We recently came back from the 7 day journey "Maharashtra Splendor. I have been to India 7 times and this was the first time I wasn't ready to leave. From the moment we arrived at the station to the moment we said our farewells we felt like royalty. The staff are definitely on their A game. Attentive, polite and smiling throughout the week. We (my mom and I ) had the Presidential suite so I will say having a bigger room, 2 bathrooms, a personal valet (thank you Kunal!), a private car and private guide probably made the tour that much better. I have read reviews talking about the rocking and rolling of the train while traveling. I am sure it can be disturbing to some but for both my mom and I we found it enjoyable as it rocked us to sleep. I am not sure how the chefs cooked in such a small galley but somehow they were able to make the most delicious food. Everyday we visited a different city and were met at the platform by either a local musical group or a local traditional welcome. The cars and guides were there waiting to whisk us off to our adventure for the day. We would return each day to Raman and Ashish handing out cold towels and drinks with of course big smiles. The nights were left for drinks in the lounge, games and/or reading in the library and dinner. Don't get me wrong we did experience a few hiccups- Ac didn't work perfectly, and the smell of fuel one night... but hey, this is India. It is not a perfect country however it is rich with culture, warm and welcoming people, and though may seem chaotic at times, it flows with grace. This trip is a must do for those who want to explore many stops in India, in a short period of time, without having to pack and unpack everyday, in style and luxury. You will not be disappointed! We will be back for another journey for sure! Special thank you to Sanjeev and Aditi for making the trip run so smoothly.

As you board the Deccan, you get the feeling of a genuine welcome and it never goes away during your 7 day journey. After each day’s tour, you felt you were coming home.
Exceptional team at all levels. From the well executed tours and guides(thanks Aditi) to the superb and courteous service in the restaurant and bar which would shame many 5 star hotels. OK, the menu was a little limited but always good quality and tasty..how the chefs achieved anything in the space available was a surprise! Thoughtful touch of a paramedic on board gave a further nuance of being looked after (personally didn’t need him; though some did, top guy Faizal, was with us on all excursions)
OK, the bedroom was small, comfortable but really needs some TLC to bring it up to a better standard. No ironing facilities..an omission. Our butler ever eager to help..
Btw, and probably not in your remit to change, the visits to “craft” events and the pressurised sales pitches were low points..😡
So many mentions about the comfort of the ride..yes..hurtling through India during the night can be very rock n’ roll. Recommend earplugs, eye mask and a big slug of Sula red at dinner..that should work😉. Bollywood night a blast💥..a happy, farewell celebration.
So memorable, exhilarating, safe and absolutely enjoyable !
Team Deccan take a bow..your service offer is better than the Orient Express..and they’re not bad😂..
Thank you so so very much👏🏻👏🏻

Relaxing this is not ... Amazing it is!
If you are someone looking for a week watching countryside speed past with a G&T in your hand THIS IS NOT FOR YOU!! If you are looking for the opportunity to experience some of the most memorable sights, sounds and smells whilst being carefully looked after this would be your cup of tea (chai of-course!). The rooms are not massive ( I would recommend the twin bed option so the space is focused in the middle) but this is a train after all. Any lack of space is made up for by well designed cupboards and an always attentive valet ( Loceis was ours and I don’t know when he slept - he was always there with a smile and cuppa). The train travels at night so sleeping can be a challenge- but this is a week about experiences not snoozing. Organisation from the Deccan ( and Riviera Travel team) were perfect - drinking water at every turn, lovely coaches, amazing lunches and opportunities you would never find on your own.
Service and food on the restaurant could not be faulted and the opportunity to eat anytime between set times worked perfectly - meaning there was never long waits or crowding.
Other than one day ( Jaipur) which was too long and had two ‘selling opportunities’ too many I would change nothing about the week. The whole experience was truly unforgettable
In my opinion everyone should experience this at least once in their life.

I would recommend this trip for the less adventurous among you as it is very clean, safe and you are well catered for. However, the rail network in India is far from modern or advanced. The tracks are very uneven and the noise and rocking motion whilst travelling at night can be too much for some, especially if you have a bed by the window/outside wall as this exaggerates any movement. Also, there are no verandas from which to watch this incredible country pass by, as you board the train early evening as there is not much to do after dinner (which is really rather excellent by the way). I did go into the galley to see for myself the hygiene standards and I can honestly say that they are as good as you can possibly get. Everything is scrubbed down in boiling water and caustic EVERY day!! The staff were also an absolute delight, with nothing being too much trouble.

We joined the Deccan odyssey in Mumbai and spent nine days on the train doing a circular trip to the caves, temples, palaces, museums, heritage sites, the beach and back to Mumbai. We had a great time and really saw India both good and bad. We got a real insight into the country. The staff on the train couldn’t have been more helpful and the food, to say the the kitchen was so small, was excellent and varied. The only problem we had was with the travelling and TRYING to sleep as the train was moving( it felt as though we were on a deeply rutted road. There again, that was all part of the experience!!! The excursions were well organised and informative and there was a paramedic travelling with us should we need medical help ( I DID need it and he was very professional so the I soon recovered. I would recommend this to anyone who wanted to get an insight into India and I would definitely do their other trips in other parts of India.

