming, patient and kind. Despite our terrible Spanish skills they managed to communicate really clearly and patiently and had so many interesting insights into the guerilla side of the war.
I have limited experiences with horses but it was an easy ride and Manuel made sure we were always comfortable.
A really fascinating trip and the perfect guides for the job! Would really recommend to anyone staying in suchitoto.

Very interesting presentation of Salvadorian history. Nice ride up the mountain with most pleasant guide. Much recommended.

The horseback tour in guazapa was recommended by sameer, a very kind person from san salvador. We took of at 6 am to go to suchitoto to have breakfast there and start our horseback tour to the guazapa mountain, where we wanted to know more about the civil war in san salvador. We arrived at 10am by the home of guazapa tours, which is also a free museum from the local community. There we have been welcomend by orlando, the local guide which has been fighting on the mountain for 12 years. He knows everything about the mountain and the civil war and was a very lovely person. It was very important for him that we felt comfortable and it was just totally authentic the whole trip. At first we had a short tour through the museum which is free, but donations are welcomed, as they built it by themselves. Then we took off for the nice horseback tour through the backlands and jungle. It was very impressive. We could go very fast with the horses if we wanted to. But they were also very kind to me as an unexperienced rider. After a stop at the basecamp of the guerillas with very interesting but sad stories we also walked to a lookout point and to some tunnels where they used to hide. Orlando would answer all our questions and it was amazing to be right at tve place where this awful war happened. It was a complete diffrent adventure and that's why we liked it so much. At the end orlandos wife cooked a very delicious soup for us with tortillas etc and my girlfriend is vegetarian so the wife cooked extra something else for her, all ingrediends from their land, and we had more very interestig conversations. We strongly recommend this tour, because all they earn will be spread in their community. It is really a good thing to do!!Please help them to improve their lifes and enjoy the time in the most beatiful part of el salvador.

I'd like to echo all the positive comments from the other reviews and share my experience.
I came down with bad food poisoning at the end of the tour (likely culprit- bus station chicken from a couple of days before- lesson learnt).
Not only did it turn out that our guide Orlando is also a practicing doctor who trained in Cuba (he splits his time between the co-op and shifts at the hospital) but he arranged immediately for some of the other coop members to drive all the way up to the top of the path and collect us and the horses, and they then gave us a lift all the way back to our hotel in town.
I'm so grateful! 4 days later I was much better.
Thank you Orlando and the rest of the team.
Otherwise- beautiful scenery and fascinating experience- it gave a whole new dimension to our experience of El Salvador. Also my other half had previously had a bad experience on a horse but he bonded with his and now is keen to go again- great stuff :-)

Best part of our stay in Suchitoto! Great historical tour, but also very beautiful horseback ride. Highly recommend it. You will want to hire a guide though if you don't speak Spanish as the few local guides are not bilingual. Rene at the Mayan Grouper or Robert at El Gringo (both based in Suchitoto) will do a bilingual tour for around $150. Otherwise the tour with a local guide costs $25/person. Really though, this tour is great and our guide Orlando was wonderful!

Went with a group of 10 other people and this tour was a highlight. I loved hearing about the history of the area as well as taking in my beautiful surroundings. I would do this again in a heartbeat.

Guazapa tours is an amazing local company showing people the sites of Guazapa whilst helping the local community. We did the 4 hour horse ride around Guazapa hill, which cost $20 each and was really interesting. It's a good ride as it is up and down river routes, which were dry when we went in early July. Wilfredo was our guide, one if 36 young people from his village who guide the tours. They rent horses from other locals, therefore spreading the income, and take it in turns to guide. Wilfredo showed us old guerrilla locations in the forest, told us what his parents had told him about the war and explained how people earn a living from the land today - he was very knowledgeable. The ride ended with a beautiful view across El Salvador to the mountains of Honduras. would highly recommend, great value for money on well looked after horses.
