The beauty and charm of the neighborhood with it's historical homes and numerous churches led me to believe that I would not see a synagogue, and then I stumbled upon Temple B'nai Sholom. I met a friendly man bringing in donuts... it was Friday so maybe for Shabbat. The architecture was stunning and I wish I could have spent some time inside.

There's a state landmark sign outside the temple explaining it's the oldest Reform Judaism synagogue in Alabama. Inside, a display case holds some historic artifacts. You don't have to be Jewish to enter.
Apart from the historic building, I got to attend Rosh Hashanah services there during my vacation. Several people approached me during oneg to introduce themselves -- good ol' Southern hospitality at work :-).
