Tagged along with four ladies in our group to a Global Mamas batik session. Was not quite sure what to expect but it far exceeded my expectations. Mary was great is showing and explaining the process. She definitely has skills. With some pointers we all took turns creating our own unique patterns. Once done we all chose colours with each piece being quite different!!! Think my creation will evolve into a shirt!
Just loved that it was outdoors under a canopy in among homes in neighbourhood bustling with life.
Would do this again in a heartbeat!!!!

Global Mamas does amazing work, made it very easy to schedule, and were extremely flexible. We did a cooking class and got to choose our own food. We had an incredibly fun night with Esi, learning, cooking, eating, and dancing - one of the highlights of the trip.

Me and the seven other people in my group who traveled to Cape Cost from Accra were so glad that we paid the 82 cedis in order to be trained by a local woman and her team in the art of Batik making. We were outdoors and sheltered under a tent as we were 1st welcomed warmly then given instructions. Then we gained hands on trying as we printed designs of our own choosing onto 2 yards of fabric. I asked for three yards and was willing to pay extra.
Then we had to turn our material over and over for 20 minutes in a basin of hot water. There after her team took over and the end results of what we made was beyond beautiful. My husbands masterpiece is already on our dining table and I am taking my material to a seamstress to be sown into a dress.
This is a must do if you are in the area.

I’d really like to give this place 3.5 stars … because despite the middle and end of our cooking class in Cape Coast (the smells as we cooked, and the taste of the food afterward, were incredible!), we were disappointed with the overall customer service.
Perhaps we started the class in a skeptical mood, which didn’t help. We waited for a long time at the Global Mama’s shop for our class to start and no-one gave us any information as to what was happening. A woman finally arrived — no hello and no introduction — and she told our driver to take us to a secondary location.
The location was a small roadside restaurant in the center of town — very authentic, though we waited and waited whilst the woman continued to serve customers and, well, basically ignored us. There was also incredibly loud music playing and at first we couldn’t hear anything the woman (our instructor? — who knew at that point, still no-one told us what was happening…) was saying.
Finally the music was turned down and the woman began to bring ingredients over to the table at which we were sitting. At no point did she introduce herself or ask our names, despite us being the only people in the class.
The class itself was good, though the woman did most of the work — we really only chopped a few veggies and stirred and fanned the boiling pot of oil. This was disappointing as we were hoping for a more hands-on experience.
Note also there’s no toilet at the restaurant for customer use.
At the end we sat down to eat our delicious meal, asked the woman’s name (she was nice enough, just never made the effort to connect with us), and requested the recipes for the meal we’d made. She smiled and said “Absolutely!”. She sent us a copy of *a* recipe, but not the exact food we’d made. I followed up via WhatsApp and she promised to forward the additional information. Two weeks later, I’m still waiting — she hasn’t responded to my requests, though also hasn’t hesitated to send me random, completely unrelated videos via WhatsApp (very strange).
As I said, the food was amazing — but unfortunately the customer service not so much.

Spent a wonderful morning with Mavis, one of the Global Mamas, learning about batik and creating my own piece of cloth. This is a great way to spend time with local people and to learn about their art and their desire to provide more opportunity for their families.

We had a wonderful experience learning to batik from Mavis! We called the morning that we planned to be in Cape Coast and they were so kind to set up the workshop for us on only a few hours notice.
Mavis met us at the Global Mamas office (where we paid) and then we followed her to her shop, about a 5 minute walk. She gave us stools to sit on under a shaded tent and told us about the process and what all is involved. We each got to select our favorite symbol to stamp our own fabric in the workshop. She was patient with us throughout the process - it requires practice and talent to do well and I have new respect for the artistry! We each came away with our own piece of batik fabric at the end. Mavis’ explanations were great and the kids in the area entertained us as we worked.
It is a labor intensive process and takes some time to go through each step to allow the dye to absorb and set, and then to remove the wax and dry the print. Mavis was gracious to speed the process along for us because we had less time than the recommended 3 hours. I would strongly recommend allocating plenty of time (that’s why they recommend 3 hours) to ensure you aren’t rushing the process.
It was a very hot day, so I recommend bringing water. Part of the process includes boiling water so it was smoky (just based on the direction of the wind) which is to be expected. If you plan to head onward to the airport after (like we were) I recommend scheduling it at a time so you can go back to the hotel and shower after.

Had a wonderful experience at Global Mamas earlier this week. My wife and I booked a cooking class for 2 PM after our tours of the castles. Showed up a bit early and they accommodated us. Mama Essi’s kitchen is a short 10 minute walk away from the store front. We were led there by a kind woman named Susie who chatted with us along the way.
Essi was fantastic. She taught us to make Palava Sauce with boiled yams and Red Red with fried plantains. Both were SO good! At the end she provided the recipe and we feel certain we will be making this at home :-)
Highly recommend this experience.

The cooking class was well organized, Evi picked us up and we went to her restaurant and started preparing the ingredients to cook RedRed and Palaver Sauce with cooked Yam on a mobile african stove with charcoal. It was really fun, and the dishes were delicious and so tasty. If we stayed longer we tried another workshop for more dishes. Prices were reasonable. We would definitely recommend this to everyone staying in Cape Coast!

My partner and I took our 7 and 4 year olds for drumming and batik making. We had a fantastic experience - the lessons were in beautiful settings with skilled, patient and encouraging teachers. We actually love the batik we created, and the videos of my husband and son working hard on drum skills is priceless (it was challenging!). Also, the class duration is flexible, which we really appreciated as we needed to head back to Accra. Well done and thank you, Global Mamas! We hope to be back one day. Also- the store is lovely, we were a bit rushed but I would have liked to spend much more time there to select some clothes- they were beautifully displayed with a great range of styles and sizes.

Ghana can be a little hard to navigate or find things to do, so planning a day with Global Mama's is a great choice. We ported in Takoradi, which was about a 2 hour drive to Cape Coast, but worth it. The building was a little hard to find, but luckily they were super flexible on time so it all worked out.
We did a Batik fabric workshop which was great. We got to meet some families and moms and work alongside them. We got to make our own fabrics while hanging out with the community and we got to keep the fabrics!
We also did an African dancing and drumming workshop which was so fun and the perfect amount! The teachers were very nice, patient and helpful.
In between the two workshops we got unexpectedly hungry and Alice took us to a local restaurant which was great and so kind.
After all this, we ran over to the Cape Coast Castles which just down the street! So location was ideal.
Overall this was the highlight of all our days in Ghana and I highly recommend everyone pick 1-2 workshops!
