We arrived at 4:15 and yes I'm aware that they closed at 5. We were rushed and shown 1 building. I wouldn't waste my time. The lady said there was a comedy that evening. And what we seen was eh. I'm all for historic places so it was a let down. Maybe coming earlier they'd actually show you things idk.

We visited on a Thursday about 1pm, rang the bell on the back of the house, and the lady let us in and gave us a tour of the Brown-Proctor House (built 1881), the Little Courthouse, and the Sagetown pioneer village. Admission was free. We were there about half an hour. If you are a history buff, this is a good stop. We learned from one small exhibit that songwriter Curly Putman was born in Jackson County and wrote many well loved country songs such as "The Green Green Grass of Home," "My Elusive Dreams," "Blood Red and Goin' Down," "D-I-V-O-R-C-E," and "He Stopped Loving Her Today." One room in the main house is a genealogical research library that those with relatives in the area might be interested in.

I should have learned by now to call ahead. Despite the information about hours of operation (9-4), we arrived to find the house locked for lunch hour. During our own lunch, I had checked the site and it indicated the house and grounds were opened. We walked the short distance from a restaurant in Scottsboro to find a sign indicating they would reopen at 1:00. Other plans meant that we could not stay, so we just wandered around the grounds. All of the old log cabins were also locked. This is probably not the case during the summer when there could be more visitors to the area.

A dozen of us in our church group took a tour of the center. It was an interesting presentation of the history of the area. There was material on families in the area and a lot of old court record books of mortgages, etc. There were a lot of record books in an old one-room courthouse. There were several log cabins that had been moved onto the property to show how people lived over a hundred years ago. Those who are interested in history would enjoy a visit.

Very nice place to visit for some local history. This venue also offers rooms to rent for various occasions like showers, parties and meetings.

This is a house that belonged to the Proctor family at a time when Scottsboro was a booming town. It has been turned into a museum with lots of ancestry records. The staff is so helpful and has records and land files as well as family records. The entire house is not open due to age but the grand downstairs has been turned into a history museum of the Proctors. Doing ancestry and having business matters in Huntsville I made the short drive up. I was amazed at the records they had access to.
