It was a disaster.
As we saw that the weather was very bad we called to see if it would be cancelled. We were told no, that everything was fine.
We left with the boat raining and with a lot of waves so we could not stop at any of the points we had to visit.
We could not enter Maya Bay either, which they could tell by calling the ranger there.
Despite the conditions we were told to kayak, we saw that it was dangerous, we were all seasick and felt like throwing up so we asked to be taken back to the port.
It was also dangerous to get off the boat with so much swell.
In similar situations they should cancel the excursion and not make people go, making them waste their time, since in the end they lose the whole day, and money (from the excursion, travel to the meeting point and back to the hotel...) and putting people in danger.
They refunded part of the money paid but we are not happy, they should have cancelled.
It was a mess.

I was fortunate enough to be in Thailand for a work trip, and thought I would take the chance to tick something off the bucket list - Maya Bay.
At first I explored day trips from Phuket, but dismissed this due to the crowds and the rush. I then thought about staying on Koh Phi Phi and getting the early long-tail boat out to Phi Phi Leh first thing in the morning. By chance, I stumbled across the Maya Bay Sleepaboard and decided this was just what I was looking for.
We arrived in Phuket the day before, and spend the night exploring Phuket Town (some of our group stayed out a little later than they should, but hey, they still made the speedboat in the morning). We took the 11am speedboat across to Phi Phi Don and arrived with time to take a walk around the island, grab a coffee and an ice cream before making our way to the Maya Bay Sleepaboard office where we met the rest of the guests - some who were staying overnight and others that would return to the island later.
After a while we made our way to the boat - first impressions: she (it) was beautiful! We met our host Liam, were set free to explore the boat, and we set off for Koh Phi Phi Leh.
It wasn't long before the drinks started flowing (100THB cocktails... lookout) and the fun began. We anchored just off of Viking Cave and a few of us took the water to snorkel, the more adventurous jumped off the roof of the boat.
Then the moment I had waited for - with everyone back on board we continued onwards towards Maya Bay. The hoards of daytrippers were all lining up to get back on their boats just as we arrived, which pretty much meant we had the place to ourselves. I had played out this moment in my mind a million times, running onto the sand and taking in those towering limestone cliffs - the same as Leo did 24 years earler, and wow - it did not disappoint. I don't really have words for how beautiful it looked in real life, and that first glance is one that I will never forget.
After around 45 minutes it was time to leave Maya Bay, so we returned to the boat, which putted around to the entrance to the bay. A few of us swam, a few of us jumped again, and I jumped on a kayak with a new-found friend from Brazil. The sun setting in the one direction, Maya Bay in the other - again, I have no words for this.
Shortly after sundown dinner was served, a variety of Thai curries including a vego one for me (appreciated). The drinks continued, and the music went on. A pirate party ship parked nearby for sunset headed back to Koh Phi Phi Don and we had the place to ourselves (other than a few private yachts anchored around the place).
More drinks... that $4 cocktail is too hard to turn down!
Once it was sufficiently dark, we were called down to the bottom floor where we all put on lifejackets (backwards and around your legs, like a nappy) and jumped into the pitch black water, lit only by the lights from the boat. Once we were all in, the boat lights went out and we were in total darkness... almost. Placing your head underwater, you could see little flashes of light where you moved your hands - almost like interactive stars. It wasn't the bright blue-green wave of light that I saw in the movie, but it was still pretty cool - especially after a few* drinks.
After the plankton session, those that were not sleeping on board said แล้วพบกันใหม่ and the rest of us continued on with those pesky 100 baht cocktails. We took the dinghy to a small beach inside the bay (but outside the exclusion zone) and parked on the shore where we had some good chats and some amazing stargazing. We then jumped back in the dinghy (narrowly avoiding a seasnake that slithered past a few legs) and went back to the mothership.
The night gets a little blurry for me from there, but the next fully coherant part is me waking up on the top deck, lit only by moonlight. I had taken myself to bed, but forgot the sleeping bag (a thin one, just to keep the windchill off). A quick walk downstairs to grab one, then back up to bed. I remember seeing the moon just creeping over the towering cliffs above, I remember the gentle rocking of the boat, I remember smiling and then I was out again.
I woke up to sunlight creeping across the sky from behind the bay, and along with the rest of the guests, we slowly nursed our sorry heads back to reality with a strong coffee and some breakfast. The boat kicked back to life and we were heading back to the pontoon to enter Maya Bay - which again we would have to ourselves.
It looked different in the morning, the tide was out, there were no footprints - but most importantly the sun lit it up in a completely different way. It was peaceful. Enormous sea eagles soared over the cliffs, the gentle waves rolled in, and if you looked carefully you could see juvenile black tip reef sharks swimming in the shallows. This was a more sirene take on the beach, and I am so thankful that I got to experience this place in two different lights.
It was back to the boat for the final cruise to Koh Phi Phi Don, with one final stop outside Monkey Beach. We anchored just off shore, a few swam the hangover away, I again decided to take the kayak with a few others. We paddled close to shore but the monkeys were well and truly resting (the tourists also weren't there to torment just yet). Back on board, it was time to go back to the island.
The group caught up for one last coffee, exchanged details and said our goodbyes before we jumped back on a speedboat for Phuket.
For anyone thinking of doing this tour, DO! I cannot speak highly enough of the crew, the hosts, even the yoga mattress beds were fine. If I am lucky enough to be back in Thailand, I will 100% do it again.

