If you are looking for a place to rent a car for your trip to Costa Rica this is the one. We are from the states and this was our first time renting a car out of the country and they made it seamless. The booking was simple, they picked us up from the airport and they were so friendly and informative. Much better prices than booking with someone at the airport. 10/10!

Wild Rider were great. Met us as stated. Took us to the office and sorted out all the paperwork then gave us tips for our trip. We dropped the car off after 2 weeks. All very smooth and then a quick airport drop off. I would definitely recommend a 4x4 to see the real Costa Rica and get to places off the beaten track. The roads are not great and the driving is interesting but the country is amazing.
Would definitely go with them again - it is more personal and you get a bit extra than what you get with the big international companies

I was researching car rental companies and decided to go with Wild Rider for all the positive reviews and no hidden fees. I got to Costa Rica on the 28th of June 2024. I had been in contact with the company via email and made arrangements to be picked up at the airport. After arriving at the rental location, I decided to switch the original vehicle (Toyota Rush) since it looked a bit rundown and decided to go for the Rav4. Everything went well so far. It never dawned to me as to why the agent kept asking where I intended to go with the car, I would soon find out why.
The following day (June 29th), I decided to drive down to Limon with my family (2 1/2hr drive) and spent the day visiting friends and family. At approximately 7pm, after having a lengthy conversation with my uncle about possible parking locations to park the rental, he (my uncle) assured me that the neighborhood was very safe, and no one would mess with the car. I left the car outside of my uncle's house and decided to go to my aunt's house to spend the night with my family. The next morning, to my surprise, the car was no longer there.
Needless to say, I was extremely preoccupied and in panic mode. I said to myself "OMG they stole the car!!" My uncle was in utter shock!! He stated: "This never happens in this neighborhood" and decided to check the security cameras. To my amazing surprise (in the video), at approximately 8:56pm, not even 2 hours after leaving the car in front of my uncle's house Mr. Thomas decided this was an unsafe location to leave the car and decided to drive the car back to San Jose without any prior notice or communication. He practically left us without transportation!! It was extremely unprofessional and infuriating!!!
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that the rental location was 2 1/2 hrs away and he got to the car in such a short time. This led me to believe I was either being followed from the very start or being setup for them to steal their own car!!
Now in his defense, Mr. Thomas stated:" Half a year ago, a Suzuki Jimmy was stolen from us in the center of Limon. Here, too, the car was parked "safely" on the street with a camera. But a camera does not protect against theft by professional thieves. We look at the GPS data every evening and inform the customer if the car is parked very unsafely (I guess I was the exception). I also tried no notify you about your US number. Unfortunately, communication with this number was not possible. I then drove off myself at night in heavy rain and got the car off the street. I know it was incorrect, but I was panicking about losing a vehicle again through carelessness." His words exactly, apart from my little comment.
What I found strange is that he never really bothered looking at the contract we signed or even contacting me by email (which was our primary mode of contact) or even contacting the secondary driver's number (a local number) to discuss his concern, he just drove down in "heavy rain" because he thought his car was going to be stolen.
He did refund my money in full and apologized for the inconvenience via email but at the end of the day, this is not a good way of doing business. I had every right to go to the OIJ (the equivalent of the FBI in Costa Rica) and report this as vehicle theft. It practically ruined my vacation since I had planned to travel to Puerto Viejo, Manzanillo, Punta Uva, and several other locations with my family. My wife and kids were disheartened by the experience.

Dear Roan,
I would like to apologize again for the inconvenience that arose between us.
Costa Rica is small, but about 10 cars are stolen or broken into every night. These are not luxury cars but vehicles that are very common in Costa Rica. The stolen cars are dismantled the same night and sold as spare parts.
We have therefore equipped our cars with a very intelligent black box.
About one hour after nightfall, an alarm message was sent by SMS from this box. I will not give the details of the message here, but it was clear that someone had gained access to the interior of the car and tried to steal it by manipulating the steering wheel lock.
I'm not sitting in front of the computer at night checking where our cars are. But when I receive a level 3 alarm, I communicate with the device to find out what's going on.
As it was after 6:00 PM on a Saturday, I was not in the office and could not access your rental contract.
I then activated the electronic immobilizer and tried to reach you with text messages and direct phone calls. (Unfortunately, I only had your US number)
I tried to find our mechanic who works in this part of the country if one of our cars has a technical problem. But it was Saturday evening, and I couldn't reach him.
I then drove 100 miles to Limon in the pouring rain. To my surprise, the car was parked on a street corner.
I walked around the houses (about 15) in both directions and rang or called to locate you.
Nobody knew you (since you have lived in the USA for 20 years)
I then drove the car away and took it to a guarded parking lot. I slept in Limon to sort things out with you in the morning.
The following day, at around 10 a.m., you called, and I explained the situation: I did not sell you our car; I rented it to you. An explicit clause in the rental agreement states that the renter must park the vehicle safely at night. This can be a private garage with a gate, a parking lot at a hotel, or a public parking lot. However, parking the car on a street corner in the center of Limon with the highest crime rate (regardless of what kind) is not an appropriate place for a $35,000 car.
You have repeatedly explained that parking in front of a camera is safe parking—because your uncle says so. And you will not park the car in a safer place in the coming days.
(overnight parking in a safe place cost between 8 and 12 US$ !)
For this reason, I decided not to return the car because you were unwilling to accept the rental agreement terms. It was never my intention to ruin your vacations, but even as a local, you have to follow the terms of the rental agreement and not just say you know what you're doing. (Following your uncle's safety advice)
I refunded you for the entire rental period (even though you had already used the car for several days) I did not charge for the empty tank, and I offered you a credit of $300 on the condition that you accept the terms of the rental agreement.

