One has to buy a camera permit, security of course. But for a few hours, a beautiful building, extraordinary art and exhibits. A small area to buy a drink. Nice grounds. Even if art isn't your thing, there is something for everyone to see.

I nearly missed added a review for this as I was looking under the old name of Prince of Wales museum and hadn't realised they'd changed it. No matter, I certainly would recommend visiting here. It is often overlooked but is, I think, a hidden gem, of this vast city.
There are a wide range of different exhibits to browse at your leisure, from ancient temple carvings to textiles to homewares, hunting artefacts and everythng in between. A nice mix of things rather than other museums that can be quite specific. I especially liked the intricately carved weapon handles and hunting flasks and to see them close up. You can take photos as you go, no restrictions.
Can certainly spend a few hours here as you discover further side rooms down little passages and the gardens are also stunningly well kept. Good toilets too!

Time well spent. Great artefacts and the natural history part was really good. Went midweek so wasn’t too crowded.

Very Impressive exterior , unfortunately , like many of Mumbai's historic structures , partially under repair. Great for the eventual result but frustrating if you want a ' photo without scaffolding in it.
Pleasant gardens to the front with some sculptures. The ticket booth is to your left as you enter the main gates.
On entering the museum you will find yourself in a beautiful circular , galleried area with exhibition galleries leading off & a staircase to the upper floors.
No a/c but some ancient metal fans on stands belt out at a powerful rate.
There was a fabric exhibition on at the time of my visit which was very worthwhile & interesting.
There is a children's museum & galleries of coins , jewellery , Temple carvings , Himalayan artefacts & much more.
Also a gallery of collectables from across the world.
I only spent a couple of hours here , having visited in the past but twice as long is probably needed. However , I doubt my concentration would extend that long so maybe 2 visits would be better.

First of all hats off to the ministry of culture who has adopted many practices like the ones they do in Europe and USA. These include-
Having an audiobook tour with numbers so that one can put their number on a (Walkman kind of) device and get to know about the statue who made it where was it discovered and all. One has many options and I got the whole tour for 150 rupees (1.7 USD) for Indians. This includes an entry to the museum and an audiobook tour. I would recommend going on a Monday Wednesday of Friday as there is a tour guide on those days who give you a tour for free!
Having police security-
I have seen many people in museums earlier who touch open statues and do things like fiddling that can even damage the statue. They have police or security guards in every gallery who ensure that one can enjoy history while preserving it.
The museum was awesome and very value for money. There was very little crowd with 6-7 people at max in one gallery (The most populated one) There are some very underrated galleries I recommend.

2. Himalaya- The entry has a really big and elegant statue. It shows Ladakhi and Tibets culture in a very organised manner such as paintings etc.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya museum houses very nice collections, but now as large as I would expect from the country’s population size. I was told that the majority of India’s ancient relics and buildings have not been preserved for future generations to view. That said, I did enjoy seeing the pieces in this museum. Well worth a two hour visit.

Fondé au début du XXème siècle, l'ancien musée du Prince de Galles est situé en plein cœur de South Mumbai et mérite le détour, tant pour son architecture anglo-indienne que par la richesse de ses collections.
L'entrée est fixée à 700 roupies pour les visiteurs étrangers et offre l'accès à de nombreuses galeries de peintures, de textiles, d'orfèvrerie, de joaillerie ou encore de sculptures d'anciens temples et sites sacrés. Comptez une bonne heure, voire deux heures pour le parcourir dans son intégralité.
Lors de mon passage, beaucoup de salles étaient fermées pour restauration / amélioration, mais cela n'enlève rien au plaisir de visiter ce musée, de loin le plus entretenu et avec la meilleure scénographie parmi ceux que j'ai parcourus en Inde, notamment à Chennai et Calcutta.
Mention spéciale pour l'exposition temporaire "When Indian flowers bloomed in distant lands" (jusqu'au 15 mars 2023) qui présente un éventail spectaculaire du savoir-faire indien avec des textiles rares tels que de superbes chintz et des châles du Cachemire, destinés aux riches familles aristocratiques et royales d'Europe dès le XVIème siècle. Sans oublier des tissus à destination de l'Indonésie, des fragments de Sarasa prisés durant l'ère du Japon féodal ou encore des textiles patola pour les rajas et les sultans d'Asie du Sud-Est.
Une véritable émotion de voir la finesse et la beauté intactes de ces œuvres qui ont entre 200 et 400 ans. Un événement à ne pas manquer !

This has to be one of the most fulfilling museum I have ever gone to.I loved it the art , the currency, the fabric ,the woman appreciation section, the religious bit , the sculptures I can go on and on .One needs like a 5 hours there .I learnt alot and I appreciate Indian culture and the work done to preserve the history. This should be a must visit if in mumbai .

Wonderful museum filled with gorgeous art and learned so much about the history of India. Really enjoyed the coin collection, but also enjoyed the architecture of the museum as well. Just a heads up - the building does not have air con in case you were looking for a respite from the Mumbai heat.