We had the most perfect and memorable experience. Our guide "Cream" & his team went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed every minute of it!!
Every stop was unique & beautiful. First we enjoyed the snorkeling & saw some lovely coral and fish. The views of Maya bay was breathtaking. the sunset kayaking was relaxing & it was super exciting to swim with the plankton!
Our guide was very informative and always helpful at all the stops. We had unlimited water and cool drinks on board. We are vegetarians and the crew made sure to cook a separate meal for us - the rice, thai curry and vegetables were delicious!!
The boat was clean and spacious and the dinner on the upper deck was a unique experience :)

Such an amazing experience! Going to sleep right under the stars and waking up to the sunrise and a view on an empty Maya beach, swimming with the bioluminescent planktons, snorkeling, everything was perfect from start to finish!
Big thanks to the whole super fun crew and especially to Alex, our guide❤️

Dear Maya Bay Sleepaboard team,
This journey was excellent !
After spending 9 days in Thailand and 9 days in Vietnam, I can say that the journey with you was the best activity !
I would love to do it again and will advice my friends to do it if they may come in Thailand.
Very good atmosphere onboard, some very nice guys who worked there, with who I could laugh a lot ! All the guides could answer our questions.
Let say only fact that was a little bit "disappointed" but also à very funny moment in the other hand... it was the fluorescent plankton. It was a bit chaotic with everyone wearing the life veste from the legs and only staying all at the same place around a rope in the water for security limit. We all kicked each other wirh our legs and all excpected to see more the fluorescent plankton. But again, I had to laugh so much that it was also a good experience !
Thanks a lot for those 2 days onboard and the night.

You have to do this trip and stay over night. Firstly you snorkel, on to Maya Bay, where you have to take the shot from ‘The Beach’ when the sun is setting. After its dinner at Maya Bay from the seaward side. Snorkel and see bio-essent plankton then time to dance party into the night. Sleeping on the top deck looking up at the stars and then waking up to a beautiful pink sunrise on the water with towering cliffs above you. Just so beautiful. We also got to go to Maya Bay again one of the first on the beach that morning. Monkey Bay snorkeling was so clear that day. So many memories. The Maya Bay Team were so much fun and nothing was a problem.

Short version: Despite the promising reviews, my experience with Maya Bay Tours' Sunset trip was disappointing. The staff was rude, and the promised itinerary was not followed: we had only a single stop at peak time at Maya Bay.
Long version:
Despite reading glowing reviews, my personal experience with this trip was far from positive. I had booked a Sunset Cruise with Maya Bay Tours, but problems arose even before departure. As the sole participant in the Sunset cruise, I was informed that three others on board would be staying overnight, therefore they will send a longtail boat for my return journey. I expressed my concern, as one of the primary reasons for choosing this trip was to avoid long-tail boats, which had left me soaked on previous occasions. After some negotiation, they agreed to provide a larger boat.
The itinerary included stops at the Viking Cave and Pileh bay, which unfortunately did not happen. No explanation was given for skipping these stops, and when we inquired, the guides attributed it to weather conditions but no substitute stop was made. When we pressed for clarification, the guides suddenly seemed to lose their English proficiency.
The sole stop on this trip was Maya Bay, where we arrived at 16.00, contradicting their claim of arriving after others had left. ("As we arrive the day-trippers will be leaving and we will be left with our own paradise so you are free to explore whilst the sun goes down.") We have been told that we also need to leave as the park closes at 17.00, well before sunset. Expressing my dissatisfaction was met with disregard from the guides. From this point I was ignored, the guides selectively offered snorkels and fruits to others, and in the evening after getting a drink I was immediately urged to return with the other boat in an aggressive manner, without the courtesy of a polite request to finish the drink within a few minutes and then leave.
During the return journey, the tour guide refused to engage with me, not even saying goodbye. Seeking validation, I consulted other agencies on Phi Phi. They confirmed that skipping all stops without substituting another ones was more then unusual. Maya Bay Tours' false advertising, coupled with outrageous customer service, sets a disappointing standard. If you're willing to pay a premium for partial and rude service, this company is for you. You have been warned.

By far one of the most stunning and memorable experiences we had in all of Thailand, especially in the islands! The food was amazing, the drinks were free/cheap, and the family running the boat were so kind and made us feel like a part of their community. We already miss our time on the boat and are so grateful we have so many pictures and videos to remember the experience! As the website says, don’t expect the best sleep of your life, but do expect one of the best nights of your life full of adventures and good vibes.

Our family of 5 had the best time with the crew from Maya Bay Sleepaboard. It was such a fun night. The night swimming with bioluminescent phytoplankton was a real thrill and something we will always remember. This tour was a real highlight of our trip and is highly recommended.