We’ve just returned from a three week tour of India to coincide with our 35th wedding anniversary. For me it is a country I know well, for my wife, her first experience of the sub-continent. I have always used the best travel company in India, Cox &Kings, and they delivered a superb programme based in quality, delivery and exceeding expectations. Ultimately the icing on the cake was, and is, the truly luxurious Deccan Odyssey train. I have done several world famous luxury trains but The Deccan Odyssey trumps them all by a distance. Do it! You won’t regret it.

We traveled at a leisurely pace from Delhi to Mumbai, an extraordinary week on one of the world's most luxurious trains - what a great way to tour India, with guided tours of many major monuments and endless new experiences. We settled on this journey after seeing a TV news-segment about it, and it was even better than the TV cameras had made it appear. Those cameras provided a good representation of the welcoming ceremonies as we traveled from city to city, but couldn't capture the sheer +delight+ of being on the train, with the many team members straining every sinew to be sure we were royally cared-for. Expert tour-guides, stunning monuments, tolerant camels, great cuisine, and some fascinating insights into India's history, culture and people - Incredible India!

We took the Deccan Odyssey through Maharashtra and to the Ellora and Ajanta temples carved into the rock faces of steep cliffs. The train went as far south as Panjim in Goa stopping every day for exciting excursions in some places quite off the beaten track and very delightful. The train itself was spectacular! The cabins were a good size with all the amenities you could wish for, a valet on hand to attend to your every need, and the most amazing 5* food every day. There were good choices for vegetarians and the staff would go out of their way to cook something just for you if needed. Along with a bar, library and hairdressers, there was even a gym on the train. The whole trip was perfect. I just wish it had been longer!

Hi need to know if motion of train causes any problems when you are eating/sleeping how fast does it go??

Slept fine (with ear plugs!) Rocking motion was quite nice, remember sleeping in a moving car when you were a kid? The train never goes above around 50-60mph. The dining experience was superb and never a problem! It's fantastic, enjoy yourself.

I am concerned about falling ill. Is the water on board filtered and safe to clean teeth and wash face? Is it wise to avoid eating and or drinking off the train? Is there a charge for using the doctor and what happens if I fall prey to dreaded Delhi Belly?
RKirby Art🏄♂️

The water is filtered. Eating off the train is taken in high quality hotels. The food on the train offers a mix of Indian and international cuisine which is of a high standard. The paramedic is part of the Deccan team and accompanies each daily tour. He helped several passengers. I think mostly for dehydration/ upset stomachs. One person did go to hospital for a day as a further precaution. The traveler may have had to pay for that. I don’t know. Don’t be put off India. Its a fantastic country and the train is a truly marvellous way to see it.
Do I need any injections for the Heart of India Tour on the Deccan Oddyssey?

Are there laundry facilities onboard and also can a suitcase (not an overnight bag) be taken into the cabin?
RKirby Art🏄♂️

They have a laundry service, just ask on which day they collect it. It is delivered back the same day. Yes, we had two quite large suitcases and they were stored underneath one of the beds( we had twin rooms). Tip, we always use packing cubes and on this occasion, they were invaluable in organising clothing as storage space is limited in the bedroom. Can not recommend this train enough for its continuous, genuine welcome by the staff which made our journey so memorable..

Dear TA users - am trying to plan a trip on Deccan Odyssey and am finding it quite difficult to pin down the correct website! For example, the website listed on this TA forum is not the website listed in Lonely Planet and there is also a myriad of other variations of "thedeccanodyssey", "deccan-odyssey-india", etc. There are also ever so slight variations of the itineraries being circulated by these different website operators. Can anyone tell me if there is an official website and if not, which travel agent are official representatives? Thank you.

We used Hidden Treasures of India. Wonderful tour company that we have used 5 times. They not only booked our train experience but the hotels on either end, excursions with private guides, and car service. Sheesh is great and we highly recommend him and his company.

Would you say that this journey is suitable for somebody in a wheelchair? I use a small active-user chair as I can't walk due to an injury, but I can stand and transfer to other seating easily. One issue I have noticed with many overseas trains is that you climb into them rather than via a floor level platform as in the UK. What is the situation with this train.
Did you ever get the feeling that staff were constantly looking for tips, or that you were left in peace? I am fundamentally against tipping for my own reasons and expect that such things should be included in the fare, therefore I would not enjoy a trip where there is an expectation to hand over money directly. What is the position here.
I don't normally drink alcohol when in Asia but am occasionally tempted. Are bar prices reasonable, or consistent with being a captive audience and thus high?
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Peter, I'm just back from the Delhi to Mumbai trip on the Deccan Odyssey and can tell you that we had one fellow passenger in a wheelchair who was very well assisted by the onboard and daily off board tour staff. The train has a dedicated carriage with modified cabins. I'd recommend you talk to your travel agent, or contact the DO office direct to discuss your requirements and their facilities. Individual tipping is actually discouraged onboard, with a collection box made available in the library car at the end of the journey for those passengers who wish to show their appreciation. This is entirely discretionary and the total gets divided between all members of the staff. Can't remember what the bar prices were like - but our band of merry travellers drank it dry of gin! It's a fabulous journey - I highly recommend it.

Just wondering what to wear for dinner. Some advice states formal dress but all pics seem to be smart casual. Any advice will be much appreciated. We travel November this year.

Smart casual is very suitable. Shorts are not really acceptable for dinner. Great trip by the way. We loved it!