I was running late to catch a flight and had an accident. With any average rental agency I would have absolutely missed the flight, but Wild Rider really went out of their way to get me on that flight. They changed the pickup location, talked to the other driver on my behalf, arranged the police paperwork in a matter of minutes so I could go catch my flight, and I didn't even have to pay a deductible for the insurance. Moreover, the contact person acted very compassionate both when picking up the car and on the phone, which you don't get with big rental agencies. They value each customer, and don't view you as yet another data point in their big number game. And all this excellent service including zero-deductible insurance was half the price of their competitors. I couldn't recommend them more.

A CAR ACCIDENT happened to me and this review explains how they handled it. First of all, their prices are unbeatable. Even though I booked an old model, I got a bigger and completely new car. We were able to explore Costa Rica off the beaten track using car's off-road capability.
I had a collision on Sunday evening. They were very responsive and helped me go through it (police, insurance agent, etc.). I received full support from them, even the owner Thomas called me.
Collision was not my fault but other driver couldn't cover a damage costs. I didn't have zero excess insurance so my excess was deducted, that's the law in Costa Rica.
But Thomas reported the case to court on my behalf. After half year I got my money back. They could easily use my money to fix a car and don't bother with a court case and I couldn't complain. They really care about customers. Very trustworthy.

Excellent local service for a 5 person 4x4 rental. Met us on time at the airport and came in earlier than normal hours to get us back to the airport for our morning return flight. The car was in great shape and handled us all for 2 weeks without incident. The price was better than the U.S. brands.

Wild rider provided us with a wonderful experience for our three-week road trip through Costa Rica.
From the very first communication when planning, it was clear to me that the team communicated clearly and professionally. All questions were addressed and fine lines were clarified where necessary. Also, when picking up the car they took ample time to go over everything, ensuring we were well-informed and prepared to start our trip.
The most important element for a Car Rental is also the biggest reason for us to recommend Wild Rider: the car itself. They do not offer brand new cars, which definitely makes you worry less when driving around in them (especially in terms of safety, as new cars stand out very quickly) and it also helps keep costs down. Our car showed its age, but was in perfect driving condition. The transparent pricing, including all Costa Rican fees and insurances, was also a refreshing change from the more international competitors who often charge hidden costs.
In conclusion, we would highly recommend Wild Rider to anyone planning a road trip adventure in Costa Rica. They are a reliable and affordable alternative to the more reputable rental agencies.

Great company to rent from. Everything up front and easy. Lots of nice dogs to play with at the compound! A great little car, perfect for touring around. Handy chairs, cool box and mobile phone as well. Highly recommended.

I can confirm that the company is reliable, the car (Toyota Rav4) was good, we had no any problems ( for 15 days). Great staff, took us from airport and then drop off back. And rent price was really competitive.

We rented a mini-SUV that seated four people from June 12-21 for $602. This price included the rental and insurance, as well as the fee for pick-up and drop-off at the airport and a Garmin rental. I think the actual rental with insurance was $500 (those optional additional fees added the extra $102). You should probably expect to pay more during the Christmas season though.

Hi, my daughter and her boyfriend are arriving on June 8th at 9 am at San Jose Airport and leaving Sunday at 10 am - how do I inquire about a rental for them. They don't need anything big as they only have backpacks. They are both 24 years old. Any info would be helpful.

I can't say enough good about them ..... they will be right at airport waiting for with a sign if you book right through their sight. They need a deposit and u pay in full when u get the rental. They are helpful with maps,GPS etc. we rented the jiminy it was perfect for 2 and did great on the wild CR roads. hope this helps

Email address is listed under contacts on their home page. Google Wild Rider Costa Rica and you shouldn't have any problems finding it. It is the email address listed previously.
