Dropped in to this local flower, pet, cricket, walnut and general life supplies market as part of a city tour. Many stalls/shops just sell crickets as pets or for fighting on which gambling is based...fascinating culturally. Lots of birds in very small cages along with cats, dogs and rabbits....not a place for UK standard pet lovers. Also lots of stalls selling polished walnuts which are used for hand massaging...again fascinating.

Si vous aimez les animaux ou êtes sensible, ce n’est pas un endroit pour vous. Des centaines de criquets que l’on peut acheter pour les faire combattre, des oiseaux et autres animaux entassé dans des petites cages.
Je ne me permettrais pas de juger les cultures locales mais c’est clairement quelque chose qui ne serait pas permis en Europe de l’Ouest.
Cela reste un endroit où l’on ne voit que peu de touriste

When I go to large cities, one of my goals is to visit both public aquariums and tropical fish stores. This location houses many types of birds in small cages, many goldfish, koi, turtles, and a few varieties of tropical fish. The selection of fish is limited but that becomes a moot point as you walk through the small stalls housed in a large warehouse. The closet sized shops often have few customers, but as you enter and attempt to greet the proprietor, expect them to barely acknowledge you at best. They are well aware you are a tourist and have no intention of a purchase, since you most likely will not be able to take a live fish, birds, turtles, or crickets home. If you say "thank you" in English or Chinese, do not be surprised if your existence is ignored as they turn their head or continue to watch a movie on their
phone. Perhaps it is bad luck for them not to sell you something. If you are curious to visit this fish/bird mart, remember that "service" is not in their vocabulary, I am a senior Chinese (American) and was surprised at the way they respond to my presence. If you go, do not take it personally; it is in their culture.

I rated this very good for the interest factor. This is the market to go to if you want to buy a cricket for fighting (gamblers can bet on the outcome of 2 crickets fighting!). They are stored in little tin cans and the prospective buyer can tickle the crickets with a thin fine stick to see if they "fight or flight". Some of the crickets are priced at RMB200! There are also crickets that are bought to make noise - a natural alarm clock as such, and they are noisy. People also buy little crickets in boxes as pets! The market also has birds - both for beauty and voice. And there are other pets such as turtles, fish, hamsters, rabbits, squirrels and kittens. Didn't see any dogs. Conditions for the furry pets are cramped, but the animals looked in reasonable condition. Not sure about the "flower" in the title of the market - didn't see any by the time we were there in the afternoon.

As the nearby Dongtai Road market is now closed we popped over the road to what sounded like a quaint Chinese market, but were appalled at the animal cruelty on display.
There were hundreds of fish crammed into small tanks, birds in cages not much bigger than themselves, insects in jars, and other wretched sights.
My daughter left in tears, so bad was the cruelty. Save yourself the horror and avoid this horrible market.

While we also heard mixed reviews about this place, we decided to visit and see for ourselves. It was a bit difficult to find and I had to ask lots of people for directions, but it turns out the easiest way to get there is to take exit 5 at the Laoximen metro stop. The market itself was very interesting - lots of different bugs, flowers, birds, and small animals for sale. It was a different side to Shanghai I had never seen before. However, there were lots of cats and dogs crowded in small cages which was very unsettling to see. I did not witness any other animal creulty as in other reviews but I would not suggest coming here if you are easily upset by this kind of environment.

When I viewed a photo of a common practice at the market-out of the view of the marketplace-I was appalled at the cruelty inflicted upon the dog being skinned alive, as well as the other caged dogs-who will be skinned-forced to watch.
The beauty of the marketplace does not make up for the atrocities visited upon the innocent lives of the dogs that are chosen by a customer to be skinned alive.

when it comes to animal cruelty this market comes on high rank! Dogs get skinned alive in front of visitors and other dogs which are cramped in tiny spaces. They slite snakes and let them suffer horrendous death, they cut frogs in half while they are alive. They are not humans! Never will go there again, whoever does will contribute these cruelties being done further!

While this market may seem sweet and lovely, deep down there is a darker side. Dogs being skinned alive for meat consumption by people. These poor dogs are brutally hung up and skinned alive while other dogs watch on, awaiting the same fate. I wouldn't go to this place if you paid me.
